dcmetro- I live in MD and we go through a lot of that here. It's a lot cheaper (and financially more sound) to rent here depending on where you are. Especially since where I am- a decent condition house is easily around $250-$300K to start. For 3BR.

People know I am exceedingly frugal and my mom likes to comment that I make my pennies scream. She however has learned a lot from me, she may have a small balance on one CC but she can pay if off if she wants. Before she would carry a pretty good balance at times.
Most people don't know our true finances and are wondering how we are not on the verge of foreclosure as DF has been out of work for almost 2 years. I stay home with our kids because DS#2 is special needs and running his life/appointments/monitoring him is a full time job.
We only have our mortgage and the mortgage on a rental we own. I have made the comment to people that if we had had consumer debt and/or student loans we would have been dead meat.
If my sister knew the full extent of our finiances she would likely be jealous as her husband makes over $150K yet when they moved back to MN last summer they had to borrow money from his family AND they defaulted on one credit card (which they did settle and pay HALF of what they owed)

snerdley- I wish that droning whine of "I can't afford it" worked on my DM- she doesn't seem to get that I don't make near as much money as she does. Like you said "Maybe I truly can't afford it"- that's usually me when DM wants to eat out all the time or blow money on things that think can wait.

It is equally annoying when you are guilt tripped into trying to spend money you legitamately don't have (without taking on debt) beause the other person thinks you should.
I never know what to say other than "That's not in the budget now"

I am relatively well off and only have mortgage debt now. I am very happy to say I also have a decent 401K balance and a growing Emergency fund. However, I know that all can be wiped out if I lose my job and cannot replace it easily or have a disability that makes it impossible to work. You just never know. With that in mind, I do my best to live frugally and save for the future. Someone posted Sacrifice is giving up something today for something way better in the future. For me that is retirement. I want to be able to retire without worrying about having to work (like my parents are in their 60's and 70's) and also be able to have a little fun during my retirement. I really don't care what people think of my decisions and I seldom discuss them with anyone except my BF because I know that a small sacrifice today will mean so much more to me in the future.
While getting out of debt means making tough decisions and it is not always fun, I think everyone has it in them to do it if they really want to. Jealousy is a wasted emotion!!!!!!!!!!!

As we get closer, I get quieter about it. I wonder if the snarky comments were made because the person felt bad about the direction they are heading..... It doesn't make it right, but at least it's forgivable, lol. By the way.... Hello! Hey! Hi! How r ya?

Once other find out you have become debt free, the requests for money come endlessly. Such was the case with my parents, after they had a mortgage payoff paperwork burning party.

With the exception of these forums, and one or two very close friends, I don't think anyone else realizes that we're debt free.
