azmom - way to go DH!! enjoy your trip!
mitten - that is so frustrating. I hope they come around and continue to provide transportation.
Well, we continue to find out issues from the hurricane. I stepped out of the shower to see water leaking from the ceiling at the bottom of our stairs. Funny thing is, all our plumbing is in the center of the house - there are no pipes up there. But then I remember our Central AC unit is upstairs in what used to be the master closet. So I figure the gutters (out which the AC empties) were clogged. Nope. So now we figure something happened with the hose in the hurricane, maybe it came undone. So we need a ladder so we can get up there and check it out. In the meantime, AC off. Which honestly makes me happy, since I didn't think we needed it. But I'm kind of glad we found this now and not during some 95 degree indian summer or whatnot. At least it's bearable right now.
So blue is stressed beyond belief, especially since he's going on a business trip next week and won't be here when they come to do the tree stump. And now leaky ceiling. We'll have to do some repairs there for sure.
Still trying to pay for all of this with cash. So far, so good, but the EF is taking major hits. Thank God for freelance work... I just hope it continues to come in!
Taking blue to a movie tonight. He needs to get out of the house (which he's now saying he wants to sell haha) and forget all of this for a few hours. I even let him pick, which means Planet of the Apes. Anyone see it? I'm a little worried I'll have nightmares or something.
Did I mention how glad I am my friends didn't come this weekend? We'd be no fun at all. But my parents are on Long Island checking out real estate (yay!), and are swinging by on their way home Sunday, so my stepdad can look at the AC situation at least. That makes me feel better.
Okay, done rambling. Back to cleaning.

Now about myself: I am a 38 soon to be 39 YO woman with a DF (dear fiance my issues with committment NOT his) DSS (14 YO), DS#1 8 YO, DS#2 5 YO with autism and is nonverbal and 3 YO DD. The one everyone remembers me posting as I was in labor LOL.
I found these boards in Aug/Sept 2007 pretty close to when they began. I had been forced to give up my job as DS#2 just could not leave me. My grocery budget was a little out of control. I was just finding out I was pregnant with DD who was a surprise. We had/have no debt other then a mortgage for our home and one for a rental. I really needed to touch base with other adults seen as I was pretty isolated at home.
So between this thread and the grocery thread I was able to get that part under control and find my weaknesses (I now have a strict plan for SAM's Club) and I was able to wean myself off the going to Caribou or Starbucks thing I had. I remember hearing the ladies over my shoulder "you really don't need that for cost OR calories"
In early 2008 the gal running this thread needed a break so I stepped up. I did later have to scale back as the demands of my children grew. I however do still value all my friends here.
Oh and sbcali you started here 5/28/2008
reenee: The Blog is one only I can post to as it is connected to my personal blogs.

azmom - congrats to DH - hope the vacation goes smoothly!
mk - not very helpful of them at all - when will they decide on the transportation issue?
dakota - I was reading a blog and they mentioned their downfall was eating out and they were going to use a weight watchers like system to limit them. They were concerned from the financial perspective so they rate restaurants by price point - cheaper restaurants = fewer points and they give themselves I think 50 points per month. They started last month and it worked so they are trying it again. So we're trying it here - except points are based more on nutritional value (money spent eating out is a budget leak - but not the primary issue for us). We get 30 points - fast food places = 7 points per meal (so we could go 1x per week basically), healthier quick dining/sit down (Panera for example) = 5 points, our favorite restaurants where we get balanced healthier meals = 3 points. We'll see how it works!

UPDATE: 2/30 NSD/CSD, 0/10 MOANs
7/30 Eating out points used
I may post more updates just to keep better track!
I'm taking a quick trip to Austin - anybody have any recommendations for music venues/restaurants/cool shops? I know they have tons down there and if someone has the inside scoop - I'd love to get it!

