Yesterday turned in to a spend. DH and I decided that instead of getting pizza, he and I would go out to dinner. Since our route took us by the pet store, we stopped and got dog treats (I have no idea how we managed it, but we pretty much ran out of all dog treats all at once). That was a needed expenditure, but still not normally made on a Tuesday night. After dinner, we stopped by Cold Stone and shared a small treat. Today will be a controlled spend. DH is still recovering from the con and doesn't feel like cooking, so we'll get the take n bake tonight. We have to go by his mom's so she can shower and we'll pick up the pizza on the way home.
mini-rant I really, really wish DH would learn to communicate some things to me. When I was at his mom's last week, I picked up a bill from the surgeon. She wanted to know if that meant she had a new appt scheduled with him. I said no, we were waiting to here from them. I mentioned it to DH last night who said "Oh, we should be calling and scheduling surgery. That last test we got wasn't one that could have happened after scheduling, just needed to happen before surgery." So you mean we could have gotten this surgery scheduled a few weeks ago? Ugh. So I will call the surgeon's office today and see about getting surgery scheduled and find out what the out of pocket costs are going to be. The timing is just bad because of all the family visits and vacations we have scheduled the end of this month and throughout September.

Today is a CS- I need to get some money for the talent show tonight and put gas in the car- which was already budgeted.

Update- 6 NS, 1CS, 7/NEO
Vent- DH is driving me batty. I've been asking him about a 40th Anniversary Party for his parents for over a year. (It was back in March.) HE & SIL talked to their parents back in February and decided to do something this summer. In late June nothing was planned so I asked again, and he talked to his mom and dad and they decided to wait until fall. So fast forward to the weekend his parents leave on a 2 week trip and DH & SIL decide that they need to have the party the weekend of 8/26. (This was after a discussion with me about how busy our September weekends already were.) And they can't get invites out until they talk to his parents and confirm that date is good for them. Unlike my family his doesn't check-in on trips, in fact they didn't even call us to let us know they were home. So yesterday we find out they are home and DH confirms it is a good weekend. Then he says he & SIL need to get together to send out the invites, which just confused the heck out me. They decided to mail invites for an event less than 3 weeks out. Then I'm looking at the guest list and it is about 50 people max (I know that my family won't be there as there is a birthday party that is already scheduled for that day.) So we are down to about 40. I asked if he ran the list by his parents and he said no. I'm guessing that there are more people that should be invited, but I really don't want to take this over. I agreed to the cooking and really that is all I want to do but at the same time I feel guilty not jumping in and trying to make sure everything is done right. Plus my parents 40th was a huge production, rented hall, DJ, slideshow, nice outfits. I think I'm going to have a hard time convining DH not to wear jean shorts for the party.

dakota- You are a better woman than I- for my grandparents' and ex-hubby's parents' 50ths we put a lot more time than that in. In fact, we spent a year working on my grandparents 50th. It's wonder my tongue didn't turn black and fall out between covering for my mom and the lies I told on my own trying to get stuff done. We took about 3 months planning the one for my ex-hubby's parents'- which may have actually been a 60th. We had just found out his dad's MS was getting worse. Either way- I don't blame you!

dakota - Hugs. How frustrating.
mizbear and moneysquirrel - Thanks.
So, Grandma is not doing well. The doctor's are thinking only days left (according to my brother via my dad via my uncle or maybe it is the other way around, but my brother was the one that told me). She probably could have overcome the heart attack, but she has pnemonia and it isn't doing well. I don't feel like I have to see her one last time, but if my boss was here at the office I would probably be making the trip up there right now since it is "only" 5 hrs (closest relative to DH and myself). The drama is that my brother doesn't feel like my mom is forthcoming enough and that she is very evasive. I don't know. I seem to get the drift from mom pretty well. So, maybe I am better at reading between the lines or maybe it is girl speak. Plus my Aunt (by marriage) is being very dramatic on facebook or she was over the weekend when Grandma actually was doing well. I had a meeting this morning. I was over 10 minutes late because I underestimated how long it would take to get there. The meeting was close to an hour, plus travel time I was out of the office for 3 hrs. Yesterday, I went in the field for 6 hrs and ended up not getting the project done I NEEDED us to get done. So, today I am playing catch up. I have to make some phone calls and after getting off the phone with my brother I just want to cry. So, I guess I'll return the calls after lunch. The good news is that I wrapped up a couple projects that needed to get done. The bad news is I have about 4 more to get done in the next half a week.

muttelyn- hugs. I can't imagine how hard it is to be so far away when family is sick. Can you call the hospital and speak directly to the charge nurse? They can give you the best assessment without emotional involvement. Most hospitals now require you to give a password or prove you know the patient but it can be a great way to keep tabs on her condition.
Oh wow, all 3 of my dogs are sleeping quietly. Let's see how long this lasts while I finish updating my blog and work on customer service. Wednesday is my catch up day because there are no meetings, no 5 hour shows to produce and no personal appointments. I love Wednesdays.

muttley - hugs - sorry about your grandmother
I'm just recovering from a nasty reaction to an antibiotic - they had to take me off the one and switch - after 24 hours off all - to a new one. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease!
Doing well on CS/NS and NEO this month - I'm really just counting down days till Vegas - one week from tomorrow!

