HOWEVER- i do not allow photoshopped pics of him or other public figures.. Another question, since I am new here. What exactly counts as a direct insult? Is calling someone a Welfare Rat because they are on Medicaid a direct insult?

I think you need to clarify moonbeam, calling a someone who posts here a Welfare Rat, could be construed as a direct insult to that poster. Speaking of people in general as Welfare Rats while insulting to the population in general, is not a direct insult.

OK, is it then OK to say people who get Medicaid including people on this forum and outside are Welfare Rats?

That got me thinking even more. Is it OK to call the wider population of African Americans the N word on this forum? Insulting to the population in general, but not a direct insult to anyone.

Frankly, I don't see the need to call anyone a "welfare rat" anymore than I see the need to use the "N word" to describe any group of people. We should all have vocabularies that are adequate to express our thoughts without resorting to the use of that type of epithet. It's just not necessary. Why not think of it that way, rather than trying to figure out where we can use insulting terminology?

Where is it? I don't see it. Would love to ask this and other questions there.
One other thought, if calling someone a troll is not a direct insult but rather an observation, why is calling someone a Welfare Rat based on facts a direct insult and not an observation?
If it were up to me, frankly, I would either allow all insults, or ban all insults, general, indirect and direct.

Is such vocabulary needed?

As some of you know, I was in this forum some 6-7 years back, when it was part of Your Money. there was one basic rule in this forum them. Be patriotic, say nothing negative about the POTUS. Some folks were really vocal about this, and the policy was strictly enforced as well. Is that rule still in effect? This is not MSN, the POTUS as a public figure, like other public figures in politics is open game. Come on CME, I perfectly remember those days when libs were always scattering flowers and lollypops in President Bush's pathway and showering him with praise day and night on the MSNmoney P&M board.

We don't know, for sure, anything about other posters here ... unless we know that poster personally (in the "real world"). Therefore, we don't know if the insult we're throwing out there is based on fact, or not. We know what we read, and how we perceive what we read. Not everything one reads here will be the truth. I don't think that's going to come as a big surprise to anyone with a reasonable amount of experience on message boards. Additionally, what we perceive may, or may not be what's meant. Without body language and environmental clues to act as a guide in determining the meaning of something written here, there is more margin for error than would be encountered in a direct, "real world" conversation.

We have had photoshopped photo's of George W Bush as a monkey, we have had photoshopped photo's of Bush french kissing a Saudi king. Disparaging the president has been a part of politics and political satire for as long as we have had politicians, stay in the realm of good taste, not what you consider good taste, what others consider good taste.

I agree, cme, that a direct personal attack is exactly as you described it. That's the kind of thing that ignites "board wars". I'm not one to believe that our fellow posters are too stupid to be aware of that. While, as I said, I don't see the need for name-calling at any level, whether personal or general, I'm also aware it happens and will continue to happen. I wish it weren't true, but ... if wishes were horses ...

It and other such terms , should be verbotem here. In fact , in society as well, even in thought but there we haven't any control, at least from what I understand. That is not IMHO but a fact and hopfully the powers here feel the same, such expressions, verbottem and if used..a zap would be the results, a 24 hour or a sayonora, up to the powers to be, the history of, the intent or just how powers to be got up from what ever side of the bed that day..their call. Ok that part, IMHO.

Thank you guys for the link to the CoC. I will read it and take my questions there. NML, I believe Moonbeam referred to you as "Cotes", on a thread somewhere last week. You by chance, are not the famous "Cotes De Rhone" from MSN days are you?