mk- We are going to the Grand Superior Lodge at Two Harbors. I've seen Superior from the Michigan. My brother went to Michigan Tech, but never from Minnesota. Other than the possibility of it being cold (or at least what we consider cold since it has been in the 90s and 100s this week, again), we pretty excited. I'm excited that this trip is on DH and if it isn't planned then it isn't my fault. We are sharing a cabin with his brothers and sister. It has 2 bedrooms and we get one and his sister and her daughter (she's 14) get the other. My BILs and oldest niece (19, almost 20) will fight each other for pull out couch. I did cave and drink a soda today. My headache (sinuses, not caffine related) was raging. Hopefully the weekend home will give me time to relax. The boss let us leave at 3:30 today. Woohoo. I told DH that the boss fired us all until Tuesday. I like to pay cash for eating out on any trips we take, but we've been really bad in the past about having cash until my parents left us money last March for our trip to Alabama. After our last trip to Iowa, our cash stash was depleted. So, on payday instead of $80 for 2 weeks (DH and I each get $40), I am pulling out $100 and putting $20 in the cash stash. It is also suppose to be our date money. But we only seem to get to go on a date when my parents come down to visit. I'm hoping that at this wedding my in-laws will step up and watch DS a bit so we can at least dance together. We've spent 11 days on the road in the last year to go to 2 weddings and have danced exactly once and that was holding DS between us because had no one to watch him for the dance. (Which was cute, but not exactly romantic). Given that we are the only married couple between DH's siblings, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

UPDATE: 2NS/25; 2NEO/29; 1MOAN I have primed, painted, and caulked today and will go back tomorrow to do more of the same. That's right- we are FINALLY painting!!!! I am also prepping for an inspection at my place. But I have 3 weeks until my inspection. If all of our help shows up tomorrow- we may actually get all or close to all of the back rooms- with the exception of the bathroom- done tomorrow. Once the painting is done, I can restock the shelves in the pantry and start moving things where they go in the laundry and mud rooms, the new carpet can be installed, the furniture and sewing stuff can go back, etc. Sewing- DGM is giving me one of her machines and sergers. The serger has never been out of the box. So, there are 2 conditions that come with the serger- one is that I use it of course- the other is that I have to let her use it once before I take it home. (I can do that- it's the only way I'll learn how to use the fool thing anyway!) My grandmother said she has already picked which machine I am getting. Books- Right now I am reading "Sleeping with the Angels" about the Our Lady of Angels Catholic school fire on December 1, 1958. Very sad story. Some of you may be old enough to remember this fire. My mother was only 4 when the fire occured. It killed 92 students and 3 nuns in Chicago. Thought for the weekend- I have no profound thoughts for anyone after reading their posts other than- I am thinking about all of you. Honestly, I am exhausted after painting and caulking and priming and I think my brain melted (or I inhaled). All of our ladies in the gulf- Please watch the storm carefully! All of our ladies on the East Coast- Hope hurricane clean up is going well and you all have power, water, etc. Ladies on the west coast- I heard something about an eartquake today??? Hope you all are alright. QOTW/COTW- I am looking to see how much junk mail I can opt out of. There is supposed to be a thing where you can get the post office to stop sending it to you. I know there is an optout for CC offers ;D. I have also found out that I can get my only magazine subscription online- and they were offering a discount if you ordered online (an incentive to go green). I will probably switch that to online too. I have personally challenged myself for both financial and dietary reasons to try switching my SB allowance to coffee or tea. It will be less calories and money. I have gotten better about going in there if I am not going to the store. I will check in this weekend, but probably won't do much catching up until Monday (no one is working at DGMs Monday- it has been so said by DGM who is still has a slight choke hold on things from the nursing home ) Want to get the painting and stuff done while I have help this weekend.

Update: 2 NS/CS days, 1 NEO, 1 MOANmitten: Thanks! Glad someone knows Spruby: that sounds like a great system. azmom: congrats to DH and have a great vacation. Well, so far so good. Yesterday I only spent a few dollars out of my allowance to finish a project for DD1. We're starting a reward system for her to hopefully get some better behavior before I lose my mind and I needed a few things to finish it up. Today, we went to Costco and only bought groceries and DD1's halloween costume. I'm excited though about that since we went under budget and DH picked it out. He wanted to get her a totally non-traditional, non-girly costume so he picked out a SWAT team uniform. His theory is that she'll have an opinion next year and beyond so he has to get his pick in now. Whatever, I just said we have to hide the baton before she really tries to kill me with it . I'm beyond exhausted and stressed so I'm hoping this weekend will be a little better. I had the house totally immaculate before DD1 and DH's return from Yosemite last night at 10 pm and in less than 24 hours they have already trashed it . Sometimes I really wonder why I even bother...

