QUESTION - what's going on with coupons.com? for about a month i have not been able to access coupons.com through any links on any reputable site (HCW, mypoints) or even clicking through a google search. does anyone know what is going on with that site? or know what to do with my 'puter if it's an issue on my end? jdnstl: For whatever reason, I've ALWAYS had problems with coupons.com. Most of the time either take a REALLY long time to print or they get stuck in some kind of loop and don't print at all.

I kinda laughed when I went to get my paper this morning...it has a big article on the front called "Going Cuckoo for Coupons" complete with a picture of some woman's stockpile. www.newsobserver.com/2011/09/25/1516067/going-cuckoo-for-coupons.htmlIt didn't really say anything that I didn't already know, except that apparently there will be two NC couponers on this season. Lowes Foods is a NC based chain that agreed to participate in the show...they already regret it and the show hasn't even aired yet

CVS: Yesterday I cashed out ECB on DH card to buy a box of spaghetti and earned $1.00 for greenbag tag, so I bought another one. I used a raincheck for Schick Hydra razors buy $20.00 get $10.00 ECB. They were $23.97 for 3 minus $4.00/20.00 minus $15.00 IPQ's minus $4.97 ECB's and I got $10.00 in ECBs's back. Not too bad getting 3 nice razors and 2 boxes of spaghetti for $.99 OOP. The greenbag tag has earned me $25.00 since I started using it. CRT machine is still spitting out the $1.00 off Reeses candy bars and next week they're on sale for $1.00. Skubikky: Someone beat me to Walmart and cleared the shelf of those razors which were giving overage. I was all set to get 4 packs and 2 bottles of All detergent for free. We got the Big Lots flier and All is $3.00 this week minus the $1.00 MQ. At least the razor coupons have a longer expiration date than usual. Sorry to hear about the cleared shelf....rats! I'll see if I have time this week and look at WM for the cheap Schick razors. Need to see if my Big Lots is doing $3 All. Not sure if my WM price matches. Do they have a national store policy on that or is it YMMV?

I believe the sale on All was last week though. I did read that there are $3.00 MQ's inside the package of Schick razors that are $1.97. I haven't checked mine out yet.

After my coupon roundup, I went into CVS. They were already almost out of all the FREE items. I got a rain check for the Excedrin. It is my headache OTC med of choice. I scanned my card and did get the $1/3 Gold Emblem soup or broth. I wonder if I should use it if the manager gives me those ready-to-expire cans at a deep discount. Does anyone know whether the GE broth CRT is printing more than one time in the week? It would be awesome if I could get another one. I also ran into Safeway. They have Rice A Roni on sale for $.75 when you buy (8) or more. I KNEW they'd be out of the rice pilaf variety and got a rain check for it. There used to be coupons for this ALL THE TIME, but I don't think I've seen any in over a year. So I'll hope for some, but $.75 is still a pretty good price.

ooty - If you don't end up finding a good deal on one, let me know. I'm a seamstress. Just finished up a classic trench style coat for myself, 100% wool and it only cost me about $50 to make. I'm a bigger girl, so it would have cost 4x that, easily, even with a good sale.

ooty,
Keep checking in jcpenney.com in the clearance section. I was able to get a really great deal on a pea coat last year using sale and coupons. I bought it at the end of winter. HTH

Did anyone else have problems yesterday with the inserts? I had some pages that were missing the black ink so the barcodes didn't print out. Thankfully it wasn't for anything that I use.

Guess I won't have to worry about the CVS coupons--my paper didn't have it. It was advertised on the regular circular but we didn't get one. Oh well....
Dancin: Is the rice pilaf variety of Rice-a-Roni good? I try not to use R-a-R much as the sodium content is really, really high. But I do like Rice Pilaf so I'll give that package a looksie.
BTW, has your DH heard anything else about his division? Keeping fingers crossed for good news.

BTW, has your DH heard anything else about his division? Keeping fingers crossed for good news. murphath: The Rice-A-Roni rice pilaf is no different than other prepackaged stuff, but DH likes it so I pick up a few boxes every time it's on sale. The rock bottom price has been $1, but this time it was $.75 so that's why I wanted the rain check. THANK YOU for asking about DH's job. It looks like he'll survive without layoff until after he turns 55 which is a huge milestone (pension, retiree medical for both of us, and the ability to draw from his 401k without penalty). We'd also like to know what the government plans to do with Medicare for anyone turning 55 after 2011 because Crohn's (DH diagnosed in 2009) can get EXTREMELY expensive. As you can imagine, morale where DH works is really low. Either people are getting prepared to receive their last check or they are getting ready to take on more work with no prospect of any increase in pay. The executive VP had an all hands meeting a few weeks ago and was asked about the prospect of job sharing vs people totally loosing their jobs. The VP actually CHUCKLED and said, "Ya - more like one person sharing 3 jobs (in other words taking on much more work) instead of 2 people sharing one job." That kind of off-the-cuff response by the leader of the division has set the tone. People who are already overworked are being told to "work smarter" - as if they are not doing everything they can to "work smart" already. It is going to be a difficult few months and DH's patience with the politics at work is running very thin, but he's hanging in there. Again, THANK YOU so much for asking.

kathy, You beat me to it! I'm actually the BTFE Coordinator at the kids' school. My 7-year old and I were sorting the ones we had last night and found one that had expired in March of 2003. We had a pretty good laugh about that! It's a LOT of work, but when the check comes in right before Christmas break and right before the end of the school year, it's WORTH IT!!!! I'm thinking the kids and I might need to take a run to Walmart tonight before their soccer team pictures. I also noticed that Toys-R-Us had their Hershey (I think) candy on sale for $1.99 per bag, and I had a $1.50/3 coupon in my Sunday insert. Not the best, but the best I can come up with right now.

