MN-InvestorMessage #589 - 07/08/10 10:26 AMThe answer is 1. Because I didn't know how to find x where x^ x=0.20788, I googled 0.20788 and power and found that i, when raised to the i-th power, is approximately 0.20788! (The discussion of why that is so may be found [ www.math.hmc.edu/funfacts/ffiles/20013.3.shtml] here.) And any high school math student remembers that i is the imaginary number such that i squared is -1. So if the problem is looking for x^4, that would be (i^2 x i^2), or (-1 x -1), or 1. GameshowMessage #590 - 07/08/10 05:22 PMSpoiler Here's my stab at it. x^2 = 0.20788 x^2 = x * x x^4 = x * x * x * x thus x^4 = (x^2)*(x^2) or x^4 = (x^2)^2 Thus, I replace x^2 with 0.20788. I get X^4 = (0.20788)^2 = 0.20788 * 0.20788 = 0.0432 So my answer is 0.0432 -Ben MN-InvestorMessage #591 - 07/08/10 06:21 PMHere's my stab at it. x^2 = 0.20788 x^2 = x * x No, go back and read the problem. It is x^x=0.20788, not x^2=0.20788. GameshowMessage #592 - 07/09/10 12:04 AMThanks MN investor... It is not X^2... This is a tricky one Interesting how i^i is .20788 So I guess, i^4 would be 1 -Ben

Virgil SyonidMessage #597 - 09/20/10 04:29 AMProblem 46 - You Don't Know Math! Part 2 - Fluoride, Fluoride, Everywhere! You are a water treatment engineer. You monitor fluoride levels in three of North America's chronically overfluoridated water supplies. Your underling hands you a census that summarizes illnesses from the three communities you oversee: Number of Osteoporosis Cases (Average): 2 2/3 Number of Severe Dental Fluorsis Cases (Average): 8 Number of Mild Dental Fluorosis Cases (Average): 26 2/3 "Curses!" You cry. "You didn't get the average for 'nausea and diarrhea'." "No sweat." Your underling says. "The CDC Fluoridated Water Guide states: The number of osteoporosis cases in a community is exactly equal to the fluoride concentration (in mg/L) of its water supply. The number of severe dental fluorosis cases is exactly equal to the square of the concentration. The number of mild dental fluorosis cases is exactly equal to the cube of the concentration." "And," he smiles, " the number of nausea/diarrhea cases is exactly equal to the fourth power of the concentration." "How is that supposed to help me?" You ask. "For each illness, you've only given me the average number of cases over all three communities." "Sorry boss." Your underling says. "That's your problem." Assuming you've run out of time to perform another census, how do you determine the average number of nausea/diarrhea cases in your three communities? tall_guyMessage #598 - 09/20/10 05:14 AMSPOILER 96 It's a LONG explanation.... Virgil SyonidMessage #605 - 09/21/10 12:05 AM(Solution to Problem 46)Tall gives the correct answer in #598, and the correct answer to the modified problem in #601. I'm actually fairly curious as to how he did it; it was one of the harder nuts to crack. Essentially, let a, b, and c represent the concentrations at the three communities. Then we know: (a + b + c)/3 = 2 2/3; hence a + b + c = 8 (a^2 + b^2 + c^2)/3 = 8; hence a^2 + b^2 + c^2 = 24 (a^3 + b^3 + c^3)/3 = 26 2/3; hence a^3 + b^3 + c^3 = 80 Instructions on how to determine a^4 + b^4 + c^4 from these three equalities are given elegantly [ www.qbyte.org/puzzles/p079s.html] here. Virgil SyonidMessage #606 - 09/21/10 12:06 AMProblem 47 - Robots on a LineOne of my favourites, from Facebook. No Googling the answer! ![](http://www.bigriddles.com/images/riddles/robots-on-a-line.png) Two robots are placed at different points on a straight line of infinite length. When they are first placed down, they each spray out some oil to mark their starting points. You must program each robot to ensure that the robots will eventually crash into each other. A program can consist of the following four instructions: * Go left one space * Go right one space * Skip the next instruction if there is oil in my current spot * Go to a label [Note that a "label" is a name that refers to a line of your code. For example, you could label the third line of your program "surveying". Then, the instruction "goto surveying" would jump to line 3 and start executing from there on the next cycle.] A robot will carry out one instruction per second. Both robots need not have the same program. Note that you won't know ahead of time which robot is on the left and which is on the right. What is your program? SlowbutSureMessage #607 - 09/21/10 12:19 AMWhen they are first placed down, they each spray out some oil to mark their starting points.