muttley - training went well. it was basically just to show me the features of the Word add-on program they use. The woman seemed very nice and helpful, and I'm hoping to get a project soon! She seemed really happy to have me on the roster, so it seems like there's a need, which is good news!
as for the house, I'm cleaning the inside (desperately needed it) and blue is finishing up with cutting up the last branches from the tree. It's going to take some major raking to get up all the tiny branches and woodchips out of the grass... and the bobcat or whatever they use to pull up the stump is going to wreck the lawn. Thinking this fall is as good a time as any to put in in-ground sprinklers and run electrical to the pool (blue's cousin can do it for us, woohoo pool next year!). It's just a matter of finding a free weekend to do it all. His uncle put in his own in-ground sprinklers so we're hoping he can help us for a case of beer haha. we'll see... I just figure why repair the lawn only to rip it up again next year. Might as well go for it. We'll see how the funds look after hurricane cleanup is done...
and i gotta say, love blue with the chainsaw. he's a computer geek so it's kinda sexy to see him be all outdoorsy man manly lol. don't tell him I said that, he'll kill me...
sbcali - I hope DD catches on soon!
Halloween- I need costume ideas for me and blue... we're having a Halloween party and in an effort to get our friends to actually dress up, I'm having a costume contest. Need a good prize idea too, $25 or less. Maybe 2nd and 3rd place too. Also, if anyone knows of any fun Halloween-theme desserts/appetizers I could make I'm collecting ideas!! I'm sad I missed Halloween last year (came home from honeymoon day before, so I'm not really complaining) so I'm kind of going a little nuts for this party (within frugal constraints, of course. people are bringing booze and snacks, too).
Okay, time to tackle the upstairs!

Update: 2/15 NSD, 1/10CSD
I am including today as a no spend since I know I will not be leaving the house at all today.
We have had almost 11 inches of rain so far in my area and they expect at least another 36 hours of tropical storm activity from Lee. The ground has been so dry lately that most of the rain has been soaked up so far. Some street flooding in the usual low areas is happening. Wind hasn't been really bad so far. I am trying to get the last of the laundry done while I still have power. Hopefully I will not lose it.
Time to switch loads so I will sign off now.

3cats – I remember how hard it was to stay organized when I first started here. I was living in the utility room and caring for the princesses. It's not easy, even if the one room has a reasonable amount of space. Start – yay for short notice guests! Now about this begging to work for them thing, I think the important question to ask yourself is, are you allowed to go to work in your yoga pants? Spruby – As the official filing monkey at the store, I can say with all honesty that if you have a system set up and use it, filing doesn't have to be a chore. It can be as simple as open drawer, put paper in front of folder, take last paper out of folder, shred, close drawer. Less than 30 seconds. I even have each of the files marked with retention periods (i.e. keep 12 months rolling, keep 1 fiscal year, etc.) so that if someone else wants to monkey with my files, they at least know what they're supposed to keep. Dakota – I'm such a history nerd, I'd be all over that guided tour. Plus I love old houses. Smokey – ewwww. What is it with dead opossums this week? One of my coworkers has one under her porch and it took her landlord several days to get there to remove it. Azmom – don't be embarrassed. This has turned out to be an area that most of us could use some improvement in. Now getting football and baseball mixed up, that's embarrassing. Congrats to your hubby! And WTG on planning ahead! redwagon – ick on spending $200 to restock the fridge. And holy carp, $575 to remove a stump?! I live in the land of loggers, where you smile, bat your eyelashes, cook up a nice dinner, and provide plenty of beer and get the job done for free. ses – hope you're having fun shopping for books! Financialpeace – good for you for being on top of the mail situation. I still haven't pulled mine out from between the blender and the vitamins. That's tomorrow's project. MK – why is the reimbursement so low? I think the IRS rate for business mileage write offs is over .50 cents a mile. Muttleyn – I hope you get to dance! Have you tried subtly guilt tripping one of the nieces? What about a grandma-type? Someone should be able to manage for about 5 minutes. Mizbear – Sounds like the reno is moving along nicely. Once you get started on the serger you'll wonder how you ever got by without it.

