September Goals
28 CS 27 NEO
cleanslate - Welcome! Feel free to ask any questions that come up or for clarification if you don't understand an acronym as we tend to fall into verbal shorthand after a while.
QOTW: My paperwork is actually in not too bad a shape - with the exception of my filing. When I come into the house through the back door I walk directly into my office. I open the mail (which I admit I only collect from my mail box 2-3 times a week) and do my first sort: Recycle - File - To Be Paid (these get put into an In Box next to my desk/work area. Magazines are flipped through, inserts removed, and placed in a basket to be taken upstairs to the living room or bed room
I then enter the bill's total balance along with my estimated payment for that month onto my spreadsheet as a reminder. Once the payment is made I note the check, bank site or web site tracking number on the bill and into the mountain it goes to be filed. I also update the spreadsheet with the actual date and amount paid.
I am also fairly disciplined about receipts for cash purchases as well as my debit card - which I use a LOT. Once I put the receipt information into that month's spreadsheet they go into a special In Box (next to the pending bills). I shred them once the bank statements have arrived and been balanced.
where my system sort of de-rails itself is in the disposition of paper. It DOES get filed .... eventually. I am more than a bit ... "retentive".... when it comes to paper trails. I keep utility bills for one year. Bank and investment statements for two years and pay stubs until I get my W-2s. Then all old paper is shredded. I need to go through the filing basket, sort things out, file and purge old paper. As the girls may be gone most of Saturday with another family to the beach - that would be a good quiet time to get this taken care of.
COTW: While I think I have the mail pretty well under control I am going to challenge myself on another paper matter.
My bank only keeps two months of checking or savings statements online before they purge them. As with many banks, mine no longer returns cashed checks with the statements - though I do get scans of them. I want to scan all my bank and investment statements and begin keeping them in separate computer files so if/when I do need copies they will be available.

Welcome to September everybody!
QOTW: 99% of my mail is junk. 95% of the time, I place it in the recycle bin in the garage before I go into the house.
COTW: Funny this should be the challenge. Mail in and of itself is not my problem; however, I do seem to have a pile of papers on the floor in my room and on the steps. What?! Clearly, the pile on the steps should probably just be burned/recycled. My problem though is keeping track of receipts. ARGGGH. The grocery ones I use to track the prices of items. I had already listed organizing the piles of paper in my house on my "to do" list this weekend.

Welcome Cleanslate!Reenee-The Other Boleyn Girl. I don't know why but I find Tudor England absolutely fascinating. Especially how a woman basically was the reason that the Church of England was created. All because she wouldn't give it up until King Henry VIII married her. This book is about Mary Boleyn who was King Henry's mistress for 5 years prior to his marriage to Anne. The Boleyn family (at least as portrayed in most books about that time) were calculating social climbers. I'm also very interested in Eleanor of Aquitaine (wife of Henry II) she was an interesting woman as well. The next book on deck is about her. Honey- From the other thread, if I could figure out how to do that I'd be rich! Heck I'd hire some fitness buff to lose the weight for me. I'm actually not "dieting" I'm really just controlling portions and keeping my calories at a level to so that I lose about a pound a week. For lunch today I had homemade mac & cheese, just a small portions with lots of veggies. I need to start exercising so it keeps coming off. Shelia-This book is a break from the Harry Potter, I mistakenly figured I'd be able to put it down and go to sleep at a reasonable hour. I have all 7 books and am ready to start book 4 (which I can never remember the name of). Startsmart- Sounds like September will be busy even without the client you got rid of. Hope that it all pans out with the new leads! Muttley- That is so cute about DS picking up and being ready for bed. Mini-D will do that too, he'll ask us if it is time for bath yet, so we know he is ready for bed. Though since he is such a morning person we hate to put him in bed before 8 because then he is awake before 6am. DH has hauled all the boxes of mini-D clothes out of storage so they are at least all in the house. So since I have 5 days off I should be able to get them sorted, maybe even get mini-D to help. You can lose the weight. I can't wait until I'm down to 165, that is my prepregnancy weight. SBcali- I know the danger that lurks in Target and boy clothes aren't even that cute! Wanted to share this recipe. I though AZmom might like it for her group. It would be a good brunch item and not that expensive or time consuming and they look really cute. I had the ham and eggs in the fridge and needed to use them up so this was my dinner last night. (DH & mini-D wanted nothing to do with them. I'll see how they reheat tomorrow.) I also think they would be good with some black bean salsa on top. Ham & Egg cups 6 slices of deli ham 6 eggs 1/2 cup cheese Chives Salt & pepper Preheat oven to 350. Spray 6 cups of a muffin tin with cooking spray. Arrange ham slices so they line the muffin cup completely, edges will stick up above the cup. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and break an egg into each cup, gently breaking yolk Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Return to oven for 10 minutes. Check eggs, if they are done to your liking remove and sprinkle with cheese and chives. If not, continue cooking, checking every minute or so. Serve immediately. Makes 6 servings.

