You got me intrigued with your post Palm, I have heard of the agency but knew squat about it. A google gave me, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Science_FoundationIt seems it was founded in 1950 as a seperate agency, put into place by Harry Truman, and for years a very modest budget. After sputnick it seems it's role changed and the budget did increase till today it is over $6 billion per. If you take the time and scroll and read a bit, I know I am asking a lot of you who are commenting on the topic but you might see they do do good , important work, understanding most of you as well as I wouldn't know squat about exactly what they reseach, or as it really works, no labs of their own but grants out to Universitys through out our country on about 10,000 research projects per year, out of about 40,000 submitted for.. I would suggest that there are abuses, projects that make no sense on the surface as are shown, the robot for folding towels, the shrimp on the treadmill, and possible after it was explained to neophyts like we, we still wouldn't understand the need for the research, or possible realize it is part of a bigger picture and a viable research project. Also that it is possible a complet waste of $. It was reported that 20 employees did spend time viewing Porn on the internet, during working hours and while deplorable, out of the many workers employed, not surprising It seems to be a problem with many work sites in the country, the waste of the employer resources by employees. One could ask how many here view these sites during workiong hours , on their employer computers, basically stealing from their employers. I know the rare times I venture over to EE a great # of readers, posters who participate there seem to be doing just that very thing, their comments , not my guessing as to where they are and what they are doing. Many wiill give all kind of excuses ,it's only a few minutes, check the news, happenings , what ever, and I agree and while still stealing, that I can understand , but how many do a hell of a lot more then that, on line shopping, communicating, possible porn if not blocked, not to see how the kids are at home but just shmoozing with friends. The problem of most of these sites and comments you all bring up, and you know it, done purposly by you all. You bring up bits and pieces, make snide comments , see the following, Gov't hard at work improving our lives with the money we give them...." and neglect to do just the minimum research of the topic you post on , to get a good back and forth going between participants on sites like this, and show the possible negative of the topic and never the possibilities of the positive, for shock value, in your mind , thinking what you post indicates something negative about groups , individuals ideas that you have a bone to pick with, they don't by the way. I am suggesting on this one Palm started the thread on, there are plenty of positives for the populace, mankind of the globe, and the country, especially since science and research will be so important to grow our economy, industries to be able to compete in the 21st century. Other nations are doing it in a big way, spending billions, on this tyope of research. China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, India, Europeon countries , Russia, all over, and even smaller countrys too in conjunction with the larger ones. In other words kiddo's , you all have the tendency to tell only part of the story, never attempting to go for the whole enchalada. That is why most of what you post and claim on your numerouse expose boil down to a bunch of Ka , ka with little or none as far as credability being abled to be attached to them, just more ka, ka.

One of the most embarrassing revelations for the NSF was a nude swimming party and wrestling event held at the McMurdo research station in Antarctica.
In one of ten employee misconduct cases, an unnamed male employee was fired after the NSF found out about the Jell-O wrestling event.
The employee emailed the rest of the staff after being fired, referring to the NSF as 'fun Nazis' .
The email then referred to a 'polar bear plunge' – a skinny dipping event that had taken place on the same day – saying 'it had plenty of nudity but no one got fired or reprimanded for doing that.' Multi-million-dollar enterprise: The McMurdo research station in Antarctica costs the U.S. taxpayer $451 million annually
Dr Coburn said this was a prime example of mismanagement of funds.
In other cases, two romantically involved NSF employees went on 47 'getaways' during an 18-month period that cost taxpayers $144,152, and a senior executive spent almost an entire year looking at pornography on his work computer, and speaking with naked or partially naked women in chat rooms.
The executives actions were calculated at costing the taxpayer $58,000.Read more: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1391375/Jell-O-wrestling-nude-parties-shrimp-treadmill--National-Science-Foundation-spent-3bn-YOUR-money-on.html#ixzz1NVtyRxCx

Actually did a lot of wade surfing when I lived in Galveston, had the whole mishagos . Belt with a fishing knife, a shrimp basket kept the shrimp in for bait attached by a rope to belt, travel along with you, always sneakers, after being informed about sting rays and taught to shuffle feet not step , in case coming along them, not to step on, get hit with the tail, poisoned, very, very painful.[Never bought the shin guards some wore ] and a life vest, which probably saved my life when I went to far , over my head, and the tow caught me. It took me almost 30 minutes , laying on the back , over hand my arms to move me back where I could stand, not wanting to drop my $125 rod and spincast reel. That was a scary one and no one around.....never again went over my head, waist high only. If didn't catch anything, went home and boiled the shrimp that was left.

Oh man, nothing in the world as good as fresh shrimp grilled on the beach. Unless it's raw oysters on the beach in the Northwest. . . . Missing the ocean like crazy. Time for Hoowayee.

Hawaii?? I WISH, but have an open invite to my son's beach house in Surfside-- Ron Paul territory--- we go seining there-- huge nets hauled by a person on each end, 2 long poles with a large net strapped to the poles. EASY way to catch shrimp-- hundreds of shrimp in one catch...yummy.............. www.curriecustomnets.com/seine.html Old fashioned, very fun.

You’ve probably heard of shrimp on the barbie, but what about shrimp on a treadmill? The National Science Foundation has, and it spent $500,000 of taxpayer money researching it. It’s not entirely clear what this research hoped to establish.Isn't it obvious what the research is on this one? The government has gone the next step in "natural" energy (I guess wind power was just to expensive) & shrimps on a treadmill is it. (If this works out in a few year you'll be able to buy a Toyota with a 1,000 shrimp in the trunk running their little hearts out. Stuff like this is EXACTLY why the government shouldn't be in charge of anything except running the country. They spend money like it wasn't valuable for mindless projects. They could at least cut back when the countries going bankrupt.

We seem to spend a lot on shrimp----"Texas congressman and Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul — who is campaigning as a critic of congressional overspending — has revealed that he is requesting $400 million worth of earmarks this year.
The Wall Street Journal reports Paul's office says those requests include $8 million for the marketing of wild American shrimp and $2.3 million to pay for research into shrimp fishing.
A spokesman says, "Reducing earmarks does not reduce government spending, and it does not prohibit spending upon those things that are earmarked. What people who push earmark reform are doing is they are particularly misleading the public — and I have to presume it's not by accident."