Sorry I was MIA yesterday ladies. Had some major drama crop up. More on that in a moment. First, I have photos of the henna tattoo to share. So when it's first applied, there's a thick paste that you have to leave on your skin for at least 4 hours. The lady who did mine prettied it up with some glitter. I left mine on for about 24 hours because I figured since I have such a hard time tanning my legs, I might have a hard time getting the henna to take. So this is what it looked like when I scraped the paste and glitter off: And today it's a darker burnt orange color. Very cool. A word of caution to anyone who's thinking about getting a henna tattoo, please make sure to go to a reputable artist. Ours was employed by a well known tattoo parlor, and provided contact information as well as care instructions. There are some products out there billed as henna tattoos that can be very dangerous. Henna will always be in the orange/tan/brown/kahki/greenish color range, it should NEVER be black. The cool thing about this is that even with my crazy sensitive skin, I was able to get it without any problems. Now on to the drama. So all week I've been out of the apartment during the daytime, either at work or just out and about. Sometimes I left my car at the apartment since I'm so close to everything, and enjoyed the good weather by walking. I got home Tuesday night and a neighbor approached me saying that the apartment complex manager had spend almost 10 minutes banging on my door, ringing the door bell, and shouting that I was being evicted and had to get out while I was gone in the middle of the day. The only potential problem I can think of is that I paid part of August's rent with a money order that I dropped in the drop box one evening, and it's possible that something happened to it. It's not the most secure drop box in the world, but I hadn't heard of any problems. Wednesday I didn't hear anything, I was gone with Mom and Sis all day. The only phone calls I got were from out of state numbers that I didn't recognize, so I didn't answer. Thursday my best friend, my sister, and my mom all call, panicked because they got calls from the apartment manager saying that I hadn't payed August rent at all, I was being evicted, I'm not answering the door when they know I'm home, and on and on. I had a full day of appointments and freelance work, so I wasn't able to go into the office, and they weren't answering the phone. Yesterday, I got to work to find out that they had called there and asked for me. The employee who answered the phone let them know that I wasn't in, so the apartment manager told her all the same things they had been telling my family and friend. Nevermind that the person who answered the phone isn't even a manager, and even if they had been a manager they can't discuss my personal situation. Then my best friend stops by and tells me that they called her AGAIN stating that they were going to change the locks on my apartment today if I didn't pay both August and September rent. Now, coming up with 2 months rent on less than a days' notice isn't something that I can do on a regular basis. Luckily, it happened to be my payday (and that was already earmarked for September rent anyway) and I had just (finally) received some money from my HSA account. My BFF slipped the rest of what I needed into my pocket without even discussing it with me, so on my lunch break I spent 25 minutes at the bank getting a certified check to take to the office. Except when I got there, the office is empty and no one is answering the phones. So I grabbed an envelope and stuffed my payment as far down in that drop box as I could get it, then left a message on their emergency line. There are so many things wrong with this whole situation I hardly know where to start. The apartment manager should never have told anyone anything about my situation. The extent of the message should have been something along the lines of "I need to speak with reeneejune urgently regarding her apartment". Shouting at an empty apartment on the assumption that I'm home (an assumption based on my car's presence, I think) was not only unprofessional, but a breach of privacy as well. And after looking up the landlord/tenet laws, locking me out of the apartment without taking me to court would have been illegal. Right now I'm still super ticked off, I know I need to do something about how they handled this, but I need to calm down before I make any decisions.