Job Rant
Th most frustrating thing about this economy is that so much of it is out of our hands!
My mom lost her job in May, in part because she was a higher earner. Well duh. She has a BS in business and 30 years experience. They kept two high school graduates instead because they could pay them less.
And now my dad has lost in job (effective Friday) because the job he's project managed for the past 5 years is wrapping up and they have NO other projects.
So it's frustrating and sad and makes me worry because my parents are in their mid-50s, made good income and now have to cut back until they have income again at a time when they should be enjoying the fruits of their labor after putting in YEARS to earn where they are.
Especially my Dad who just made associate, who has been through 3 mergers and always found a place where to land.
I talked to reeneejune about this earlier and I know my parents will survive by selling assets, cutting back and living off their savings but I just hate that they're in the position where they have to do that.
Trying to make this positive.... it gives me so much motivation to take my business to the next level and increase my income and savings.

I have some good news- I got second place in my talent show tonight! UNfortunately I was then runover by a woman with a stroller (we have laws against cell phones and driving cars, but what about a cell phone, ice cream and a stroller- DUH) I fell in my boots that I wore for the competition. I didn't think I did much there, but I just go tup in between posts. I have to go to the doc tomorrow now- it's swelled bruised and keeps popping from side to side- I have a feeling I broke it again... On the other hand I got second place

Update: 6 NS days and 1CS day Start -- Sorry to hear about the job situations of your parents. I also have noticed this trend. In my area experienced teachers' contracts have not been renewed. Many suspect that the reason is that the powers that be can hire a younger teacher (or two) without as much experience for a lot less money. As one of the older faculty members, I never count on the next school year until I sign the contract in the spring. At least by the time this school year is over, I will be at the age that I qualify for SS if it comes to that. I hope to teach for several additional years but I have to face the reality that they could hire a younger less experienced teacher for less money. azmom -- How was the kids' first day?

azmom: With your heat I would at least give the kitty water. If you feed it it may become yours so if no neighbors claim it as theirs go ahead. You may want to take it to a vet just to have it checked out. I am a firm believer of kids being around animals but then again respect those that choose not to have animals. I think having animals and having the kids help with them and play with them teaches them many things. Some cats also just go adopt a few houses. My father has a cat that stays in their barn over the winter then leaves for the summer (they figure snow birds take care of the cat when he disappears) Reenee: I know it is a while but I have been there. I would suck it up, deal with it and then when you leave send a letter to cooperate and the district manager and store manager about your opinions on the company and their issues. Now this is assuming you don't want to every work there again. ;D Muttley: Hope DGM is doing better. money: DS#1 finished the second book in the series and asked if I requested the third one from the library Took puppy to training again. The trainer LOVES him and may let me continue after our time is up even if I can't afford to pay her. She uses him to show the other puppies/owners how it should be done. He did great. He even did pretty good with DS#2's social worker that came over today (normaly biannual visit) I had my DSIS's dog to kind of show him how it works. Seriously he is a great dog. Yeah he has fears but I can't say enough about how quickly he learns and how far he has come. The trainer is having problems with one woman who has a Yorkie and is just not listening to the trainer. The woman also brings her kids and the kids walk the dog a lot. So after training the trainer, myself and one other gal who has been there one week short of me brain stormed. I gave the suggestion to use the kid instead of mom since mom won't listen. Later.

Although new teachers sometimes have a lot to offer- I often did better with seasoned teachers. Not always- we always had at least one every year who wrote you off based on your name, race, where you were from, who your parents were, etc. I always got at least 2 who immediately wrote me off because I lived in one of the apartment complexes, had no "name", etc. However- seasoned teachers were the ones who fought for me to get classes I needed/wanted, and get the kids to stop bullying me. My first year 2nd grade teacher figured out I needed

startsmart - Sorry about your parent's job situation.
Nothing really new on my Grandma. My brother drove out and back yesterday. I talked to him on his drive home. He said Grandma was frail, her oxygen levels even on oxygen were only 90% saturation. She was pretty lucid but then sometimes she would start naming people who have visited her who have been dead for 20 years. Then they gave her morphine and she was pretty well out of it at that point. My mom and dad drove out yesterday. My dad has a conference Houston, Tx today so he drove from my Grandma's town to KC (2.5 hrs away ... well probably 2 to the airport since dad left at 4am) to fly from there. I don't know when he is flying back. My mom is momentarily without a car, but it is less than a mile from the hotel to the hospital and my uncle has about a half dozen cars and said he would loan her one. My sister and her family have been on vacation out west and they are talking about stopping by on the way home, but mom said in her email that they got the last room at the hotel because construction workers are staying there....this is kind of a big deal since there isn't another hotel for 30 miles (really small town and very very rural area). DH and I were talking about going up after my meeting on Friday, but I have no idea now.

