www.nbcbayarea.com/news/politics/San-Francisco-Mulls-Goldfish-Ban-123923649.htmlFirst kittens, then puppies and hamsters and now goldfish? San Francisco's Animal Control and Welfare Commission is recommending that the City ban the sale of goldfish, tropical fish and guppies in its borders, according to Matier and Ross. The recommendation to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is part of the commission's ongoing efforts to discourage "impulse buys" of animals. The commission's ban would cover pet stores and breeders in the City. It comes after more than a year of study and findings that aquarium fish are often mass bred under inhumane conditions or stripped from the wild. However, the ban is only a recommendation and not likely to be passed by the full board of supervisors to become law. As Supervisor Sean Elsbernd told the San Francisco Chronicle "this is another Animal Welfare idea that will end up in the dustbin of history and go absolutely nowhere."

Did San Francisco ban rational thought at some point?

Good grief! I could see cats and dogs, if they're having a major problem with strays. I've never, however, heard of goldfish roaming the streets!

They want to legalize drugs, and SF is a sanctuary city.

I don't know ... holding helpless rocks hostage in your home for your own personal enjoyment seems pretty worthy of legislation to me. Don't you realize that those pet rocks were probably raised in inhumane and crowded conditions before they were thoughtlessly plucked from who-knows-where and forced to live in cute little boxes?

I was surprised to see a goldfish booth at a local carnival last year...remember those, where you throw the ping pong balls into the goldfish bowls and win a goldfish? You would think they would be a target for these people.

here are other issues the commission has worked on: The commission has jurisdiction to address issues of animal abuse, cruelty, nuisance or any conditions that may directly or indirectly affect animals. The Commission's work focuses on the great variety of animals such as companion animals, wild animals, reptiles, birds, animals bred for human consumption, etc.
A few of the issues that have been addressed by the Commission include:
Feral cat management Animal protection in domestic violence situations Cat dumping African Clawed Frogs in Golden Gate Park ponds Incentive opportunities for pet-friendly landlords Rabbit coursing Spay/Neuter legislation possibilities Prospects for expanding Fish & Game's representation in SF Removal of elephants from the SF Zoo Banning the sale of foie gras Owner/guardian language Pets riding on MUNI Banning the sale of fur Recreation & Park Department's Dog Policy Humane treatment for UCSF laboratory animals Live animal markets Cat declawing Bite-and-run legislation Responsible and humane care for outdoor dogs
As an advisory body, the Commission makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors regarding animal issues. The Board is responsible for all policy decisions and development.

Banning the sale of foie gras Really?!? Ducks are overfed in order to make their livers outsized to produce lots of fatty foie gras. Torture don't you know.

SF defies explanation Mine looked pretty much like that as well. She's "about" seven now (don't know for sure because she's a rescue through www.savegsd.org/ (pics and descriptions on the site).

Probably true although nature might be just as ruthless. In researching Koi I read that at least 50% of the young fish are destroyed and possibly less than 1 in 10, don't remember the numbers, make it to sellable size. Having watched live bearing fish, some don't even survive the day before tank mates eat them.

My experience with goldfish from winning them at kid events, etc, is that they die pretty quick. Therefore.. is SF trying to make goldfish an endangered fish??? Unintended consequences? Someone should start a counter ruckus.. watch the animal rights people get all confused... We had guppies when I was a kid, a whole tank full. They always ate their babies.. my Mom should have been jailed and my brother and I taken in to state custody for having to experience this horror....

Goldfish were about the only pets my Mom was willing to let us have (allergies, asthma and hayfever issues) and she always swore that if goldfish could survive in the Milwaukee River when she was growing up, they'd survive in our house. And they did. I won a goldfish in 2nd grade and I think he/it was still around in 8th grade.

Wow!! We never had a goldfish live very long. And we fed them, did right by them.. But, my ex father-in-law had an awesome KOI pond he built. Had huge KOI, like at a zoo or something. They kept growing as he expanded the pond. It was beautiful, weaved through his back yard.. He did have a problem with the coons sneaking in at night hunting the Koi, though.