Honey – Sounds like a good alternate challenge since it looks like you (predictably ) have a good system in place. Dakota – I've read that one. But I found that her other books were a little hit and miss for me. One I actually stopped reading in the middle and never picked back up again. *gasp* I never do that. And the Ham and Egg cups sound yummy. Let me know if they reheat well, I might make some of those up if they keep well. I've also seen something similar done with hashbrowns used as a base... probably a Sandra Lee recipe.

Sheila - We are driving. I think I have DH convinced that we need to leave Thursday night and get somewhere between KC and Des Moines. Map quest has the trip is 12 driving hrs. UGH! We've done that a couple times or close to it in the last year (actually for the other 2 weddings we have gone to). Sunday, I think the plan is to hit the town in NW Wisconsin where DH grew up on the way home and then get down around the twin cities. I'm pretty sure we will have my MIL with us and we might be caravanning with my BILs and oldest niece (last I heard she is flying here from Florida to road trip with her dad). Renee - I actually gained 50 when I was pregnant. It all came off easily and then some. I was 150 (on a good day) pre pregnancy. I've never tried to lose weight or I'd think about it and then be like oh I'm happy at 150 and not worry about. 140 is probably my "smokin hot weight". ;D Or at least it was 7 years ago. Sigh. Dakota - Thanks for the encouragement...and going through mini-D's old clothes. I do appreciate it. And yes, I have totally done what you did reading. It sucks. My goal is always to go be bed by 10 and have the light off at 10:30. Apparently, I have been trending late enough that last night when I laid down at 10, I was wide awake. UGH!. So frustrating. So, I watched some TV and then read and didn't fall asleep until 11:30. Cleanslate - Welcome!

reenee: You mean the dining room table ISN'T for last weeks laundry? OPPS
cleanslate: Welcome. We are looking forward to our relaunch!
QOTW: I get most bills online but with DS#2 and his special needs I get a TON of paperwork. I go through everything every day and get rid of the junk. I then have one pile for things that need attention on my filing cabinet. I then try to file what needs to be filed once a week or once every other week.

Muttleyn – I'm glad the pregnancy weight came off easily the first time. I really have no room to talk when it comes to weight loss. I have a person to lose. And that person weighs a little more than your “smokin' hot” weight. Ick. I'm going to go back to not thinking about that now.
MK – No, the laundry basket is for last week's laundry. The closet is for hiding the laundry basket in. The dresser is for... oh yeah, the dresser is the surface onto which you empty your pockets at the end of the day!

reenee; I only have one room so I can't take things to the room it belongs to. Sorry. I just have to pick a corner or flat surface and start there. It was the cable Internet that was messed up, not my computer. I still need a new computer but I don't have to hurry up and decide what to do with this one. DS wants me to give it to DGD. He said it would make her day. Well, I have to get one for me before anyone gets this one. sheila; DS says that when I turn my laptop on, all the other ones slow down by 2/3 speed. I don't need a very fancy one, just one that I can use and not spend a lot of time getting where I want to go on the web. Right now it takes about 7-10 minutes to get this thing up and running to this speed. I have the patience to wait but no one else has. That is okay with me. There was something else I wanted to say but I can't remember what. When I think of it I will be back.

So I won't update until tomorrow but pretty sure this will be a NSD ;D Someone bought me coffee this morning so I used my $3 cash from last month's allowance to get myself and grandpa a cookie and visited him after lunch. Then went to see sbcalimom and DD2 and decided to postpone my shopping a few days. Why? Because my Dad is coming up tonight. Yeah, he told me a whole 9 hours before arriving on a day when I'm largely out of the house and busy with work. so I really need to get off the computer and clean since Dad is really particular. No dirty dishes, no half done projects, no newspaper strewn about the hallway But I'll answer the QOTW: Question of the Week: Do you know where your mail is? Do you have a system for organizing it?
My mail comes inside and goes into the paper pile. Most of it is junk that gets recycled but I do pull out the bills and put them in a "to be paid file" the next step after paying is putting them in the "scan and file folder" - ideally all of these will be on autopay but I don't like my bank's system. Challenge of the Week: Designate a spot for mail and figure out a way to sort it that works for you. I like my sorting system I just have to do it more regularly. I also collect all my receipts but need to file them away monthly. Another project.