hey ladies, just checking in to say hi. Muttley - hugs to you. Grandparents are truly special. I can't imagine how hard that must be. start - if your parents are anything like you, they are very smart and very resourceful. wishing them the best of luck moving forward. that really sucks though. Nothing particularly exciting on my end. Still enjoying the new car, blue is still travelling a lot (grrr), and still planning and contemplating when is the best time to start our family. Pool is still in limbo, but it looks like we'll have to sell the pump on ebay or Amazon or something, as we're past the return date. Boo to that. Garden is growing like crazy and I have cucumbers coming out of my ears. Might donate some to work, even though I don't eat lunch here. Better than wasting them! I can only eat so much cucumber! Blue sent me this article with a note saying "Go you!" money.cnn.com/2011/08/10/pf/emergency_fund/index.htm?hpt=hp_t2Really proud we have an EF, however small. Makes me wonder how those people who don't have one feel safe starting families and all that. I want to have a baby fund separate from the EF for baby EF type things. Just to be safe. Perhaps I'm overplanning and we should just go for it... lol. Okay, back to work. Been crazy busy all summer.

7 NS, 1 CS, 8 NEO
Muttley- Hugs
Start- My mom was laid off back in 2001 (55 at the time) from the place she had worked for over 30 years. She went back to her roots (Social work) for a while and then became a volunteer coordinator. Now she is starting to cut back her hours and experiment with retirement. Dad was laid off back in 2005 and he retired (63 at the time he was a high school counselor and had switched districts, so was low man on the totem pole), but worked part time for United Way (decided to give that up this year, it required too many early mornings), referees high school soccer and works for part time for the census bureau.
MizBear- Hope your ankle is okay.
New vent on the anniversary party- DH & his sister decided not to ask for RSVPs. Luckily the guest list is only 40 in town people, so I guess that is what we'll plan on. DH & I had a long discussion last night about planning this. He thinks it is going to magically come together. I already know the DSIL will be of little to no use in the process. So I told him we need to decide on a menu and divvy up the responsibility between us & his sister. (His sister has already offered to pick up the chips & dip.) He was thinking that turkey, brisket, black beans and chips & dip and a cake was an appropriate menu. (No rolls, no condiments, no side dishes) Ugghhhh. So tonight he and I are going to put down on paper all of the little things that need to be thought about then he can run with it hopefully.

dakota- For your own sanity- may I suggest finger foods or cold cuts so that if/when you end up doing all this, it's quick and simple for you. I served sliced roast beef, turkey, ham, pasta salad, potato salad, etc at my first 2 weddings. I went to work after the 3rd one. I know the menu reads kind of like Ray Stevens' Shriner's Convention... but it works...
DGM has pneumonia! Aye yi yi....
red- If my parents had waited to have the money to have me- I still wouldnt be here. My father walked up to me one day and said "Guess what, we just got done paying off all the hospital bills- they can't repo you now. Guess we're stuck with you." Sick SOB.

Mizbear- We are basically doing finger foods. We are just roasting the turkey and brisket ourselves and slicing them up. The brisket will go in a crockpot and the turkey will be on a platter. It is saving us money as we have both of these in the freezer already. Then it is black beans (MIL is a vegetarian and she loves my black beans) rolls, condiments, and chips & dip at the moment. I will be pushing to have a salad (pasta sounds like a good idea) and veggie tray since his mom is vegetarian. It doesn't have to be an elaborate spread, just some with some options for people. My husband doesn't understand that not everyone likes to eat 3 helpings of meat for a meal. When we go to places with a buffet he takes NO veggies only starches and meats. It is something he is working on as mini-D will be starting to notice those things.

as predicted I was not able to sleep last night.. I ended up eating something at 2am when my stomach wouldn't settle and reading a business book because my brain wouldn't shut up.
Of course that made digging into customer service and emails early this morning a PITA

