What is a good price for sugar these days? It seems to come in 4 lb bags now. I see it is going to be $2.50 for the 4 lb bag at Vons this weekend but I'm not sure if it will be less at Thanksgiving or not. That doesn't sound like a great price to me but I haven't bought it in a while so I'm not sure. I don't desperately need sugar so if this isn't a good price, I'll pass. Thanks in advance!

For me 2.50 for 4 pounds is a great price. I don't buy a lot of sugar anymore, so I am not sure if it's a stock up price or not, but I have not see sugar for 2.50 lately.

It's a decent price. Not stock up. Wags had Domino 4lb. bags for 2.49 last week and there are .50/1 coupons out right now, and since I had just opened my last container, I bought one. I rarely see it for less than 2.50 anymore...

Thanks for the info! I feel so old. I remember (doesn't seem like that long ago but it probably is) when regularly you could get flour for $.69 for 5 pounds and sugar $.99 for 5 pounds around Thanksgiving. I think Costco has the 10 pound (or are they down to 8 pounds now) and I know that used to be a not too bad deal. I won't have time to go there before this weekend though. If I end up going to VONS to buy Oreos ($1.99--a pretty good price) then I might pick up 1 bag to have on hand.

Well I have been trying to become more coupon savvy over the last year. Why? Because last year with my MVP alone I saved just over $1000. This year I have set a goal of $2000. As of this past weekend I have saved YTD $1167 and some change. I saved $90 in one shopping trip. Now I dont want to have a garage full of salad dressing or toothpaste but I do want to save as much as possible. I am only using one store, with the exception of quick buys like milk and bread and I only buy cokes if they are on sale cause they get extremely expensive at times. And I am only getting coupons from one online free coupon site. www.grocerycouponcart.com/print-coupons?cid=16253083,16256173,16261027,16260383,16261030,16263012,16263066,16309018,16313103,16196384 (sorry still new at the whole highlight and paste thing here) And I am only purposefully using them for food items right now. Of course I use coupons for restaurants when I can. But we dont eat out a lot. I'm always open to learning new ways to save. I love saving money. It really does turn into a game of me vs. them.

Lol...that is so true BeachBum! I think a lot of things are priced high here in OR because they are shipped from across the country (i.e cereal). Other things that are grown here (berries, fruit) are much more reasonable. I've read a lot of bloggers who say one should never pay more than $1 for a box of cereal. Well, shoot, even with coupons, cats, doubles, the rock bottom price is usually $1.25 - $1.50 for me. Yeah that would mean we never buy cereal again either. We don't get doubles down here even at places that double in other areas with small exception. Shoprite will double up to 50 cents. Considering most things cost more than a buck now that means no freebies almost ever. And if milk is under $5 a gallon it is a good price. They don't do that many catalina deals either. They have a big dollar days event every year that they have them in bunches but mostly nada. Oh well I still got all that free tp.

Yeah, that was only a few years ago that you could get those prices you mentioned so don't feel old! I think sugar is something that we will rarely see go cheap in the future. The reason is two-fold: 1. Corn has been diverted from the use of corn syrup to fuel (Ethanol) creating more demand for regular sugar as there is less corn to substitute. Hence, the rise in all things sweet. 2. Fuel costs are high and sugar is heavy, so it costs quite a bit to transport.

Ruby - don't buy the cream soups, unless you need it. I got the Campbell's for 40c/can at Meijer last year. The deeper we get into winter, the better the soup deals & Qs will be. Also Healthy Balance juice is on sale for $1.67 (thru Sept 25). There's a 50c/1 Q on their site. I was able to print 12 Qs, before it told me the print limit was reached. I always check with the Bricks Qs, cause sometimes it will allow you to print more than 2. Back to the grindstone.

leanna asked " What's an MVP?"
Its the loyalty card for Food Lion -- a mid-Atlantic store. I find the non-sale prices to be somewhat to very high, but from time to time, they have 'killer' deals. (I'm still eating the free Kraft cheese) Just be careful about buying everything from one store -- "it pays to shop around" --

Most valuable Shopper. It's an in store discount card. The them is the store. Well most stores do things in cycles. It's the same sales every month and at the same time of the month. At the beginning of the month there isnt a whole of sales but there are things that are cheaper like canned foods and staples like flour and sugar and cooking oils. About the end of the month things go on sale. "10 for 10" and BOGOs are every where. I understand wanting to shop around but then I think you get into a race with trying to keep up with who is doing what when and a person can spend a ton of money in gas trying to get the cheapest pot pie. Shopping in one place also saves time because I know where everything is in my store. I can arrange my shopping lists according to aisles, and yes I do that. I go to other places for things like cleaning supplies and paper goods, things like that, because honestly the prices at my Food Lion are high on those. And when you get to know the people working there and they get to know you, they are amazing at helping with inside deals and telling you when something is coming up you'll want to get in on. I also like those bonus coupon sheets that give you money off your next purchase. I had three this last trip and used them and got $16 off my total. It was a free $16 dollars. I think I've used over $100 so far this year.