Ut oh! TG is gonna get you for that; that's robot scat! What is your program? M'eh, I'm more concerned about the pollution you are causing. Angel 33Message #609 - 09/21/10 12:30 AM SlowbutSureMessage #610 - 09/21/10 02:40 AMAre the two robots able to communicate to one another (e.g., Robot A senses fluoride and can tell Robot B to reverse direction)? rovoMessage #611 - 09/21/10 02:46 AMRobot A senses fluoride and can tell Robot B to reverse direction Not according to Virgil's instruction list. I don't see any nice program to do the task but of course the instruction set is more than a little limited. The infinite line is what gets me because the robots could be at either end of the infinite line. SlowbutSureMessage #612 - 09/21/10 02:51 AMThe infinite line is what gets me because the robots could be at either end of the infinite line. Exactly, so how can they eventually crash into one another unless they can somehow detect the other's scat and communicate? I think Virgil deliberately left out some key information. ![](http://boards.msn.com/Themes/default/emoticons/48_48.gif)

SlowbutSureMessage #613 - 09/21/10 02:54 AMDo the robots have to travel along the straight line (e.g., if Robot A detects Robot B's fluoride after X seconds, can Robot A now go into direction Y at an angle Z)? ETA: Nevermind, they still have to communicate to the other one, so Robot B would also go into a different direction. rovoMessage #614 - 09/21/10 02:58 AMI too think something is missing. If they both go the same direction they will never meet. (I'm discounting time/space warps) Sure, one will see the others scat but BFD. If they go the opposite way from each other they will never meet. I mean you could play the game of X steps left and then 2X right, (2X+1) left, ad nausea but they would eventually meet but it may take an infinite amount of time. rovoMessage #615 - 09/21/10 03:06 AMTell robot A to stay put and then have robot B dither back and forth while adding one step to each dither. Very inefficient for code, memory, and it could take forever, but at least it would find it eventually. Virgil SyonidMessage #616 - 09/21/10 03:56 AMI mean you could play the game of X steps left and then 2X right, (2X+1) left, ad nausea but they would eventually meet but it may take an infinite amount of time. Tell robot A to stay put and then have robot B dither back and forth while adding one step to each dither. Since the robots can start at any distance apart, there is no limit as to how long it should take for the two robots to crash into each other. But for the technically inclined, I'll add some more technical rigour: - When I state "the robots can take an infinite amount of time to collide", I mean the following: given any integer D, which is the starting position of robot 1 - the starting position of robot 2, there exists N < (infinity) such that the robots are guaranteed collide in <= N timesteps. Hence, "infinite" here is infinite in the bounded-input, bounded-output sense.
- The number of coding instruction for each robot is finite. That is, given a code size of M < (infinity) instructions, there can not exist any distance D (as defined above) for which the robots fail to collide.
- The robots cannot communicate with each other. The only available instructions are given in the problem statement.
- The problem is 1-D. The robots can only move along the line (in accordance with the move left and move right instructions.)
Hence, rovo, your solution in #614 violates condition 2. It requires an infinite amount of code. There is a solution where each robot only has a few lines of code. ![](http://boards.msn.com/Themes/default/emoticons/wink_smile.gif)

Virgil SyonidMessage #617 - 09/21/10 03:59 AMHINT: Don't think "direction". Think "speed". tall_guyMessage #618 - 09/21/10 06:46 AM Tall gives the correct answer in #598, and the correct answer to the modified problem in #601. I'm actually fairly curious as to how he did it; it was one of the harder nuts to crack.
It was magic. ![](http://boards.msn.com/Themes/default/emoticons/wink_smile.gif) Candy Cane ColleenzMessage #619 - 09/21/10 02:32 PMVirgil - Here is your Google thanks for the gross pics in the Engineering thread: (SPOILER ALERT) The solution to this problem is to just have both robots move consistently in one direction, but not at full speed. Then, have either robot pick up to full speed when it sees oil again (which will only happen for one robot). This robot will eventually catch up to the other robot, causing a collision. Virgil SyonidMessage #620 - 09/22/10 01:08 AM(Solution to Problem 47)Colleenz "sort of" gives the correct solution in #619, although her solution isn't expressed in the language of the problem. The correct code is: [begin]:MOVE LEFT 1MOVE RIGHT 1MOVE RIGHT 1IF OIL SKIP NEXTGOTO [begin][zoom]:MOVE RIGHT 1GOTO [zoom]Colleenz' explanation is correct: both robots move right at an average rate of 0.2 units per second. When one robot (it doesn't matter which one) hits the other's oil, it speeds up to 0.5 units per second. This faster robot will eventually crash into the slower one.