Goal: 30 NSD/CSD, 10 MOANsInstead of NEOs - we are trying a restaurant point system - we have 30 points to use. We are at 7/30. Yes McD lured us in since we didn't have a post-Costco dinner plan. Must plan dinner!!! Question of the Week: Do you know where your mail is? Do you have a system for organizing it?: I'm pretty good at sorting mail, throwing away junk mail, putting magazines on the pile. We get very few paper bills/statements - but have tons of receipts from the debit card. Bills to be paid go by the laptop and get scheduled the next time I use it. Then the system falls apart. There is a basket full of paper to file/shred. It isn't a huge basket, but it is full already and I hate it. I usually have one big shred every other month (or save it up to take to a shredding event) and then do the filing at the end of the year when prepping for taxes. Yes I can only stand to file once a year.

I hit post to fast.
3cats - keep your computer for you until you are ready to buy a new one. I don't like how your family tries to take advantage of you. First your PC is messing up the internet and then they want you to give it the DGD. grrrhh.

Goals: 15NSD, 10CSD
Update: 0/15 NSD, 1/10CSD
QOTW: I sort the mail as I take it into the house. We don't have recycling back as of yet so everything that is junk is thrown out. Bills are piled in a container for filing. Some items are stored near the shredder.
COTW:-- Bills are files into either binders or an accordion file. These are shredded after a period of time. Need to file more often then I do.
We are expecting a lot of rain this weekend. There is a tropical wave in the gulf that cannot decide what it is going to do. The spaghetti plots are all over the place. Either way we will have plenty of rain this weekend. Good news is that this should help to put out that marsh fire that is continuing to pour smoke over the city and will also help add the water we need to combat the drought conditions that we were beginning to experience again. I just don't want as much rain as I think we are going to get.
I have to get back to work. Will check in later if I can.

spruby;, No one is getting my computer until I get a new one and I get everything off this one that I want. I may even get other things that I don't want. She doesn't need anything but a game machine. She does get on face book and messenger but that is all I am leaving her. She is getting a blank one with games.

The tour of the museum was cool. We actually didn't get a tour we were allowed to wander around in the old mansion. They had several employees around to answer questions. And we ended up talking to the building engineer for a quite a while. DH loved getting to hear how they wired the house back when it was built and hearing about the original electric panel. I think the engineer would have taken DH to see it if there hadn't been so many other people around. They have basically gutted every thing added when it was changed to a museum and are working to restore the main floor to the period of the house. The second floor will be exhibit space and the 3rd floor will be exhibit and classroom space. And they are going to put the soda fountain back in the basement. DH & I are going to go back for the 2.5 hour guided tour. If we can we'll try for this month (it is the 3rd Sunday) if not we'll definitely do it in October.
3cats I'm confused is it the service or your laptop causing the problem?
Money Squirell- Stay safe & dry.
Spurby- How does your points system work?

Dakota, that sounds like a ton of fun! 3cats - I hope you get your technology issues straightened out, nothing frustrates me more than car/computer problems Start and Money - good luck! I'm at 1 CSD and 1 EOD... left my car lights on all day yesterday, and my (most awesome in the world) boss drove downtown to give me a jump, so I bought him lunch today. He was all sheepish and swears he's going to return the favor Tuesday, so that may take care of my lunch spending for another week. Now begins my 4-day weekend ;D

dakota: It was the service that was messing my computer up but not only mine, everybody on this network. No one on the cable had network. But my computer is slowly dying so I am looking for another computer. Still when I log on, the other 5 computers on our home system run slow. DS and DIL each have a laptop. DS, DGS, and DGD each have a desk top. They can run all of their computers and not get logged down, but when I turn mine on, all of them run slow including mine. I suppose if I took it to a place like the Geek Squad, they could fix it but it might cost as much as a new one. There are other places that could look at it but I don't know what to do. I took it to one place and they charged me $150 to redo something, I forget what it was. DS is good with some machines, but he doesn't like "acer-vista". He can build them from the base up and they work great. He just doesn't know what to do with mine. He has tried everything from going on line to reading my manual. It still doesn't work right.

