DH, could you be more explicit? I see my portion of health insurance on every pay stub but that could be spit in the ocean compared to what my employer is picking up. Where, exactly, are you seeing this number. What document does it appear on?

My online pay stubs starting January 1st of this year have a new box on the bottom right corner that lists the amount the company pays towards my medical and dental insurance. I could have sworn it was a requirement attached to the healthcare bill, but maybe it was another piece of legislation. The box is labeled Employer Paid Benefits and it lists the companies portion of medical and dental as well as the match I get on my 401K. I distinctly remember the thread on the old YM discussing the requirement because people were worried it was a first step towards taxing us for the medical benefits we recieve. Either my company has implemented it early, or it only affects businesses over a certain size. Nobody else noticed the new info on their pay stubs this year?

It's not on my stub either. I think my employer is in the Fortune 500, so it's probably not a question of size.

The requirement is for the information to be reported on your W2; I don't think that necessarily means you'll see it on your pay stub [depends on the company]. However, this part of the law was changed and made effective for next year: www.businessinsurance.com/article/20101012/NEWS/101019986

The CFO at my company estimates 40-50% of base salary is paid in benefits (that includes tuition waivers and reimbursements, so that figure is probably less for other types of businesses)

We get a yearly letter stating everything our employers pays and your "total compensation" It's quite an eye opener as your salary is more than doubled if you count all the "bennies"

now subtract sales tax, property taxes, utility taxes....... Honestly, I don't even want to know. It'll just make me sad. For those of you who believe in karma and think I was bragging, my wife started looking for a job yesterday because she sat down to figure out how we're going to pay for braces and doesn't think we can swing it without some extra income.

Keep in mind that Dark's gotta pay for his SAHW's daytime soaps and bon-bon addictions. I'm surprised he's even able to make ends meet!

And she got elected to a non paying state democratic party seat. I don't even want to know how much the convention this weekend is going to cost me. She also donates some of my loot to the democratic party. I have to pay her roller derby dues. She'd be a lot cheaper if she was addicted to daytime TV.
ETA - Just so we're clear the above is a bit tongue in cheek. I know some people here (*cough Firebird & Gin *cough cough*) already think I'm a sexist bastard, but I realize that half the salary I posted is actually my wife's. I get up everyday and put in my 40 hours a week for my half, my wife cooks, cleans, and gives me sex once in a while for her half. She has every right to spend some of her salary for herself.

wait, wait, wait- Dark did you just say that your wife is a ROLLER GIRL! What team does she play on? What's her skater name? Was her team at regionals in Sac last year? Any chance they'll make it to Portland this year?
We're big Rat City fans (season ticket holders) and went to Sac for regionals last year and have every intention of being in Portland for this year's tournament.
And for those who think Dark is a chauvanist, let me just say, not really possible if his wife's in derby. Those women don't put up with anything.
(I care not at all if I am hijacking this thread - its DERBY people)

The Hollister Derby Girls are still getting started, so they aren't competing yet. The team is being put together by a former member of the Santa Cruz Boardwalk Bombshells. Santa Cruz is about 45 minutes away from Hollister, and where we used to live, so we still consider them our local team. I don't know how good the Hollister team will be when they start competing, but the Bombshells are fantastic! We watched their season opener where they absolutely crushed Sacramento. They're expected to be a top ten team this year, so be on the lookout for them to be kicking ass and taking names at the tournaments.

w00t! New Derby teams, great to see it growing.
Top 10 nationally or regionally? I ask this because the regional tournaments are top 10 in the region, and I have to say, last year at regionals, we had 3 distinct tiers of teams. At the top were Oly and Rocky Mountain - there was no way any other two teams were winning the thing. Under them were Bay Area, Rose City, Rat City & Denver - all great teams to watch, but just not quite at the level of Rocky Mountain and Oly. (I will say that most of the Oly team is made up of former Rat City skaters, so those are the girls I first saw in derby.) The other 4 teams might as well have been playing exhibition bouts. Rat City beat Sacred City by over 300 points. (I know this because I blogged about it and therefor can look it up.)
Tell me what Santa Cruz looks like against the B.A.D Girls, and then I'll be able to tell how good they are. B.A.D. just beat us earlier this month in a close bout that came down to defense (and the fact that Rat City's first half strategy was awful). But unless Oly (who we'll be going down to watch end of May) or Rocky Mountain have taken a step down, they're still at best 3rd in the region.
edited to add: Not that 3rd in the Western Region is a bad place to be. Rocky Mountain and Oly were 1 & 2 in the nation last year, just like they were in the region

Top ten regionally, or at least that's what people were expecting based on their performance from last year as an apprentice team. This will be their first year competing, and they've started a little rough, so they're currently 16th in the West.

I hope they (Santa Cruz) jump up the standings so that I can see them in Portland at the end of Sept.