Virgil SyonidMessage #621 - 09/22/10 01:12 AMProblem 48 - The Seven-HaterMeet Jake. Jake's wife died from fluorine poisoning on January 7th and hence Jake hates the number 7. Everyone knows that if you throw two normal dice, their total will add up to a number between 2 and 12 inclusive. But Jake is an inventor and since he hates the number 7, he wishes to invent a pair of six-sided dice where: - each die face has at least one dot
- the two dice can sum to every number between 2 and 12 except 7
- the dice cannot sum up to a number greater than 12
Jake quickly discovers that the two dice must be different and that the same number of dots can appear on more than one die face. So for instance, a dice with values: 2 3 4 5 5 5 would be OK. What two dice does Jake come up with? SlowbutSureMessage #622 - 09/22/10 03:34 AM![](http://boards.msn.com/Themes/default/emoticons/50_50.gif) <<SBS wonders what Virgil has up his sleeve. Let's say 2 and 4 as they are representative of the USEPA fluoride guidance and levels. Die 2: Four of the sides must be 1, 2, 7 and 8. The other two sides could be any of the previous numbers. Let's say 7 on both sides to remind Jake what an idiot his wife was to drink Deep Rock bottled water instead of good 'ol tap water. Walla! Virgil SyonidMessage #623 - 09/22/10 04:29 AMYou want a harder one? --appleMessage #693 - 10/14/10 01:50 AMBecause when you are tied up to the bed and threatened with being touched you'll be nice and have a prolonged verbal relationship with anyone if it means you might get to see your son again. That, and I'm sure since he has such a problem with plastic wrap, banana peels and twist ties his knots will be a little lacking in strength, and you can tick him off enough by talking that you can distract him and eventually free yourself from the restraints. Just a thought... Virgil SyonidMessage #694 - 10/14/10 05:28 AM(Solution to Problem 50)A lot of winners on this one. ![](http://boards.msn.com/Themes/default/emoticons/thumbs_up.gif) Solutions are as follows, along with the solvers. 1 - "Tennessee" (SBS) 2 - "Too Stuck Up for Words" (SBS) 3 - "Criminal" (SBS) 4 - "Death Valley" (Beerwench) 5 - "Mixed Odds and Ends" (--apple) 6 - "Once Upon a Time" (SBS) 7 - "Who's in Charge?" In this game, letters of a word are rearranged and one letter may be exchanged for another letter. For example, 'APPLE' could become 'PLEAS', and 'PLEAS' could become 'LEASH'. The following problems have one or more missing words. The word chains should connect the first word to the last word according to the rules of the word-change game. Unlike the word-change thread, letters cannot be added or dropped. All words have the same number of letters (as shown by the blanks). Again, as an example: APPLE > _ _ _ _ _ > LEASH would have "PLEAS", "LAPSE", "LEAPS", "PALES", "PEALS", "SPALE", "SALEP", "SEPAL", or "ALEPH" as correct answers. In most cases, there will only be one correct answer. Some problems have extra conditions () to make them tougher. ![](http://boards.msn.com/Themes/default/emoticons/48_48.gif) Each problem has a point value based on difficulty. The first poster to find a correct solution for a problem wins the points for that problem. The poster with the most points ![](http://boards.msn.com/Themes/default/emoticons/star.gif) wins ![](http://boards.msn.com/Themes/default/emoticons/star.gif) ! So... do you have what it takes to handle the word-change game? (P.S. No peeking at the word-change thread for hints or answers! ![](http://boards.msn.com/Themes/default/emoticons/angry_smile.gif) ) Problems:- SUBLETS > _ _ _ _ _ _ _ > BUSTIER (5 points)
- TRACED > _ _ _ _ _ _ > RETAKE (6 points)
- TRAIPSE > _ _ _ _ _ _ _ > PRESIDE (8 points)
- SMOLDERING > _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ > GONDOLIERE (10 points)
- LANCETS > _ _ _ _ _ _ _ > CRYSTAL (10 points)
- STAMPING > _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ > NEPOTISM (10 points)
- DECREASE > _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ > RECALLED (C cannot appear next to A!) (13 points)
- DEFILES > _ _ _ _ _ _ _ > DIREFUL (E cannot appear next to D!) (13 points)
- SALTIER > _ _ _ _ _ _ _ > STIFLED (No two vowels can touch. No two consonants can touch!) (17 points)
- PARASITE > _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ > _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ > PREADOPT (25 points)
