I don't even normally do what most would consider "stockpiling". I live in a teeny tiny house. Between the 4 of us there just isn't room for a stockpile. I normally buy based on the sales and if I can find a coupon to boot so much the better. I do buy things like school lunch stuff by the bunches in the late summer as they go on mega sale now. I also buy things like paper plates etc in the late spring. As the papre plates are emptying I fill up that space with the school lunch stuff. I have teenagers so I don't normally worry about expriation dates. The Splenda has a date that is a year away anyway. this is the first time though that I bought stuff that I had to really think about where I was going to put it. I refuse to live like someone on Hoarders so it has to be put away somewhere. It is strange to put TP in the attic but I figured it isn't temp sensitive. It won't go bad like food. And being in the plastic totes it is safe if any pests get in up there unbeknownst to us. And I did put a note under the TP in the bathroom closet that there is more in the attic in case I forget.

As I just lost everything in my fridge/freezer, unless you have a Generator, you are in for a world of hurt

I started this thread about 2 months ago, and at the time said I had enough food to last 2 weeks. Since then I've been 'mini-stockpiling' and now we have enough HBAs to last about 6 months and enough food for at least a month Our current food supply will probably be close to the limit since most of the expiration dates are for 12-18 months out and buying much more would risk spoilage. I do need to work on my paper towel/TP stash...

Due to an unfortunate reno related accident with the power to my DGMs deep freeze- I lost a couple hundred dollars worth of frozen stockpile... However- I did get my jollies this morning when DB tried to go in the freezer this morning and realized all the food was gone (and has been for a couple weeks now) DGM is going to replace my food- just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Right now? Maybe a month or two. Back when we did a lot of gardening and canning we could go a lot longer. It's like this. My grandmother passed away in 99, we opened the last jar of her canned beans about 2 yrs ago. the last jelly about a yr ago. We still have jelly put up from last yr my dad did.
with staples like flour, sugar, and corn mill a person wouldnt have to go hungry at all.

I freeze meats (I'm a cowpooler, pool with my parents and buy beef my brother raises), coffee creamer (have to have coffee creamer, and I just had eggnog flavored stuff this week--I like to mix things up), butter (only started doing this recently, butter almost never goes on sale anymore ) and other stuff. Best thing I've found for freezing meat that isn't already butcher wrapped for the freezer is to wrap it in Glad Press and Seal, then put it inside a ziplock freezer bag and then sometimes put it in a plastic bag on top of that--it lasts forever this way. I also have frozen enchiladas and other meals I've pre-cooked. Between my freezers--yes, that's plural, but electricity is cheap here, I've ran central air all month, plus the freezers, plus two refrigerators and my bill was $70 for the month--and pantry, we could eat for a long time. I've actually been eating it down to clear up more room. HBA we're good for a long time too, my favorite leave-in conditioner got discontinued so I bought a ton of it at Grocery Outlet.

I just want to say THANK GOD for my stockpile. I'm in NE PA and live less than a mile from the Susquehanna river. I'm on a hill, so, no flooding here, but our entire "town" is under about 6 feet of water...our only grocery store, 2 gas stations, a few restaurants, etc. I'm essentially stranded because even "side" roads in the area are either under water or washed away. It could be days til I can get out again, and even then, there will be nothing locally to buy. The next "city" is 15 miles away and also under water. Resources will be extremely limited for who knows how long.

6 deodorants-me (did you know deodorant has expiration dates??)
I never pay attention to the expiration dates on the deodorants. They use to never have them.

iggy--if your pantry/cupboard has room you can store the pasta in baskets (or even a box if you don't care how it looks) and either stack the bags or stand them up, that way they can't slide all over the place or out the door when you open it.

I think common sense is key when considering expiration dates. Since deodorant is not ingested, if it is still effective - I say go for it too.

