1. Argumentum ad hominem abusive (Not pertaining and illogical but thought provoking).
----Rush Limbaugh doesn't know what he's talking about because he is addicted to pain killer pills and he's fat.
2. Equivocation (The same term used via two different meanings).
----Since Rush Limbaugh wants Obama to fail, he wants America to fail ----(Here we see Obama and America being used via equivocation).
3. Red Herring (Changing the Subject So as to Avoid the Question)
----QUESTION: Is Obama a Marxist? ----ANSWER: I believe politics is for the good of mankind.
4. Straw Man (An Argument Attacked That's Not Argued). This seems to be Obama's favorite, he bases his arguments for doing things in response to arguments that have not been made
Statement: To those who say I am from planet xenon, I say no I am not. No one said he was from Xenon. but he said he wasn’t anyway.
5. argumentum ad misericordiam (using pity to disprove your argument - also could be an ad hominem).
----STATEMENT: America should shoot Osama Bin Laden right between the eyes and kill terrorists. ----RESPONSE: You're mean, we're suppose to love everybody.
6. post hoc ergo propter hoc (because of this, then that)
----Because Glenn Beck thinks the Obama Administration is Socialist, ----then all of Fox network believes Obama is a Socialist.
7. False Dilemma (False Dichotomy) Only allow for two options.
----Glenn Beck is either a Republican or a Domcrat ----Obama is either a Marxist or a Capitalist.
8. ignorantiam elich (Appear to Ignorance).
----Because Socialism is wrong Capitalism is right. ----Because Obama is a liberal, my position is right since I'm a conservative.
9. Slippery Slope (A Snowball of Unrelated Questions and Statements to distract from the issue at hand)
----QUESTION: Are you for or against abortion ----RESPONSE: I believe we should all respect each other, nobody is going to understand another person's feelings, you should think about being in the other persons shoes, what about rape, what happens if we have to use hangers again? etc, etc, etc.
10. argumentum ad populum (Appeal to Popularity)
----the Liberals are the ones that won the election, so you may as well go along with their policies.
When you start studying logic, you will begin to see that the liberal can't stop with the logical fallacies. And, when a conservative really knows how to define, document, and defend their cause via a successful refutation against the liberal enemy, Liberals will virtually ALWAYS resort to logical fallacy #1 over, and over again. .
When the Liberals start calling you names you know you are on the right track.
Moral to be remembered: The sooner you can get a liberal to start calling you names, the sooner you can laugh and move on to something productive.

We normally end it by showing facts, but we also know that contrived conspiracy is the hallmark for the far right.

Heh. I find by changing a word here and there, every point would apply if directed at the opposite side. Might be better to say: Ten Most Common Ways People End Debates.

When the Liberals start calling you names you know you are on the right track. Actually it's either name-calling or purely emotional rants...such as "Well I guess the conservatives just want all children to starve!" or "well, then I guess we should just allow old people to die in the streets!"

No, Paul, it's not mine. I'm not that swuft. But I agree , , , it is a brilliant take-off on the liberal's manifesto for debate: Saul Akinsky's "Rules for Radicals", and thanks for the Komment.
Actually, somebody gave it to ma and said they had picked it up at a Tea Party meeting. I had a devil of a time scaning it and converting it into something I could cut and paste.

Ten most common ways liberals end debates..
Henryclay, I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you. The number 1 way from what I've seen is to ignore the answer completely & ask the question back to the question asker. Thus trying to put the person asking the question on the defense & evading any kind of answer that will make them look foolish (except of course when they do that continually it does make them look foolish).

Yeah, oldtex, that would seem to be first choice, especially since it is the one that all liberal teachers in all our schools use morning, noon, and night. I mean, how many liberal teachers answer a question straight out, as opposed to how many liberal teachers answer a question by coming right back with a question that has absolutely nothing to do with the one raised by the student? It is part and parcel of dumbing down America by making anyone foolish enough to as a question look , , , well, , , foolish.
And of course ALL liberals look upon themselves first as being what? ? ? ?
Teachers, of course.

Ya know, Henry, I live in a very conservative state. I also know quite a few teachers. I only know four liberal teachers, and that includes the college professors I know (three of the liberals are in that group). The rest are all staunchly conservative. Additionally, this state is not known for the quality of its education, so whether teachers are liberal or conservative seems to have little bearing on the purported "dumbing down".

This definition is borderline. A red herring is a false lead. It isn't as much about changing the subject as it is about making sure discussion doesn't go anywhere. The deeply flawed original scan of President Obama's birth certificate was a red herring, for example. This one is wrong. post hoc ergo propter hoc means 'after this, therefore because of this'. A logical fallacy based on the erroneous presumption of causality (a mouthful, I know. ). For example, if Osama bin Laden had been killed two months after President Obama had taken office, the news headlines would undoubtedly proclaim "Obama Captures bin Laden After Just Two Months". That is, the media would attribute bin Laden's capture to Mr. Obama's recent election regardless of whether or not the two events were related. As some have pointed out, conservatives are just as guilty of PHEPH. For example, blaming the US's astronomical 2009 deficit on Pres. Obama's policies. The even-more-astronomical 2010 and 2011 deficits--not so much.

Interesting thread.... but I do agree with the comment that debaters on both sides have been known to use these sorts of argument tactics.

You know you're in a P&M debate thread when ...
someone blames Bush for something someone blames Obama for something someone blames all conservatives for something someone blames all liberals for something someone calls someone a Communist someone calls someone a Fascist someone calls someone a Socialist someone calls someone a racist someone says something disparaging about someone's faith (or lack) someone brings up abortion someone brings up Obamacare someone brings up Sarah Palin someone brings up illegal immigration someone uses a derogatory/ shortened version of political parties: Pubs, Dems, Dims, Libs, Neocons, Dittoheads, etc. someone alludes to the fact that people of opposing parties must be nuts someone mentions a conspiracy someone claims they are being picked on or singled out someone points out what someone else has said that was wrong someone posts a musical You Tube video someone mentions unions someone mentions welfare someone mentions political correctness
.... and people RARELY mention "the markets" ;D

We normally end it by showing facts, but we also know that contrived conspiracy is the hallmark for the far right. Yep, because Oliver Stone is a fringe rightie. Dude, everyone from the land of kookville aren't lefties-- but some of the best conspiracies are from the left. I never met a magic bullet, fake moon landing, Area 51 conspiracy theory, 9/11 truther that wasn't a left wing nut.

Doubting government isn't confined to liberals; nor, are conspiracy theories and the belief in same. That's more a personality trait than it is a political one.