I called my Home Depot and they said that they don't even carry the 4-packs, but that doesn't mean other locations don't have them. They did have Bounty Basic on clearance for $.75/roll. I'd be tempted to get some if Home Depot wasn't across town.

Hola Hounds!
I didn't see this posted yet, just wondering if everyone knew about it. Free bodywash at RiteAid; the Softsoap bodywash is 2.99, get 2 EBs (limit 4). There was a $1.00 coupon in yesterdays Smartsource.

There was a $1.00 coupon in yesterdays Smartsource. Thank you Mandyms! I had bought 2 newspapers on Sunday, but hated to do so because the price had jumped to $2.00 each newspaper from $1.50. I bought 2 Softsoaps at CVS for $6.00, used 2 $1.00 off coupons, then paid with a $3.79 EB. I had 21 cents plus tax OOP to pay. I then received $4.00 back in EB's. My sis gave me one more coupon for $1.00 off Softsoap. I will cash it in at Rite Aid.

RE Extreme Couponing show: I've only watched one episode cuz my satellite dish just got repaired! At any rate, it was a woman who, as Dancinmama said, had all kinds of drama at checkout. They did say she spent @ 70 hours/week searching/researching/clipping/buying q's and shopping. Her whole house was filled to the brim. I believe she spent @ $80 or so on q's for the trip they showed--something like that. At any rate, her before q total was a little over $1,000. Her after q total was a little over $100. I did the exact math afterwards, and her savings was in the 80% range when you include what she spent on the q's. That's the piece they conveniently forget to figure in at the end. That % is above mine at the grocery store, but she had some doubles (Kroger does that in the mid-west, right? Think she lived in Cincinatti). At any rate, with q's, loyalty card etc., my grocery store savings can be anywhere from 60-80%. So, although I'm not an extreme couponer, I'd take my cart over hers anyday. My biggest expense is for produce and I try to mitigate that by going to a great produce stand every now and again--it's 16 miles away but close to my old work. I'm taking a class there on Mondays, so I stop at the stand to stock up. Also grew my own tomatoes (the squirrels actually left them alone this year!) and my strawberry patch was fantastic! Even with that, I probably spend at least $30 week on produce--we are fruit and veggie fanatics! Of course, I just hate these shows. They make the people look like crazed fanatics with nothing else to do. Besides, I can't use a gazillion coupons at Von's. Mine only allows 2 or 3 or the same type of coupon. Because of that show, my cashiers are ultra strict with me now. I wonder how long this is going to last.

Good morning Ladies, I hope everyone is doing okay. HOUND ALERT....its a long shot & odd one but ....-------------------------------------------------- $25 Miller Rebate wyb purchase a 12 pack or larger of Miller Lite, Miller Genuine Draft or MGD 64, together with $100 worth of groceries. Purchases must be between 8/1/11 thru 9/18/11 and post-marked by 10/3/1. Valid States: AK, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, KS, MA, MD, MI, MS, MT, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, VT, WA, WI and WY. There is another one out with different purchases dates + 24 pack which is why I underlined those. -------------------------------------------------- I was thought I was going to get one from someone but it turned out to be a misunderstanding. All I'm missing is the rebate form and as you can see the postmark date is close. I know its a long shot, but I figured why not ask. Thanks.

Dancinmama: Glad to hear your DH is safe, although that kind of job stress is not good for Chron's I'd imagine. What you described is the main reason I took the early retirement a year ago. I was a single person office serving the students (testing) and literally could not get out of the office. I was lucky if I could run to the fridge to retrieve my lunch. I did testing at all three campus sites and all the area high schools. They wanted the office open from 8am-7pm--how do you do that with only 1 person? So I had to vary my schedule which did not make the morning students happy, etc. Loved the job, loved the students, hated the politics. So, after working 18 years there, I took the package. It has been an adjustment, to say the least. I could not have done it w/o the medical plan coverage. I take a class there every Monday and when I run into former colleagues, they all look so tense and unhappy. Now they've agreed to 8 furlough days/year. I'm just so happy with my little, itty bitty, pin money P/T job at Weight Watchers--just enough to mingle with some folks, help me keep my weight off, and make some hounding money. Tough to give up my full salary, but we'll be just fine. I'm sure you & your DH will be, too!

