MORRO: I am going to try your asparagus recipe today. Sounds mmmm good. I found artichokes for a buck a piece. These were 'poor folk' food when I was young. Now they fit into the 'gourmet' category. I'm thinking it's because no one knows how to cook them. That, and the Food channel has a recipe for them.
Stuffed Artichokes
Cut off tops of pointed leaves. (Place on side and cut across top) Slice off the bottom stem so the veggie can sit on the bottom of the pan. Make a bread dressing of your choice, but do not use heavy spices such as rosemary or thyme. Spread out the leaves with your thumb and stuff. Add 2 cups of water to the bottom of a large pan (crockpot) steam for at least an hour. If leaves pull out with no effort, the artie is done. Eating them can be a trick. Using your teeth shave off the bottom of each leaf. Avoid the silk in the center and eat the 'heart'. So Yummy.

Hey Apple, my family has made Artichokes that way for over 50 years....yummy!!!! Incidentally, when you cut the stems off, you can toss them in with the artichokes to steam them. They come out tender.

I grew up near farming land, the artichokes were pretty much free for all. I grew up eating them steamed with an olive oil, lemon juice & salt & pepper dressing. You dunk the end of the leaf in the dressing and then eat the meaty part. Yum! When I moved to the states I almost dropped dead when I saw each artichoke cost over a dollar a piece! A while back I read about this guy trying to sue a restaurant in Miami after suffering severe cramps due to eating artichokes. The guy blamed the waiter for not telling him how to eat an artichoke
