OK, is it mere coincidence that I have fb open in another tab in this browser and I am seeing ads for electric vehicles and a group promoting "drill baby drill"?
This isn't the first time this "coincidence" has occurred- where something related to a discussion here, all of the sudden starts popping up over there...

It isn't paranoia if they are actually out to get you.

Same thing happens here on pro-boards. I reserved our hotel for our vacation on hotels.com. I come back to pro-boards and the banner is an advertisement for hotels.com and not only that, specifically for the area I booked the hotel.

I speak with a group of friends daily on fb. When we talk about shoes, ads for shoes pop up. When we talk about kids, kid related stuff pops up. I don't think it's a coincidence at all...........

I just paid my corporate Amex bill online, then got a banner for Amex when I came back to the board. I don't think it's a coincidence...

Yeah- on facebook-- OK, fine. I get that. That's their business model, and advertisers pay big bucks to target users-- and I would even argue it serves users well. But...when I'm over here and all of the sudden the words I typed-- "drill baby drill" show up there...?

How online marketing is becoming very "user specific"

Good - I'm sick of wasting my time watching ads for hard-on medicine or acne cream. Just tell me about what I might actually want to buy.

Uts all background computer heuristics - code is written in to identify you interests based on your searches - google and just about everyone else uses it to "make your on-line experience more pleasant". I was listening in to NPR a while back and an author has come out with a book covering this topic. Part of the books premise is that with these computer alogs that the user is often directed to narrower and narrower perspectives and points of view as the spectrum related to a topic is narrowed by your weighted search criteria. If you search on liberal views or websites - further topical information will be narrowed to only liberal - your ability to search for conservative view points becomes limited - the opposite is true and expands to the entire realm of information access you may have.

I was hoping the fact that I use the "private browsing" function on Firefox would help limit this type of invasive advertising. Anyone know if it does?

No. Private browsing is a sandbox that prevents other individuals using your PC from gaining any knowledge about your browsing activities. To the sites you communicate with, you're still an ordinary user. In order to get rid of ads that "track" you, you'll need a plugin like AdBlock Plus (or equivalent). As for the "creepiness" Paul mentions: you're not imagining it, Paul. ProBoards uses Google syndicated ad services. Whenever you visit a similarly augmented site, the ads have access to your "history" with respect to the advertiser. I should also note that ProBoards submits your gender, age, and location info (if any) to generate the ads you view. Finally, Google ads also absorb data from Google searches. So if you search for "Toyota", expect that you'll see a lot of Toyota ads popping up over the next while (even if you were just trying to find that article about why their accelerators jam).

That is where the tracking cookies are, so it is a pretty good possibility.
