Christians have hijacked many things - including Christmas and Easter. Apparently they didn't want to Christianize Halloween, Valentine's Day and Groundhog Day: Christmas: Is it "Christian" or Pagan?www.goodnewsaboutgod.com/studies/holidays2.htm

Why in the world would the Constitution dedicate a good portion of the First Amendment to the protection of the citizens right to practice their religion if they intended to protect citizens from religion? That's not to say that the Constitution doesn't defend the citizen's right to abstain, but it does not in any literal sense, even suggest that one citizen has a right to be protected from exposure to the religion of another.

Does the constitution protect freedom FROM religion?Only to an extent. The government is not supposed to favor any religion over another, but we have a history of favoring Christianity over any other religion. Christians waited until the founding fathers were in their graves, to breach the separation between church and state, because they simply can't stand that they can't have control of everything. It is only recently that people decided to enforce the Constitution and many Christians are pissed about it. You can pray whenever you want, but the government is not supposed to promote Christianity over every other religion. answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20101010114203AAz9iTo

"They're not, it just seems that way to you because you hate Christians."
Where do you even come up with this stuff?

...imo, you'll need to restate your claims, then, and defend them... in this discussion, you have complained that Christians have "laid claim" to marriage... yet then you went on to ask us why they are doing so... fwiw, herein lies my confusion... ...so, either restate your case... or ask yourself why you would ask your readers to defend your premise... ...otherwise, "Happy Independence Day weekend!" to you...

You expect Huffpo to deliver an unbiased report on gay marriage? Had you engaged your brain before your mouth, you would have noticed the article was written by Lee Jefferson, Professor, Centre College.

Because it will inevitably be impossible for one religion to be practiced freely if another religion becomes mandated by law. A classic example of this was Sunday Closing Laws, which made it difficult on the Jews, whose Sabbath is actually Saturday. Because the Christian religion mandated that all businesses be closed on Sunday, Jews had to make the choice whether to give up their own religious belief or shut their businesses down the entire weekend.
This is how a religion bolstered by codified law inevitably interferes with the right for someone ELSE to practice a different religion. Therefore, one needs to be free FROM religion in order to have the freedom OF religion. The idea of freedom "from" religion does not mean others cannot practice their religions. It just means that I have the right to be free from having your religion become the law of the land. Religion, and the various dogmas that surround it, should be a choice, not a mandate.

Shirina have you ever seen or know of any studies about Atheist In America?? The reason for my question is we have a College Prof Michael Newdow out here in California who wrote a book about Atheist and how he wants to remove all references to God on all government documents, currency, buildings, statues, plaques and etc and has filed several law suits...He has debated his book with Christian Conservatives and the debates got out of control and he just lost it a few times...
In the suit filed with the U.S. District Court in Sacramento, Calif., Michael Newdow claims that the present use of the phrase "violates the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses of the United States Constitution," and he seeks to stop the government from using it on mint coins and print currency, as well as in "any act or law."
However Mr Newdow lost this suit thank God for that

Yep I've heard of Newdow and his Atheist crusades. In the strictest sense, he is correct, but on a personal level, I really don't care if he fails or succeeds. Having the word "God" on our currency doesn't force anyone to observe religious laws or customs, and it certainly doesn't mandate the users of currency or government buildings to become a Christian. Therefore I really don't consider this much of an issue.
I do, however, believe that the 10 Commandments should NOT be displayed in court houses. This is because the 10 Commandments are decidedly Christian, and the 1st Commandment (Thou shalt have no other gods before me) is unacceptable in a place where a person goes to be judged. That sort of bias shouldn't be looming over anyone during a trial.

You obviously have not travelled much in South America, and Europe there are Christian symbols everywhere.. Do you want them all removed as well and think about how absurd that would be..
Even in Havana Cuba you will find crosses and christian symbols in restaurants and bars.. So Castro seems to be OK with them but you are NOT...BTW Castro went to Jesuit Schools in his youth

HuffPo article in #66: one of those ignominious articles so contrived that it actually reduced my intelligence. I am now--regrettably--stupider than I was before I read it.
Like debating the man who insists the sky isn't blue because it scatters light and technically only the light is blue. His grasp of the fundamentals is so tenuous, we might debate him on how many homosexual "marriages" can dance on the head of a pin.

First of all, when mods carelessly bite, they should expect to be bitten back. I find it hard to believe your intelligence could be reduced.

It's a sad state of affairs, Lak. Any more slippage and I'll end up as a staff writer for ThinkProgress.org. I bid thee good night.