reenee - Given that the oldest nieces is in a serious relationship and has been for several years, I think letting her take care of Ben for a few minutes will give her a much needed reminder to use birth control. LOL. It always worked for me. Someone will watch him...I think. I like the henna tat. Sorry about the crappy apartment manager. That stinks. I hope you get something worked out.
money - Hugs. I hope you keep power and don't get flooded. Feel free to send some of that rain up here.
We had a meet up this morning to pick up some clothes I bought for Ben off of Craigslist. 5 pairs of like new pants and 5 pairs of like new long sleeve shirts for $18. He's going to need the long pants this next week I think. Highs only around 70. Hard to believe since it is like 95 right now. As soon as DS is up from his nap, we are headed to MIL's B-day. We spent too much at Walmart this morning. We spent about $100 on groceries and then $30 on misc. We usually grocery shop at Walmart in R, but we were in S to meet up with that gal. So, we just stopped there. A gallon of whole milk is $1 cheaper in S than in R! I don't get it.

UPDATE: 3NS/25; 2MOAN; 3NEO/29I was actually going to do a flyby- but this caught my eye and I thought it needed an immediate thought. reenee- Do you have your receipt for your money order? If so, you need to call the company or bank on the receipt and find out where it was cashed and when. Get a copy of the landlord/tenant laws in your area. Keep those in hand and talk to the landlord. Do not hand over the original receipt of the MO for August rent but show it to them- if they want it- they have to accept a copy. Let them know when you dropped it to the slot and when you found out where and when it was cashed. It may be worth it to start using certified checks with them. Our rental office's drop slot is practically impenetrable from the outside so this deeply concerns me- especially the breaking the law part- my rental people would never... I hope you get it straightened out. I will pop in again tomorrow- we are taking off from painting tomorrow and hopefully finishing up Monday. My mother is going to cook for us on the grill while we paint.

I'll be back later with a full update but just a quick hi for now. Got back from my the bday party for my cousin's 1 yo daughter and got some amazing family pics. It really bothers me that both my cousins have kids that are now 1 yo and today was the first time they met great grandpa (my mom's dad) because in a WHOLE YEAR the parents were too lazy to make a trip to see him. We all live in the same 20 mile radius btw.
I'll try to post a pic but if you're on my facebook you'll see lots of em

Just wanted to let you ladies know that all in well in my area. Had some additional rain but my immediate area did not see any accumulated water. I also had power all day. Hope that the worse is over but have to see how the storm loops -- I suspect that tomorrow may be another rainy day.

Quick thanks to who ever it was that said to used your Nety pot in the shower. I have a sinus rinse very similar, used it in the shower today soooo much better. I think the ragweed is starting to bother me. Less now that I used my sinus rinse. I am cutting branches off a tree today. They are good size branches but a power saw isn't necessary. At least that is my hope.

Update: 3/15 NSD, 1/10CSD
Today was spent at home again. Rained today but it was almost all drizzle. I think we have several more hours of it prior to its movement eastward.
Stayed home and used today to reorganize closet and tackle the COTE. All wayward papers have either been filed, shredded of trashed.
Will check back later.

UPDATE - 3 CSD/NSD, 2EO
I feel like I've been spending like a drunken sailor so far this month, even though we're totally stocked up on everything and I shouldn't have to spend more than $30-40 week for groceries until mid-October. I think some of it is residual stress from last month... paid DH's tuition (~$1700), the quarterly student loan (~$500), and put $850 in the propane tank on top of our normal monthly expenses. Also bought a food processor and rice cooker yesterday (we've been using the hell out of both though!)
So far I've spent around $140 on food/groceries and $105 on misc. (food processor/rice cooker, roller derby dues, and a few random things at the thrift store). I think I am nervous about cash flow because both vehicles have been starting to make new and interesting noises... hoping both are cheap fixes but I suspect at least one is an engine/transmission issue.

moneysquirrel - I saw some pics of the flooding in the newspaper this morning, I'm glad that you're on dry-ish ground for now.
mizbear - I've started the process of tracking down if the money order was cashed and if so trying to find out who cashed it or where it was cashed. I'm getting the feeling though that this is less about what I may or may not have done wrong and more about them trying to force/intimidate/annoy me out. I went through my call records for the last month after digging up every phone number associated with the apartment complex I could find. They've called me all of twice in the last month, both of which were AFTER they began calling my references/emergency contact/workplace. And yesterday the apartment manager shows up at my workplace, asks for me, and then leaves before they can even offer to get me since I was busy doing something at the time she arrived.
I think the worst part right now is knowing that I won't be able to scrape up enough money to move until at least October 1st, and that's assuming I can find a place that will let me split my deposit into a couple of payments. (I'm assuming at this point, that even if I leave this apartment in immaculate condition, it's unlikely I'll get my deposit back without a lengthy battle.) I have one lead, another regular customer who manages another apartment complex. It's just an awkward time for me right now, financially, because I'm so close to the end of the student loan payments.

