I sponsored a person going on a mission to Africa last year. I spent more money on that then I did Miss Kitty. Do I get to keep my cat? Besides that I don't drink or smoke - I should get some credit for that. I would say those should be the first things sacrificed for the children in Africa after all, alcohol is dangerous to your health and there are still a lot of DUI accidents, and smoking leads to health problems for both the person smoking and the people breathing the second hand smoke. My cat doesn't really cost much - $3.15 BOGO free cat food every other month (and sometimes I get a coupon for the that which brings two bags down to $1.15), one container of litter each month ($8.00 if not on sale and/or coupons), and the once a year vet visit (about $100). My friend watches my kitty when I am on vacation and if she isn't available, then I call the person who cleans my house to check on her. First you want me to send money to someone else's brats and now you are telling me I shouldn't drink because of them??? Are you trying to hurt me?

So I know I started this thread just to be obnoxious, but seriously, have you ever thought about how messed up we are? Look at this quote, and I'm not trying to pick on anybody since I think we all agree with it on some level: And I am not giving up my cat for someone elses kids Doesn't that seem kind of wrong? Aren't we all kind of assholes? What if we fall on hard times and it's our kid that needs the help? How would we feel about somebody saying, "Well I'm not giving up Fifi just so your kid can live"? It's a pretty messed up attitude.

Thanks MM I am just playing along - I wouldn't want anyone to give up anything. There are plenty of people helping the poor in Africa. Unfortunately they have not figured out exactly how to help them in a way that will stop the cycle. Kind of like our welfare system.........

I give money to charities. On the flip side since I'm the one earning that money I (call it selfish if you want) am going to spend some of that money on things that make me happy. I could live like a pauper, give all my excess money to charity and we'd still have starving kids.

To put it politely I couldn't give a rats ass about some starving kid in some foreign country.
For the record, you do know there are starving kids in this country too right?
If kids are starving here in the U.S. it's their parents fault. We give tons of money to people who don't work. We have food programs, etc. I'm not interested in knocking on every door & asking if their kids are hungry. If they are then the parents need to do something, not me.

I agree Tex My niece and her mother are on welfare and constantly complaining because they have no money, but they eat better then I do thanks to food stamps. Last time I talked to my niece she was eating crab legs and steak. I work and don't eat that well Both my niece and her mom are healthy, young, and able to work but chose not to.

Well, is it OK if I do both? I house two completely useless cats (or should I say, they tolerate me and let me live there) and I also support my local food bank and homeless shelter needs with donations, as well as volunteer for a local AIDS organization and organize an annual bake sale to benefit a no-kill animal shelter. I mean, I don't want to be totally selfish and rotten and self-centered. <<Nancy gives the promised exalt to CL>> True for us as well. We also have two cats who are generous enough to share their abode with us. And I'm a faithful contributor to our local food bank, along with other charities (e.g. some Jewish charities, St. Jude's, and an organization that helps Afghan women). So, I guess I'm just somewhat selfish? Karma to Nancy...

And if we didn't have our pets, where would they be? Out in the wild, without proper care spreading rabbies and other diseases. I think we are actually saving the world by having pets

Animals aren't living creatures who deserve compassion....? I have a lot I would like to say but I'll keep it to myself so I don't get lynched...

I find it way more selfish that people have children that can't afford to care for or the ones that continue to have more kids for the financial help they get than people who have their pets and love and can afford take care of them. Pets bring a lot of happiness into peoples lives and that's more than I can say for most people. I'm selfish. I can live with that.

Most of my estate is willed to the SPCA. I just don't trust those charities that claim to be helping the poor orphans. Besides, the pets I have adopted have been a joy!

No dachshund that I have ever had has ever borrowed my car & brought it back leaking oil. I wish that I could say the same about my kids. Dachshunds are better than kids & cost less too.

Where does one get a standoffish cat? Neither of mine are. One goes outside and after an hour will come back in looking for me (starts yowling if she can't). As soon as she sees me, she'll go back outside or cuddle on my lap. My cats keep tabs on me! ;D Also, my kitties are better trained than most kids.