Kathy, thanks for the happy birthday.
Dancin, poor Buddy! I guess even though he's a beagle, he's still a "man."
Snoopy is headed to the vet this week. I thought Saturday we'd be in for an E.R. visit as well. I had the housekeeper over and he was jumping up and down like a maniac and hurt his back/hip/leg. He had the hip socket surgery as a pup and every once in a while it goes out. I could see his hips were swollen and he cried a little when I pet his back. Poor baby. But we got through the weekend with aspirin and it was better by Monday so vet tomorrow.
Loyalty card: For certain deals I have scanned my card last before. Some cashiers don't care and some give a hard time. I just insist I want it scanned last because I want to see what I would have paid and what I saved. Some grumpy ones moan the receipt shows me that and I just say, I like to see the numbers go down live. One even said "well if your discounts get messed up it's because you scanned the card last." Um, ok, whatever.

lily: WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME to the Grocery Challenge from me - dancinmama!! ;D We're so happy you found us and jumped right in. I guess I'm lucky because my two major grocery chains are close to my home and within a block of each other. If you are getting most of the items that you buy regularly at rock bottom prices (and combine with coupons when you can), your savings will be about as good as you can get. So glad that you joined us and we look forward to reading your posts.

oreo: At $2.50/4 lbs. I'd probably snag one (if that will last you a couple of months) and hope it goes lower for the holidays, but there's no guarantee of that. I can tell that what I have is from CVS and WAGs so I'm sure that I used "for profit" drug chain rewards to get it - not as easy to do as it used to be. I currently have 42 lbs. of white sugar in my stockpile. As soon as I got the word that prices would be skyrocketing, I stockpiled coffee and sugar (white, brown, AND powdered). My pantry is cool and dry so it should keep a very long time.

Thanks for the explanation of the MVP card. I don't have that particular store where I live. But I always want to know what something is, in case I am missing out on something! LOL Lily - I didn't realize you were new. Welcome!!! Yeah, I know what you mean about shopping in one place vs running around. I do a lot of running around these days, but I have the time to do it. When I get back to working, I will probably mainly be hitting just a few stores. Happy Birthday Blues Clues! DancinMama - That is AWESOME that you have 42 lbs of sugar!

Oh well I still got all that free tp. beachbum: I am so glad that you were able to stockpile a bunch of that TP. I haven't had any doubled coupons at a grocery store since 2003. As soon as the drug chains started offering rewards, I was all over that like white on rice. Between 2003 and 2006 (around the time when WAGs started offering RRs), all I could do is shop rock bottom prices and get the face value for my coupons. Thank goodness for drug chain rewards.

Thank you for the birthday wishes. Since Dancin' has 42 pounds of sugar, I think she should bake us all a giant cake.

Since we're having such a slow hounding time...I thought I'd share something about my dinner (which is about groceries.)
For July 4th, we had bbq'd some of those Oscar Meyer hot dogs that are nitrite/nitrate free (I'm allergic to those preservatives, so I am thrilled these are on the market.)
We didn't eat 'em all, so I froze some that we had bbq'd. Yeah, I realize that probably sounds really weird to freeze cooked hot dogs. But why not? These days things are costing so much I feel obligated to do even more to keep our costs down.
Well, I just microwaved a couple of them that I froze - and yum - seriously - tasted fresh - surprisingly! So, lol, for anyone who would happen to want to know how bbq'd hot dogs taste if you freeze 'em...now you know!

I noticed that in next week's CVS ad, they have Dawn Dish Liquid on sale for $.99. In the last P&G Brand Saver there was a $.75/1 on the renewal variety so $.24 plus tax per bottle. I looked at the bottles and they have reduced the quantity AGAIN. In just about a year's time they have decreased the quantity from 11 oz. to 10 oz. and now down to 9 oz. That is an 18% decrease in product for the same sales price. If you use Dawn and have not yet stockpiled it, $.24 plus tax is a pretty good price; better if you can pay your OOP with EBs. ETA: I noticed that some lucky people got $1/1 off Dawn in their P&G inserts - all the better cuz then it's FREE!! ;D

Happy Birhtday, Blues! Hope you've had a great day!! Dancin', since you have so much sugar, how about some 'rtia's instead of cakes??? :-) NAG: So my 7-year old is in a wedding this coming New Years Eve. The bride found the dress she wanted her to wear, so I went online tonight to order it. Well, it was already on sale for $56.95 (from $110)..I then found a coupon code to take off an additional 5%, so something like $54 before the $12.00 shipping... So $66 after shipping and taxes and discount taken off. The BEST part?? When I logged in to my PayPal account, I found a credit for $73.00 from 2008 that I had forgotten all about!! I just bought my daughter's Jr. Bridesmaid dress for, drumroll please... $0 OOP!! :-) The credit was from something I bought for my brother to give our parents for Christmas...back in 2008.. Guess this would qualify for a case of SEVERE CRS??? :-) Not much shopping for me the past few weeks...not a lot of time and not a lot that we need. I'm trying to eat from the freezer since we have so much in there right now. Oreo, I apologize, but I don't recall what area of the country you are from, or if you have an Aldi's around, but I recently bought a 4-pound bag of sugar there for just under $2.00. I have one box of brown sugar left from the 17-pounds I started with at the beginning of the year. And dishwasher detergent? Yeah, we still have 5 boxes of the Electrasol from the really good Q that came out at the beginning of the year:) Hopefully I'll have enough to last until the next good Q....:-) Ok. Enough of my random thoughts!