Okay, stockpile related question: What 5 proteins do you recommend stockpiling? They can be anything from fresh, frozen or canned. I am stuck on ideas after beef in the freezer and canned tuna. Definitely chicken for me. I buy whole chickens when they go on sale for about .69 lb or less. I also buy 1-2 small packages of boneless skinless chicken breasts or tenders when they are on sale for 1.69-1.89. I eat them a lot and there's so much you can do with them. I actually prefer the tenders. A small package here has about 10 tenders, and I usually split it into 2 ziplock bags to freeze. It's not a ton of meat per package, but I usually use them in casseroles or other dishes so they are the perfect size. Stretches the $ a bit too. At Easter/Thanksgiving time, I will also buy 1-2 turkey's and ham's and stick them in the freezer when they are rock bottom price.

I prefer fresh veggies or frozen, but I will stockpile canned veggies when they hit rock bottom. I just stockpiles kidney, black and pinto beans, they were on sale for .39 a can.

I have 4 turkeys about 20lb burger, 100lbs tuna, 10lbs pork and 20lbs butter frozen and some other stuff like chicken so could go a year on protein. I have maybe 5lbs rice, 5lbs potatoes and 1lb pasta, 15lbs peas and beans so several months on starches. Almost no fruits or veggies put away but a few cans and a bit fresh so maybe one month on that. After running out of produce I would be too short on fiber to continue living on stockpile but I could skip buying meat and for a year. I need to can more tuna but still have 20-30 pints canned. I got almost 200lbs of albacore but not enough jars to can it all. I have 4lb frozen blueberries left and some frozen pears so I guess maybe 2 months with a decent supplement for another year or two.
We fish so cooked 5 salmon last week 4 smoked pink, 1 fried silver, so we could freeze smoked salmon or catch more and freeze raw salmon. The rivers are jumping with them this month so just down the hill we can walk salmon fishing if we had to.

I started stock piling when I first got married in 1967 to a man raised by an evil stepfather. When he was a kid food was only in the house for dinner, SD picked it up on the way home with good food for him and poor food for wife and kids, no food left for lunches or anything.
He had a need to have lots of food around and make sure I knew I was welcome to eat any of it whenever. He made me make a list of what I used then would buy 2 to replace it. The cupboards were stuffed. I canned since I was a girl and was used to a pantry of canned goods. One day I canned 100lbs of tomatoes because I got a good deal. I am miserly so when I find a turkey for 19-29cents a pound I buy it and go back for another. You can get 23lbs of turkey for under $6 so why not own several for year round use. I will cook one this week. I got a turkey fryer and a little turkey so might try that soon but need oil. I will roast a huge turkey no sides at all, place in the refrigerator and DBF will eat the legs and thighs over about 4 days, I will eat some breast meat and freeze some for future lunches then might boil the bones to make stock for turkey and dumplings or soup so we will have no cooking for about a week because if he is hungry he will eat turkey sandwiches. I $6 turkey will feed 2 people for more than a week if you freeze some cooked meat or stock cheaper than one fast food stop and not really any harder to do. Thaw turkey, pull guts out, rinse, put in oven on timed bake. I boil the guts(neck, liver, heart, gizzard) and feed the liver to the cats, he will snack on the rest while the turkey cooks. I start it cooking in the evening so it is done about 2AM so it cooks in the oven a while and I refrigerate when I wake up so it never is a hot meal.

My house guests just about depleted my stockpile so I am starting over. There are some items I have left that I had a huge amount of (like bar soap) but they went through all the items I actually use. Sigh. So we begin again. But I will take it easier this time around and buy just a couple of each thing on really good deals. No more 10 papers a week for me. I get 3 and maybe one from the ex and so never get more than 4 of any item and only then if it's free.

Okay, stockpile related question: What 5 proteins do you recommend stockpiling? They can be anything from fresh, frozen or canned. I am stuck on ideas after beef in the freezer and canned tuna. For me it would be chicken breasts and shrimp. My local grocery store regularly has bone in split chicken breasts on sale for 0.99 cents a lb. Most of my freezer is this. I also like shrimp that is frozen and other fish like flounder, scollops and salmon. As far as canned I will buy tuna. I have also bought canned shrimp and crab. Canned salmon is good if you like it. I always just put mayo on it like tuna. My daughter likes it that way. Other than that I have plenty of peanut butter. I am not sure that counts as a protien but I treat it that way.
