Tea Party Summer Camp To Teach Belief In God And SelfishnessA Tea Party group in Tampa will offer a summer camp to indoctrinate children into a strange mix of Ayn Rand and Jesus Christ: The organization, which falls under the tea party umbrella, hopes to introduce kids ages 8 to 12 to principles that include “America is good,” “I believe in God,” and “I work hard for what I have and I will share it with who I want to. Government cannot force me to be charitable.” [...] Children will win hard, wrapped candies to use as currency for a store, symbolizing the gold standard. On the second day, the “banker” will issue paper money instead. Over time, students will realize their paper money buys less and less, while the candies retain their value. [...] Still another example: Children will blow bubbles from a single container of soapy solution, and then pop each other’s bubbles with squirt guns in an arrangement that mimics socialism. They are to count how many bubbles they pop. Then they will work with individual bottles of solution and pop their own bubbles. If their summer camp is successful, the tea party group will try to teach the same curriculum to public schools during Constitution Week. Because in the Tea Party’s addled mind, silly gold standard games and lessons about selfishness actually have something to do with the Constitution. thinkprogress.org/justice/2011/06/15/246341/tea-party-summer-camp/

Tea party group offers summer campTAMPA — Here's another option now that the kids are out of school: a weeklong seminar about our nation's founding principles, courtesy of the Tampa 912 Project. The organization, which falls under the tea party umbrella, hopes to introduce kids ages 8 to 12 to principles that include "America is good," "I believe in God," and "I work hard for what I have and I will share it with who I want to. Government cannot force me to be charitable." Organized by conservative writer Jeff Lukens and staffed by volunteers from the 912 Project, Tampa Liberty School will meet every morning July 11-15 in borrowed space at the Paideia Christian school in Temple Terrace. "We want to impart to our children what our nation is about, and what they may or may not be told," Lukens said. He said he was not familiar with public school curriculum, but, "I do know they have a lot of political correctness. We are a faithful people, and when you talk about natural law, you have to talk about God. When you take that out of the discussion, you miss the whole thing." Tampa Liberty is modeled after vacation Bible schools, which use fun, hands-on activities to deliver Christian messages. One example at Liberty: Children will win hard, wrapped candies to use as currency for a store, symbolizing the gold standard. On the second day, the "banker" will issue paper money instead. Over time, students will realize their paper money buys less and less, while the candies retain their value. "Some of the kids will fall for it," Lukens said. "Others kids will wise up." Another example: Starting in an austere room where they are made to sit quietly, symbolizing Europe, the children will pass through an obstacle course to arrive at a brightly decorated party room (the New World). Red-white-and-blue confetti will be thrown. But afterward the kids will have to clean up the confetti, learning that with freedom comes responsibility. Still another example: Children will blow bubbles from a single container of soapy solution, and then pop each other's bubbles with squirt guns in an arrangement that mimics socialism. They are to count how many bubbles they pop. Then they will work with individual bottles of solution and pop their own bubbles. "What they will find out is that you can do a lot more with individual freedom," Lukens said. While the Liberty school is the first of its kind in the Tampa Bay area, Lukens said a group in Kentucky ran a similar school, and he learned from their ideas. There is room for 40 students in the Tampa school and as of Monday, eight had signed up. The fee is $15. "We've had classes for adults," said Karen Jaroch, who chairs the Tampa 912 Project. "Now we want to introduce a younger generation to economics and history, but in a fun way." If the school is successful, Jaroch and Lukens will look for ways to run more sessions, either during the summer or after school resumes. In fact, Jaroch said the group might try to bring its curriculum to the public schools during Constitution Week in September. "We definitely teach the Constitution, especially during Constitution Week," said Linda Cobbe, a school district spokeswoman. She said the district would need to make sure the organization does not have a political agenda, and that they would need to be approved by SERVE, a nonprofit agency that clears volunteers in the schools. Lukens said it is too early to speak in detail about what will happen after July 15. But, he said, "we plan on coming back and coming back and coming back." www.tampabay.com/news/education/k12/tea-party-group-offers-summer-camp/1175119

Only a liberal would think it's selfish for people to be able to give their money to the charity of their choice instead of having the government dictate where their money goes. Only a liberal would think it's selfless to have the government take from somebody else and give it to anther person, all the while spouting how "giving" they are....being charitable with somebody else's money isn't really being charitable at all.

And only a liberal would assume that parents (most likely tea party conservative parents at that) voluntarily sending their kids to a summer camp constitutes indoctrination. Honestly, I doubt many liberal parents will be sending their kids there.

The idea that they would then target public schools with their propoganda IS concerning...
Hey.... guess what... if you give your money to charity... then you don't pay taxes on it.... but until charities start paying for infrastructure, military, etc. etc. .... don't expect a free ride...
I guess you are Pawlenty 'google solution' proponent? Maybe it should be... as long as we can google a charity who is providing it...

My son is going to a math summer camp to prepare for the Math Olympiads, a squash training camp to prepare for the state championships, and a chamber music program to prepare for auditioning at the New England Conservatory. Should I pull him out and send him tot he Tea Party camp?

You might have better luck sending him to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Another story brought to you by the Soros group.
Any more or less concerning than the liberal indoctrination that has ruined our educational system over the past 30+ years?

You shouldn't. This kid is a math, sports, and music genius even though his dad spends the day spamming message boards with "penis envy" jokes. There's something supernatural going on there.

Perfectly reasonable: the government stealing money from people to give to others is not charity and does not teach "compassion."
Compassion is when you give of yourself, something that many liberals seem to understand at least based on their leaders like Obama who rarely donated to charity until he ran for President.
Lefties are just so strange to me: it's "selfish"" is simply seeking to keep what you earn but it's not selfish to use the govenment to steal from others, under threat of the gun, to give to you or your ideas.
Silly liberals.

We are not suggesting that we stop investing in the military and infrastructure, especially the former since it is constitutionally permissable (then again, shouldn't most infrastructure be funded on the state and local level?) but not the unconstitutional wealth transfers, particularly since all they do is breed more poverty and dependence. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, WIC, Welfare, Section 8 house... we survived for a couple of centuries without them yet the left somehow things that without it, we'll all die. I've read some history: no account of people tripping over tons of dead bodies because we lacked these social services. If you want them, either lobby at the state and local level or provide it yourself but stop manangling the Consititution!

Not a genius. Just talented. I love this board. I would have been banned for being a liberal in the prior one in one minute flat. They actually allow liberals here! I am sure old timers like Ed are not happy about it?

Lunacy,
What instrument does your son play? My daughter plays the French Horn, and wants to go to a conservatory, too. She's got one more year to prepare...
It's tough to make a living as a classical muscian these days. Fortunately, my daughter knows how to landlord. Your kid got a plan for income?

Lunacy was being rhetorical, Horses.
He was making the point that in his opinion, "Tea Party Camp" isn't up to par with math championships, squash championships, or a prestigious music academy.

Virgil, could you look at the thread entitled "What?"
I left and came back to find the thread title changed from Roommates Anthony Weiner and Jon Stewart to RAAmAtes Jon Stewart and Anthony Weiner.
There are weird glitches all over the thread including Lakhota's name. The non-political chit chat thread is affected and a few more.
I tried retyping the original title for the Roommates thread but the letters changed immediately from a to A and from o to A.

As for income, he will inherit quite a bit.

I was completely factual. I do have a 10 year old who is a national math champion, state piano champion, and preparing to play his first state tournament in squash.
