#837 is practically a road map. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png) A quote by Cicero, a dead Roman statesman? That has something to do with hamsters and snow leopards, but not giraffes or bearded vultures? @joey, ՏՇԾԵԵʅՏɧ_LԹՏՏʅҼ, spartan7886, little help?

Perhaps it would help if I inform you that the bison, the common dentex, the Himalayan niviventer, and the green iguana all make the list.
(It would be less helpful to observe that the buffalo or Himalayan White-bellied Rat are included.)

The jujube would be even closer than the giraffe, without earning inclusion by strict criteria.
ETA: Actually, that's out of date. Since 2011, it's been off the list altogether. Prior to that, it was so close. And the inclusion rule is time-sensitive. So not even a Turing machine could theoretically solve this. Here I thought it was just me. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

Ironically, this is absolutely wrong. It doesn't matter if I call the Lammergeyer a Bearded Vulture, but it would matter - crucially - if I referred to it another way.

(It would be less helpful to observe that the buffalo or Himalayan White-bellied Rat are included.) You included "jujube", which is a completely arbitrary object. So I can only conclude that the fact that these are animals is irrelevant. That leaves the actual words being used, but those aren't time-sensitive, they have nothing to do with a Roman quote. That leaves some quirk of how the data is presented. Or possibly some unique feature of how the sentences are presented. But that could be quite literally countless things. So I'll let others take it away. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/huh.gif)

A latin quote. Strictly, two latin quotes.

Lammergeyer has a spelling mistake in it. Was that deliberate? Inclusion in some dictionary? In some encyclopedia? "Jujubes" wasn't technically a word until 2011, and then after that "almost" became a word?

Lammergeier is the more correct term for the 'lamb-hawk', but Lammergeyer is used as well. That's not relevant to the answer.
The jujube couldn't ever actually be on this list, because it's a plant (by convention, plants can't be on this list). However, from around 1882 to 2011, it was as close as one could get to being on this list without technically making it; then, in 2011, a change was introduced, after which it could no longer be mistaken for a member of the group.

So... something to do with the taxonomic names. Repetition? The wren has "troglodyte" in there a few times. And taxonomic classifications change. "Ziziphus mauritiana" for jujube plants. I didn't even know there was a jujube plant. Google translate chokes on "Ziziphus mauritiana". If it's Latin, it don't know it. ... ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/huh.gif)

Ziziphus is actually adapted from the Farsi (I think) zizfum, meaning 'lotus.'
Repetition is indeed the point though.
Pending review by the Cat Classification Task Force, the Snow Leopard is known as Uncia uncia in taxonomic circles (for example, Wilson & Reeder's "Mammal Species of the World"). The common magpie is Pica pica; the Himalayan White-Bellied Rat Niviventer niviventer; and so on.
The jujube plant was, from 1882 to 2011, known primarily as Ziziphus zizyphus. This was a technical work around of an obscure prohibition on tautonyms in botanical classification: Z. jujuba, the preferred term today, avoids this problem.
The giraffe, Giraffa camelopardi, has two obviously different generic and specific taxa - but they mean the same thing, which is why they're closer than, say, Gypaetus barbatus, the Lammergeyer.

Considering you're talking to a guy who didn't realize "jujube" referred to anything but a gumdrop 45 minutes ago, I trust you'll understand why I didn't quite connect the dots all the way to the deprecated taxonomic name for a plant. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/tongue2.png)

You got 1 and 22, SL. "Studio" is already used, so it can't be #4. ETA: Actually, your answer for 1 is the answer for 4. ETA: I'm a bit surprised a lover of the Calgary Stampede didn't get 17. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png)

I don't know how to do the spoiler alert but #14 starts with an "L". If you click on the "Spoiler" button when you reply, it will put in a spoiler. At this point we're far enough away from the problem statement that you can just post your answers out in the open.