Well, you all know how much I don't like to shop at WAGS, but I really got some great deals last week using the $3/$10 q at their new store. Ended the week with $3 & $2 RR. So, I did the following: 1 Schick Quatro razor $8.99 (this was the last one---there's definitely a shelf clearer out there ) 2 cans Hunts tomato sauce .66 (with in ad q) 1 Balance Bar $1.59 Minus: Schick Quatro $5 q .55 Balance Bar q 9/11 SS $3 RR $2 RR Total OOP: $1.61 (includes tax) Received $5 EB for razor and $1.60 EB for Balance bar Now I have to wait to see if the Optic White toothpaste gets restocked as it was all gone! Have a great day ladies--must get dressed now to walk to the bank with DH-@ 8 miles roundtrip. It's a beautiful day--mid-seventies which is my kind of weather.

I ran in to a local grocery store this morning and had a conversation with an employee and another customer. The employee asked if we watched "Extreme Couponing." I told her I had seen it a couple of times but didn't care for it, that in reality, it wasn't realistic. I mean this as NO disrespect whatsoever, so I apologize if it comes across that way. The lady in front of me, who was using several WIC vouchers. She said she watches it regularly and is able to get her food bill down quite a bit by using the tricks she learned on that show. Um, I know it's 5:30am CT and I'm going to be late for work because it's taking the poor cashier FOREVER to complete your transactions because you are too busy talking to sign what you need to, but how are you able to use coupons for formula when you are using WIC vouchers? The employee told the gal their store only will only accept a max of 15 coupons PER TRANSACTION. Of course I had to express my opinion about how much I really disliked that show, that it really doesn't shed a good light on how to save money. The stores that are "featured" (for lack of a better word) either accept unlimited double coupons, or they make an exception for "TV face time." I asked them both if they would really use 65 bottles of mustard, especially if they didn't even LIKE it to begin with? The other customer then pipes up with "Oh. I don't use my coupons here. I use them at a different store, where they'll accept however many I want to use." Sure, but their prices are also much higher! I had to agree with her about Target and being able to use a MFQ with a Target q to get things (in her case it was diapers) at a good price. She was PROUD of her $4.00 diapers. All I could think of was.... but the gals on here get them for LESS THAN THAT!!! She was VERY pro-EC. It was pretty scary. I wasn't awake enough to "argue", I mean logically discuss the show... I hadn't really seen it enough, either. Maybe the first one or two episodes and after that it was "bleah...there are other things on to watch." Sorry. I'm finished now.

We're hoping that worse case, he'll be retiring no later than January 2013. If we find out about Medicare and/or they "offer" him a layoff in 2012, he's out of there!! ;D

I'm finished now. missourimommy: For someone who has never considered using multiple coupons to stockpile an item when it is on sale, Extreme Couponing CAN BE a real eye opener (i.e. if saving on one package of something is great, saving on 10 is better). I watched a few episodes in Season 1 and I never recall anyone talking about using a price book which is a necessity in terms of really knowing a good price from a great price and savings vs OOP. What I mean to say is that if I have to spend $5 to save $10, that still might be more than I want or NEED to spend depending on the item and how badly I need it. On the Grocery Challenge, yes, we have focused on coupon savings, but more importantly on OOP which is what REALLY matters. A few posters outside the Grocery Challenge constantly want to know HOW MUCH I save and are floored when I tell them that I have no clue because I don't keep track. To me what is more important is how much I HAVE TO SPEND to get those savings and historically for me that has always been minimal (pennies on the dollar or free or sales tax only). Someone who decides to use coupons based on watching EC should not only look at what they can "save" by using coupons, but equally on what they spend to get those savings.

Glad everyone is doing well! I enjoy reading everyone's posts even when I don't post. Truthfully I don't use a price book. I never have. It is not a problem for me to remember what good prices are. I just never needed to write it down. I don't think I have a huge list of things that I buy with any regularity though. Maybe if we bought more stuff I might feel the need but for now it isn't. My biggest issue is more knowing the best price for me in my area and seeing a sale that is more than that but less than it has been in a while. I never sure if that is the new low or just a tease. I do notice that when I read here on WIR or blogs that people mention prices that are way too high and I will think that is way lower than I could ever get. That makes me thankful for what I do get really inexpensively.

In times of rising prices, sometimes it is hard to know an old 'okay' sales ad price from a 'new' stockpile price. In my area the stockpile price for Rice A Roni and Noodle Roni has been $1 for the last 6-9 months (up from $.88/box); this week, low and behold it was on sale for $.75. I still have 5 boxes in my pantry from the last time I bought it @ $1. That's $1.25 that I could have saved, but I really never thought that they'd drop the price to $.75. Sometimes it's just a crap shoot. I was able to get a couple of rain checks for the Rice A Roni. Even though we used to get coupons for it all the time, I can't remember the last time one came out; but I thought I MIGHT get lucky - or look for a toll free number on the product and request coupons. If not, I'll just stockpile @ $.75/box. Many of us who have been doing this for a while, don't actually keep a detailed price book any more. But for those people who in the past have just gone shopping without much thought to what is on ad, the concept of a price book is probably completely foreign and would be a great and helpful addition to EC to familiarize people with sales cycles. Unfortunately, the show is more about $$$ for those featured and TLC than actually helping people learn to save money when grocery shopping.
