Thanks FFBC and El! I still don't know what is going on with the new rental. Depending on what happens, I may be able to pay more towards the rental reno loan.

indebtyogini- What browser are you using? Maybe try a different one?
We got our other tax refund last week, and this week I get a bonus from work. I'll be making some good progress on my non-racing debt. Woo hoo!

Thank you Yogini! I am AMAZED that it totals that much! Wow! But I think 9K was from an insurance payout from the Basement Flooding Disaster of 2008 though.
ETA: Don't worry, I have no plans to start a fifth race LOL!

My RE lawyer called today. She has finally spoken with the seller's RE lawyer. Although there are issues, and we may have to redo all the paperwork, I am *cautiously optimistic* that the purchase will go through. It will certainly be delayed though. Fingers crossed!

Question
This is our remaining (non-racing) debt. Hopefully the new rental purchase will go through and we will add a 41K loan.
* 2,170 @ 2.75%, 155/mo, 14 months left (new boiler) * 9,773 @ 4.3%, 190/mo, 61 months left (rental reno loan) * 29,968 @ 4.0%, 586/mo, 58 months left (rental mortgage)
I had hoped to pay off the 9.7K reno loan, but it didn't happen. We were too much in the red, especially on our rental account. So our monthly payments are still higher than I had hoped they would be.
I still have 1K to allocate.
I want to pay down the 2170 loan, which would mean we'd pay it off in eight months and free up 155/mo. DH thinks I'm insane to pay off a 2.75% loan. I tell him it's not about the interest, it's about the monthly payments. He also doesn't like that our credit union wouldn't see the paydown, since that boiler loan is held by another bank (the gas company's bank. Our CU wasn't yet offering "green loans".)
DH says it's a gov't subsidized loan. He fears that if we pay it off early it will trigger an "alarm bell" and we'll get audited. We have nothing to hide but obviously we do NOT want the aggravation. Dealing with the French administration is EXTREMELY stressful for me (and I'd be the one dealing with it.)
I can't decide whether DH is being wise, or completely paranoid. I wouldn't waltz in and pay it all off and break into song. I'd sent a 1K check in by snail mail so we could pay it off sooner and lose that 155/mo payment by the end of the year. I'm thinking these people couldn't care less, but who knows?!
Any thoughts?

DH - I think you should pay off the $2,170 loan. Yes the math doesn't make sense as you're not paying a lot of interest, but I definitely hear ya about the monthly payments. Plus how amazing will it feel to have that one done and over with, especially after having a recent win on here! Go with your gut - you have good instincts about these things.
Maybe to appease your DH, can you just add a bit to your monthly payments over the next few months? Instead of sending in a $1K cheque, add $250. I don't think alarm bells will go off anyway, but maybe this will satisfy his nerves...

Unfortunately, you can't do it that way, otherwise it would be a great idea. The minimum pre-payment has to be 3X the monthly payment (ie 3X155). I think he's being paranoid but I also think if Gd forbid we got a tax audit within the next three years (the French look-back period), either he or I or both of us would totally blame me.

UPDATE
ldawngirl: 3/10/11 | $9,338 (1/4/10 | $27,993 | IU10)
$18,655 (66%) paid off
Another PL payment.
I dropped off my DF's bankruptcy payment today, which means only two more months to go! What has me nervous is if he has earned too much money over the nine months, which means he'll be in bankruptcy for longer (21 months in total). His earning average so far is a bit over, but there's a small cushion if we go over the limit that he falls into right now. But to make sure we're okay, he's been taking days off and he's booked a week off later this month, so that should drive down his March pay and hopefully he can do the same in April.
The issue is that he is accepting shifts when he gets called, so it's becoming a big problem around our household - I get mad as it seems like he's not taking this seriously and doesn't recognize how important this is - he really needs to make almost nothing to ensure this is done and over with in two months. I handle our finances, so while he gets that it's tight and this needs to be done, he doesn't really get it get it. I know he doesn't want to piss off people at work, but in the end, I said 6 months or a year from now, who is really going to remember that he took off all this time? His first cheque in March was low, but he has two more this month, so here's hoping they're low too! (So strange to be wishing for little cheques!).
In other news, I'm getting a tax refund of about $900 and we're going to use that for the wedding as there are a few things we need to pay for right now.

Well you mentioned that there's no reason to fear an audit as everything is fine. So other than the annoyance, it's not a big deal. I say go for it. The chances of being audited are slim to none, and saving you the $155/month and the stress will be worth it!

I'm going to wait for a little while to see what happens with the next rental. You raised a good point though! It might be better to just send in the minimum prepayment (3 x 155 = 465). That would still get me from 14 months to 11. 11 is not as good as 8, but it's better than 14! And I'd think that a prepayment of 465 couldn't set off any "alarm bells". (But again, who knows?!)
Great update idawn! I can totally understand that you want this over with ASAP. But it's hard to get upset at DH for accepting work, especially if they like him enough to offer it to him. You're between a rock and a hard place. I know you want this bankruptcy over ASAP, but at the same time, remember that your DH is building his future career.
I hope the numbers work out for you!

Oh I am just gutted. I lost my business school job. They are closing the Paris campus at the end of this school year (which is in three weeks for me). They told all the teachers and students today, it was total pandemonium, kids screaming, sobbing, crying. My mentor / head of dept only found out yesterday and he was practically in tears too. All the other heads of dept cancelled their classes today except mine, so we were the only teachers there today. I LOVE that job. We teachers are welcome to apply to the two other campuses ... in the north of France, or in the south of France. My boss told me if and when he finds something else, he'll try to bring me with him. I know it's just a job (ie not Japan) but I am so sad. The worst is for my poor, devastated, shafted students. What a carpy thing to do to all of us. They are going to keep the Paris campus only for continuing executive training. ETA: I have already started applying to other schools. But I want my students, and my boss.

Aw, sorry to hear that DH! How many hours of work will you lose?
|
|
|
Post by debtheaven on Mar 11, 2011 16:17:25 GMT -5
It was six hours first semester, only three this semester, but my boss promised me six to nine hours for next year. Plus this is (was) by far my best-paid job, as well as the most enjoyable and fun. ETA: One hour here = 3 hours at local badly paid job. Of course there's a lot of prep work and grading for this one, but I worked SO hard this year creating my classes, assuming that I'd use them in future years. And I just love my students, I wanted to see them grow up.

Well here is my update: I would be jumping up and down like crazy but I think I would just fall over from lack of sleep. For the last 2 weeks both of my girls were sick and the youngest still is, some kind of bug going though the school. and home it came for more victims. CC1- 0.00 CC2- 0.00 Credit Union PLC - 2000.00 CIBC PLC - 10,167.57 Total 12,167.57 Alicesfreedom 03/11/2011 $12,167.57 (9/2/2009 $24,275.73 I226) So we get about 3000.00 back on our income tax and that should wipeout the plc from the credit union. I have worked out a simple budget and I set 15 months of 2 payments of 375.00 per month to pay off the CIBC PLC. So at the end of this month it will be under $10,000.00. May change as time goes on. Not going to do any clothes spending unless I absolutely have to. This pay cheque has my socks and underwear buying on it, and I have been planning that as I have been doing laundry. Ya, that looks and sounds good to me. ;D