renee - assuming you can get this worked out with the landlord - can you stick it out another month or two and get past the debt payoff point? Do you have a lease? What would it cost to get out of it? You should consider writing a letter to the management office and corporate as well expressing your displeasure with how they are treating you. Something fishy is going on I think.

reenee- I would camp out at the office first thing monday/tues and get this settled. Combine all of your arguments into a letter and copy it to the manager, builder's owner and some governing body for your state if you can find one.
a) they have to legally notify you of missed payment. Shouting at your apartment door, calling your emergency contact and stalking you at work do NOT count. There should have been a certified letter in your mail box and messages in your voicemail or on the door to your apartment, at minimum.
b) a locked office door during posted management hours has impeded your ability to resolve the situation and provide copies of the money order. The cannot fail to ask you to contact them and then make it impossible for you to contact them.
* list out here all the ways and days and times you've tried to contact them *
c) They have to prove contractually their demand for 2 months rent and eviction notification. It should be included in your rental documents and probably there's a note about a late payment fee but not higher payment or double payment demands. Also the state must have some system for the eviction process - what notifications must be made before they lock you out of your home.
d) provide a solution. they need to provide receipts for payments left in the lockbox to your mailing address within so many days. Late payment notifications must be made if any resident is more than 5 days late paying rent so when payment HAS been made you can make amends and reissue the payment quickly.
e) issue a "light" thread. And by that I mean the law. Tell them that their behavior has been ineffective, illegal, on the verge of harassment and stalking and as a result if it continues will be reported as such to the state governing board. Detail your months as a model tenant paying on time and not causing issues for the landlord. But let them know you cannot correct a problem you didn't know existed and as much as you like the apartment you will NOT let them harass you.

spruby - thankfully I do NOT have a lease, it's a month to month rental agreement. My hope at this point is that I can stick it out until the end of October, preferably until the end of November so that I have enough money in hand to move on without causing a hardship on my finances.
start - All of that is great, assuming that the apartment manager is willing to act rationally. One of my coworkers and I have been talking today, and apparently this particular woman is known to the employees at the store as being a complete b*tch who once left her young children in the car unsupervised for over an hour while she shopped. All evidence points towards irrational behavior. I think a strategic retreat as soon as financially feasible is in order.

UPDATE 4/25 NS/CS; 4/29 NEO; 2 MOAN
reenee- From what you are saying, I would say you are taking a really good course of action- track down the MO, find out what the prob is and plan a retreat. You don't need some nut playing with your money and your housing. I know here they send you a notice when you are 5 days late, you have until 10 days to pay with no late fee. Then you get a court notice. They must have the sherriff's office post a notice at your door. You have to be a nuisance tenant, be late 3 times in a 12 month period, or something like 60 or 90 days behind before you can be served eviction papers (60 I believe- that's how long my last neighbors lasted- I think). They have to post the notice and file it with the courts/ law enforcement. They can't just throw you out.
If you lived closer, I'd tell you to just come move in here- it's small, but my landlord has policies and couth.
Back to painting tomorrow. And kids. I am soooo going to need coffee tomorrow.

mizbear - Oregon law is very similar to what you posted. At 10 days late they can post a 72 hr notice. If unpaid at that time, they can file with the court. Then the summons is either posted on your door or delivered personally for a hearing 7 days later. The court names a move out date if the landlord wins the case. If the tenant is still there at that point, the landlord has the Sheriff deliver a 4 day notice to vacate, and after day 4 the Sheriff can forcibly remove you. What sort of worries me right now is that when I do move, these nut jobs are the only rental references I have since 2008.
