Update: Kristin11: 3/28/11 $13,074.65 (12/31/09 $16,567.73 NEU8)
1. Domestications - $0 – No Change 2. Kohls - $224.78 – ($112.00) Decrease 3. Target Visa - $4,252.94 – ($54.87) Decrease 4. Discover - $1,478.46 – $36.04 Increase 5. Disney Visa - $1,279.53 – $177.10 Increase 6. Shell Fuel Card - $0 – No Change 7. Macys - $0 – No Change 8. Sisters Loan - $480.00 – No Change 9. Bethpage FCU - $5,358.94 – ($163.12) Decrease
Total change for the past month was ($116.85) Decrease.
Still managed to go down a little somehow even though it has been a horrible month and things haven’t gone as planned. There was an emergency vet visit that wiped out my emergency fund as well as forced me to put some money on a credit card that I wasn’t happy about but I had no other option. So now I am in rebuilding mode. I am hoping for at least a $300 decrease next month which will get me under $13,000. I am still waiting to hear on that balance transfer. I put another call into them today and was told that it was successful and that I should see it reflected on my credit cards by the weekend. I am not holding my breath on that one though and will wait and see what happens come this weekend. If the transfer went through I think that I am going to keep the new credit card as non racing for now and put it into my second race with my loan from my parents and car loan in the future. If it does go through that would bring my total down drastically for next month – probably under $10,000 but it would bring my non racing total up to about $23,000. I am going to keep my eyes open for another 0% transfer offer because my Discover card also has a very high interest rate that I would love to get rid of even if its only for a year or so. I am still on track to have Kohls and one of my non racing cards paid off in July (4 more payments on each) and I think my plan is to not snowball the entire $135 into another payment but to take some aside for day to day expenses. If I do get the balance transfer I will update again next week and try to work out a new payment schedule and what I can pay to each card. I hope it goes through this time!

Looks like everyone is doing great on their debt reduction journeys. I'm looking forward to posting later this week after I make my April payments. I'm taking $1,850 of our tax return and applying that to our camp mortgage. I was hoping to put more on that loan, however, my dh has only been getting one paycheck per month for the last 3 months and is suppose to get two. That's what happens when you are self employed I guess.
However, we are still on track to pay off the camp by December. That is when our debt reduction will really take off!!! I started posting on WIR last January and at that point, we still owed about $25k on that loan and I knew we were looking at 2 years to pay it off. However, I will be dancing a victory dance when we do!! Once we do, it is on to the next mortgage, but we will definitely be able to pack more of a punch when we roll in what we were already paying for the camp onto that mortgage. Unfortunately, it will still take us 22 months to pay the next mortgage off once the camp is paid off, but if I did it once, I can do it again.
Another goal is to get under 100k in debt which we have set a goal to do by 09/12. I have to keep setting up smaller goals as our debts would be overwhelming otherwise.
Hang in there everyone. I will be posting again by the end of the week or early next week at the latest.

To all you ladies & gents who are just starting out: YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!
I have to say that March has been a tough month for me for some reason, however, warmer weather is coming and I think that will help. Seems in March I have nothing else to focus on but my debt. I need to get outside more!!!

And I've got my peas planted, my tomato seedlings are in my front window (and my kitties are constantly trying to lie down on the lid, I tried a smear of chili oil, helped deter them a *little*, but they're brats!), I've got plans for my green beans and my basil and rosemary are shooting up... it's going to be a green summer with lots of fresh veggies!