Today will definitely be a spend - my BIL who is a plumber got in the crawl space under the house b/c I thought I had a leak. Nope - turns out I have a dead opossum under my house. Disgusting! So today I have an animal control place coming to remove said dead opossum to the tune of $175.00. At least I don't have to suffer w/the stench through the holiday weekend!

Goals: 10NS 25CSD 25NEO 20MOAN I'M IN My goodness I have been super busy. We are leaving today when DH gets out of work, whenever he his done closing out the month. I have not went grocery shopping or packed for that matter! I posted my 100th post yesterday and a $25 Visa giveaway if you would like to enter: anotherhousewife.wordpress.com/2011/09/01/my-100th-post-and-giveaway/ I have had nearly the same traffic I get in a week in the last 24 hours but not many entries so your chances are good QOTW: I am too embarrassed to answer. We have mail everywhere. Mail gets left in the car because I check it on the run. My desk is overcome with paperwork. I have two big drawers full of mail that needs to be shredded. COTW: Ironically, we do have a great system for mail it just doesn't get used! It works great for us when we use it! After vacation I sill spend time clearing out all of our mail! Dakota: Thanks for the recipe. Those sound yummy. PW has a similar recipe I have been waiting to try. I couldn't find it online just in her cookbook. I'll have to take a closer look and see just how similar they are. I will have to get back to the rest of you and my background a bit later. I should probably get packing and off to the store!

Busy cleaning the house today now that I can use the vacuum and washing machine! My friends aren't coming this weekend, which is for the best as we are both really stressed about everything. The neighbor stopped by yesterday with the estimate for fixing her fence and was expecting us to pay, but once we said our insurance wasn't going to cover it and we were paying everything out of pocket she was extremely nice and we agreed to go halfsies on her fence. So we owe $300 for that. Plus $575 to remove our tree stump. Hoping we can repair our fence ourselves rather than having to get a new section, but we can't tell until the stump is gone. FUN! Glad there's no animosity with the neighbor. I honestly just want it all done and fixed so it's not hanging over our heads... Luckily we do have cash so none of this will go on credit cards.
Was sad to see that our five cukes we had in the fridge are covered with mold. I'd been hoping that stuff would survive... luckily our super producer plant has a few ready to replace them!
I also just spent $200 restocking fridge and freezer (so definitely a spend day), plus a few extras (like bamboo to replace that which Boomer suddenly decided to eat, and cat litter...). The cats are very frisky today. They've already knocked blue's printer off it's stand, so he's in a good mood now... I wish he'd gone in to the office today. He's in the living room and I need to clean and I clean best with crappy nineties music blaring. Maybe I can make him go in his office. That is what it's there for...
I have my training for freelancing at 1pm, then I can start taking projects from the big publisher. I have a project for the original client due next Friday, which I have to work on this weekend. And I have a proofreading test for a potential third client (they do history books - that would be SO up my alley!). Extra income would obviously be helpful at this point...
So, what the heck am I doing sitting here? Came on to check Honey's sink-cleaning method again. I finally found the bottom of my sink again so I'm off to give it a try!!

Welcome Cleanslate! I remember reading your BK thread. You had so much on your plate and some posters were not a lot of help IMHO, I was worried for you. I hope things worked out for you. This is a very supportive group with great advice and understanding.
I am not posting my goals yet since this weekend I will be really examining the whole picture very closely. Well, after Saturday when I will be going to Rapid City for the last hurrah of the summer with some friends. The plans are to visit Border's before it is no more, a used book store and Hobby Lobby then have lunch. I have such wonderful friends, they are as cheap frugal as I am.
As for the mail........I have a slot that drops it inside the house and I am very good at looking at it, at least twice a week. Processing things other than bills can take awhile. Bills I am very prompt with processing. As with some of the other posters, my filing could use a little more attention.
Midwesternjd-- sounds like you DO have the best boss in the world!!
Dakota--I have eaten those ham & egg cups before and they are yummy. Some of the ham cups were filled with beaten eggs and chopped omelet fillings, they were good, too. I don't know which was the better.
Listening to the news lately I am glad to be getting more rigorous about my budget and money practices. Everything seems to be roiling and churning so much that I am really wondering what is ahead. If only I had been as forward thinking and aware as some of the younger posters here are when I was their age.
I guess I should go do SOMETHING with my mail. Everyone have a great holiday weekend!