4 NSD! Yesterday I had a planning meeting from 6-11 p.m. at night and I did not spend a dime. Not entirely by choice but a NSD none the less. We met at a Cafe and I was late because I had to drop DS off at football practice. When I arrived everyone already had their meals (you order and pay up front-no servers) when I sat down we immediately went into my stuff and then it just kept going and going around the table and then we left and went to another gals house to finish up. We were planning the next four month of my MOMs group. Being on the actual leadership team is a whole new experience. So many details and differing views and ideas and side talk to work around All in all it was a great looong night and now we are set for the entire first semester! Cat: Thanks for all of the suggestions and to Mrs Lynch for the e-mail. SS: HUGS Dakota: Oh My! I know your pain. We host Thanksgiving and Christmas and I experience similar setbacks! HUGS Muttleyn: Yes they are getting so big. That in the blink of a eye saying is so true! I put a couple of the facebook pics on my blog. I Money: Thank you so much for asking about the first day of school. It was pretty uneventful and that saddens me a bit. I didn't need to walk anyone to their class. I just drove up and they jumped out and that was that! We had a back to school breakfast and took pictures and had a special after school snack. It all seemed so normal. I did LOVE when I picked them up from school, they were so excited to see each other and compare and discuss the day WITH EACH OTHER! Anyone with multiple kids can appreciate the special moments that happen between sibling, especially when there is so much bickering that goes on usually. The jury is still out on DS teacher. He didn't get the teacher we requested and I don't know anything about the teacher he has now except she taught 1st grade last year at the same school and has a few of the same kids she had last year. She has actually been a teacher for five years. DD teacher is also the student council Teacher Coordinator and came highly recommended. Hopefully, she will help DD to expand her leadership qualities. Curriculum night is on the 23rd and I look forward to that night every year. It gives me a better idea of their teaching styles (which I respect all the differences) and it gives me an idea of what to expect for the school year. I really wish they used meet the teacher night to go over the curriculum 1.) it would eliminate having to give up two nights and 2.) the only purpose meet the teacher served was finding out where the kids class room was and saying hi to their teacher. Maybe I am jaded because my kids are older now but it was a wasteful night. I could see the benefit for kindergarten but they already hold their own Meet the Teacher Day. Late night and early morning w/PMS equals a long tired painful day!!

Yesterday was the controlled spend it was supposed to be. I was on track for today to be an NSD, but no, the chicken pox virus decided to reactivate in my system, so I've got an outbreak. I'll be heading to the pharmacy shortly to pick up my meds. That means a copay. I'll be staying home tomorrow for some extra rest.

Kids had a blast at the zoo but man was it crowded. Not really sure why. Swimming is going very well and I expect him to graduate to level 3 this time. Not sure if I will be able to continue swimming during the school year with karate but we will see. Have DNiece over night. Since DS#1 was at her house last night I am hoping they will go to sleep early.
Now I need to figure out a quick easy dinner as I didn't thaw anything before we went to the zoo. It may be noodles or Mac N Cheese.

I just had a horrible thought- if the ankle is broke again- I will be in the boot longer this time... My 5K is in November! Ths will be the 4th time... I know I did more than just twist it because something popped in it and I can't move 4 toes.

Mizbear, it might be a tendon/ligament... I was doing a cartwheel on the porch and whacked my foot against the window a/c unit, I could have sworn it was broken (hugely swollen & couldn't move my toes) but I just tore a few ligaments. Hopefully it's nothing serious.
8 NSD/CSD, 3 EOD... I think I'm definitely going to go over on EOD this month. I have a lunch date with my 39 weeks pregnant GF next week and my boss is coming back... he likes to go to lunch. I am starting to think I'm just going to have to cut the grocery budget that much more and keep $20 a week or so for lunches out. At least Kroger sent me some coupons this week ;D
Doing OK on total monthly spending. DH is on break until the last week of August, so our fuel bill is cut in half, plus he's working... though we are filling up the propane tank tomorrow (500 gallons at $2.19... ugh). 2 steps forward, 1 back, I guess.

Yesterday was a spend. Target had tennis shoes buy one get one 50% off. So I picked up 2 pairs for mini-D, as his feet grow really fast.
I may have to leave work early today as he was really whiny and clingy this AM. He said he was sick and didn't want to go to school. We have been going back and forth all week as to whether or not he is actually coming down with something or not. I swear I'm taking his temp like 3 or 4 times a day because he feels hot, but isn't registering a fever. The teacher this AM said there is something going around, so we'll see. Half the time he is running around like a normal 3 year old, the other half he is curling up in my lap to be cuddled.

dakota - Ugh. I hope he doesn't have anything.
THanks guys for all the hugs. I am leaving work here in 20 minutes and we are headed up to see my Grandma. My mom made hotel reservations and just made them through Wednesday just in case. We actually already have reservations for Friday and Saturday night of next week for the party. Grandma is still talking about her party although my uncle said she is really weak this morning, but overall doing well.

Stand back. I have a budget, and I know how to use it.

I am in an ortho boot for at least a week, and then will move to an air cast- they don't think it's broke. The doctor thinks the popping I heard was me dislocating a tendon or ligament.