I owe an update, and will try to do one tonight to make the end-of-March cutoff. I'm very close to being back to my starting total, but that's not much help since we're soon going to be buying some more stuff for the home remodel.
As it stands now, the structure is done (added a new kitchen off the back and a second story on top of the lower side of our split-level), DH is nearly done with the electrical in the new kitchen, and then we can get that inspected, put in the plumbing, get that inspected, put the insulation back in and tack it in permanently, get that inspected, and then put up drywall. We've decided to hire an out-of-work friend to do the drywall since it'll save us a lot of time and will give him some much-needed (and earned, if you've ever hung dry wall--ugh) money. Then we'll probably switch over to doing the electrical, insulation, and drywall (the last with the friend's help again) for the new master bedroom before going back to finish the kitchen. DH still has to frame out the closet and bathroom portions, but that will only take him part of a day. It's doing the electrical and plumbing that takes time. And every.step.of.the.way there is an inspection.
We did get a sizable tax refund, but only $900 more than what I need to pay our township, county, and real-estate taxes for the year. DH needed to hire his electrician friend to move our whole panel box out of the laundry room (no longer code) and into our new basement. Guess what that cost? $895. So the tax $ won't be going toward debt payment, but at least it kept us from racking up more.
We're taking a FL vacation during DS1's spring break, and that will suck up my snowball for April, but I have made some payments that will be reflected in my coming-soon update, and I'll hope to hit the ground running in May. Maybe some freelance work will come through.
Happy racing, everyone!

Lark: Maybe that is what I need to do, start planing some things!! By the way things look and another dreaded snow storm on the way, we won't be planting outside until the 4th of July!! LOL!!!
Thriftymom!! You have so much on your plate. How do you track it all?!? Sounds like you are doing great!! The remodel sounds like it is going well and it sounds like you are keeping on top of your finances. Who can ask for anything more?
Looking forward to posting my progress! I may do that today, even though the checks won't be mailed until tomorrow!!! Is that cheating?? Everything is paid by the 1st, I just don't want to miss being part of the update.

Okay, not to confuse things, but this is a table showing what I old LAST month, what I now owe and the difference. I generally just show the start and current, but I thought, especially given that I really paid a lot this month, that I would show it out. No trouble seeing how I spent a good portion of my tax refund. I wish I could have put it all to the debt!!!! Wudnit, there are definitely times that I feel like I'm gonna lose it, but I've gained a lot of perspective over the last few years from various life experiences. So what if my fridge has been in the dining room for two months? Or if my ceiling beams on the whole first floor of the house have been exposed since last summer? We just take it a day at a time, focusing on the fact that some day it will be done and we will finish paying it off. The boys think it's so cool that we're making changes to the house (they're 3.5yrs and 6yrs old), and we only wish they were old enough to be put to work! DH has been using his own CC for purchases at Home Depot and Lowes, so that adds to our debt total, too, though I'm not racing it. But luckily he will finish paying off his truck at the end of May, and then he will have another $300/mo to throw at his CC. Like my racing debts, his balance will also fluctuate till the buying part of the project is done, but at least he will paying it down as hard as possible while that is going on. We are so looking forward to vacation, though. It will be nice to be in my ILs' house in FL, where nothing is under construction and the housework is not mine to do! ;D

rrrpt and wudnit, if all goes well (why not?) I will be posting my pictures, and since I'm home (not on a contract) and I'm settled into my work and not doing nutty hours anymore and I'm in a better place with my health... yes! I will be planting like a maniac in about... eh, 3-4 weeks, and I'm going to have a wild and green a delightfully aromatic garden, which I plan to show OFF! ;D
Although... I need a better camera, I had a great one on my old phone, the one on this phone is just horrid!

Hello ladies and gents - this isn't going to be an update, but I thought I needed to let everyone know I hadn't disappeared. DH had scheduled surgery on 3/1. We saved cash for it, but still got a 16k bill, that scared the cr*p out of me! Turns out the insurance company hadn't gotten the doctor's claims yet, and the hospital decided to bill us directly for the full amount. There was a stressful few days, with a flurry of phone calls between the doctor, insurance, and the hospital. The bill should be quite manageable once everything is finalized, but I won't be fully relaxed until I get to take all of the paperwork out of my purse (instead of carrying it around every day, just in case someone calls about it)! DH is back up and around, and has been back to work for several weeks now... but I'm still fielding phone calls! Also, we've decided to buy a house. In less than two full weeks, we got pre-approved for a mortgage, got a real estate agent, found a house, put in a bid, had the bid accepted, signed papers, and got inspections done. Can you tell it's been a crazy few weeks? It is a HUD house in a neighborhood of single family residences, and we're paying 2/3rds of what it sold for 3 years ago. I'm waiting to hear back from one bank that tentatively offered us a better rate (and no PMI!) than the place where we were pre-approved, and once that comes back, the next steps can be taken. So, by mid-May, I think we'll be in OUR house. I have also gotten several new projects at work, so I've been swamped in general. I haven't gone anywhere, and our savings are still on track... something tells me it'll be a few months before everything settles out though. I'll definitely try to put up my numbers by early next week at the latest. Happy spring!