So, I had planned all week that today for lunch I would get the lunch special pizza from the place next door. It is a small pizza and huge salad for $7.80 and I usually save half the pizza to give to my hubby when I get home. Well, none of my coworkers brought their lunch, so I said lets go to the pizza place a couple miles east of our office (the boss had to run an errand over that direction) and my boss ended up paying.... Now the question is do I count it as a NEO or not? It was a planned eat out, but I didn't pay for it. My vote is a NEO. Yesterday was a NEO, No Soda, and a Moan. Go me. Of course I'm tired enough right now I could so go for a Mt. Dew. Sigh.

dakota - I, too, love Tudor England. I've read a lot of Philippa Gregory's books, but like reenee, I find some of them a bit more difficult to get through. But usually she's pretty good. Alison Weir is excellent and a bit more factual (they aren't novels). I also have been getting into Eleanor. I did a report on her in like third grade or something then forgot about her, but one of my free books from my publicity class was about her. Very strong, intelligent woman, and probably should have run the whole of Europe. The museum tour sounds really cool. I want to do a Gold Coast tour here on LI one of these days. Love the old heyday!
Honey - your method worked pretty well. I think if I do it once or twice more it'll be shiny white! I need to buy more supplies though. I used apple cider vinegar instead of white because i'm out of white. It fizzled a lot so I figured it worked haha. Thanks again!
bills - I don't think I receive any paper bills at all, it's all emailed to me, but it's all usually the same amount each month so the bills don't even matter. I have a spreadsheet that is basically like a check register (I got it from one of you) and I preplan out about three months with the dates each bill usually comes in (I never wait until it's due). Usually it's the 28th of the month I pay everything, as that is the day blue is paid (paid once a month) and then I don't have to worry about anything except gas, groceries, and eating out costs for the rest of the month.

QUICK GOOD NEWS: DH was just crowned sales man of the month!!! SO SUPER EXCITED what a perfect way to start our long weekend. I just returned from the grocery store $106 later and I have everything for our meals for the next four days except about $30 worth of groceries we will get while there. I know that is steep but we are eating more meat than usual, especially since DH loves to grill on vacation. I don't complain because it allows me to lounge around and read! Plus, $150 for four days of eating on vacation is the same as eating out twice for our family so I am okay with that.
Planning Ahead: We will probably roll into the resort around 7p. and because we know from experience in the commotion and excitement of getting checked in and unpacked and being in awe of our place no one wants to cook. SOOOO I have chili simmering in the crock pot and I will take it up with us, warm it up and serve it over tortilla chips and sprinkle with cheese, onions, lettuce, and tomato and serve with a side of canned black beans! Simple, quick, and delicious dinner to avoid grabbing something to eat at a fast food place or worst going to a sit down restaurant!
Muttleyn: It depends on how you are personally tracking: For pure Financial NSD reasons I would count it as a NEO but if you are just tracking personally how many times you eat out then count it.
Seriously, I need to pack!

reenee - I just previewed the new project management software of the future and am so pumped... oh my, I just want to drive to San Francisco and beg them to hire me! If that doesn't work I'll just beg them to sell me the software so I can play with it.

Goals: 15 NSD, 15 MOAN, 20 NEO
QOTW/COTW: I sort and handle my mail when I get it out of the box on my lunch break every day. Bills or filing goes on my desk to be taken care of the next time I balance the paycheck or pay bills, so once or twice a week. I'm pretty on top of it.

Ummm azmom: While your goals are industrious there are only 30 days in Sept so a goal of 35 days sets you up for automatic failure.

So far batting 0 for the month. Was DSIS's b-day yesterday and she was having a TERRIBLE day. Her DH came down ill with what the rest of us have had (her family AND mine) she had to take her DD to the dentist and she is a major drama queen. To take her DD to the dentist she had to cancel her much anticpated hair appointment. (I did NOT mention to her that scheduling that appt on her B-day with the expectations BIL would take her DD was a bit silly) Plus she then got to drive in downtown Mpls traffic including Vikings traffic. So I took her out for a late dinner. We had fun and I of course paid.
Today took DS#1 and DD to the MN Zoo. I had free passes so I only paid $5.00 for parking and $2.00 for popcorn since they were hungry.
Muttley that is quite the drive you have planned. Good luck. Superior is BEAUTIFUL. So enjoy the scenery. When are you going again?
Really frustrated. It seems like it is always something in my life. NOW the county wants to insist I drive DS#2 to his day treatment every day. They have been paying a company to take him. That is 5 days a week about 40-45 weeks a year. Don't know HOW they think I can do that AND deal with a 3 YO AND be there for my 8 YO getting home from school. If I have to drive him that will be 2 hours out of EVERY day..... Oy Veh! Oh and I get reimbursed all of .20 cents a mile.....