I completely forgot once I got home last night that I had planned to post an update here. Since I don't have my file at work that has the table in it and I'm afraid I'll forget again tonight, here's just the abbreviated update so you can include it in the SOTU: thriftymom[2] 3/31/2011 $19293.61 (3/25/10, $18502.12 NEU 160; NPT ??)In other news, we got a letter from the IRS that at first I thought in panic would tell us we'd been randomly selected for an audit. It wasn't that, though. Whew. Instead it said that we owed more taxes for 2009 because we'd claimed more than was allowable in child care credits. I recall that the day our tax preparer filed for us he accidentally listed $3000 per child (we have two kids), and when I got home I noticed the error and called him back. I had already had $3000 taken out during the year for an FSA, so he should've only claimed $1500/child for us. He submitted an updated tax filing, but when he checked yesterday his electronic records didn't show that as going through. So we do indeed owe the US Treasury the extra $600 plus $23 in penalties. He offered to pay the penalty amount since it was his mistake, but he's a family friend and I don't need the $23 that badly. So there goes another chunk of our tax refund, and now I'll need to take some $ our of our snowball when the big real-estate tax bill comes due in the fall. Could be worse, I guess. We could be getting audited. Happy racing, my friends, from cold and rainy Philadelphia!

Update Munjoyhill 3/31/11 $144,683.68 (6/19/09 $155,240.30) NE629, NEU301 Debt | Starting Amt | 3/31/2011 | Difference | HELOC | $30,340.30 | $20,593.77 | $9,746.53 | Mortgage | $125,000.00 | $124,253.18 | $746.82 | Totals | $155,340.30 | $144,683.68 | $10,656.62 |
Not a huge update, but my mortgage payment goes through in two days, so that'll go down some. I am just paying the minimum on my HELOC, and putting anything extra into savings, just in case anything happens on the job front.

Lark: I am really struggling with this LOOOONG winter (we are expecting another storm for tomorrow), I cannot wait to see garden photos!! Just hearing about your garden gives me the feeling of spring which I so desperately need!!! I loved the pictures from last year!!!! I will look forward to them.
Thrifymom: I can so relate to what you are going through, we did a MAJOR house renovation YEARS ago (I'm old! LOL), we actually took the room off our ranch and went a story up and ended up with a colonial. It was a MAJOR project and my DH did all the major work himself. He had help with the smaller things from family and friends. It was an amazing project. I kept a journal for awhile and it is fun to read through it now with notes like "put the tree up in the unfinished dining room amids the piles of flooring." "Put the tree up in the unfinished entryway." Our kids were amazing through the whole process. The tree, of course, referring to our Christmas tree. It was interesting. People kept asking how I could do it, but I remember it didn't bother me, it was what it was and I knew it would be great when we were finished. I guess that is also why I jumped when we found a camp that was falling into the pond it was on. We just had to rescue it. We now have enjoyed 8 wonderful summers there with a lot of work and a lot of fun and a lot of family times that I wouldn't trade for anything. It is our camp mortgage that I'm currently trying to pay off (although I'm racing ALL our debt). Hopeing to have it paid off no later than December. Then it will really be our's.

I want to say, although I jumped the gun and posted yesterday, that my updates are official!!!! The payments are in the mail!!!!! I AM going to conquer this debt. I am going to free up our cashflow and I'm going to stop giving our money to banks in the form of interest!! I'm sooooooo done!!!! I am proud to say, that we had one wedding in September 09 and then another in August 10 for our two daughters and we managed to get through both weddings with no new debt. I still don't know how we did it, but both were beautiful weddings and the days were gorgeous and memorable. Glad to say, I have no children being married this summer. I need a break from wedding planning and, mostly, I need a break from wedding expenses!!!!
