How are you guys getting plastic bags without holes for kitty litter scooping? We used to use them, but would have to go through 3 or 4 bags before finding one that was intact. Now I use reusable bags for shopping and buy small trash bags for kitty litter - way less plastic bags needed.

After I put my groceries away, if the bags have holes in them, I toss them at that time. I probably lose 2 each shopping trip due to holes.

Same here. I started buying kitty litter in the large buckets with lids, now I scoop the dirty litter into an empty bucket and seal the lid to keep the smell in. When the bucket is full, I put the whole thing out with the trash. I know I should recycle the buckets, but I see our garbage company throw my recyclables in with the trash all the time, so I assume it's all ending up in the same place anyway.
I have 3 reusable bags that I sometimes remember to take out of the car and bring in with me. At Sam's Club or Aldi, I just use the cardboard cartons, then put them in the recycle bin.

All the reusable bags I have I got for free from somewhere. I have 2-3 I got on Black Friday at Target that do not have a flat botom. I have stopped even taking them in the store.
I have 3 from DH's company that are nice and big. I had 2 at the grocery this weekend and I had less to carry in the house, and as others mentioned they are easier to handle. I have one more somewhere...I need to look for it. I got .05 per bag I brought in. I had nearly $20.00 in coupons with my Doubled coupons, so I just think of it as one more coupon albeit a very small one.
I use the Target bags in the garbage cans in the bathrooms. I use the bags from the grocery store to pick up after the dog. I also have reusable bags I use to carry stuff like lunch etc in and out of work. If I don't use a re-usable the bags build up in my drawer, or I end up throwing them away.
I go to Sam's about once a month, which is why I started keeping the bags in my car. I intend to make better use of them at the grocery store though.

We use the reusable ones all the time and it really makes a difference. Our grocery store takes $.05 off your bill for each one you use. Since we generally use 6-8 that really adds up over a year's time.
Occasionally we do forget them and then we get the plastic ones if we need them for kitty litter, otherwise we take the paper ones and recycle them.

I don't take bags to the grocery store because I get the paper ones and use them for my trash in the kitchen. I take bags to other stores though so I don't end up with tons of new ones. I don't use the cloth ones because I don't want to carry something around so I wad up a store plastic bag and cram it in my pocket. However, getting my husband to do this is next to impossible so unfortunately I always have a good selection of "new" plastic bags to choose from when the ones I keep/reuse in my car develop holes.

I use Johnny Cat litter bags (the only ones that can withstand my cat's claws) and I put that in a Target bag when it's time to change litter bags.

If you have extra plastic bags please think about your local food pantry. Many of them use the bags for food distribution and would welcome he donation.

In both trunk of the cars we have recycle bags that we have purchased but guess what... we tend to always forget to bring them in the super markets.

I'm sorry, but I think bringing reusable bags is just so stupid. Kinda just strikes me as one of those "Hey, look at me...I'm saving the environment" type moves.

I don't do it because it's kind of a hassle. I suppose if it bothered me to carry those plastic bags- I'd do it. But I can't see how I'd personally derive any benefit, and so I haven't done it.

If people really think they are destroying the environment, I just think it's funny cause most wouldn't want to do the things that would really have an impact. But they'll gladly take a few reusable bags to the grocery store cause it's easy. And because they can appear to be more enlightened. I alwyas think it's funny at places like REI when they say "You don't need a bag do you?". haha.

I use the reusable bags, but not necessarily for the environment because I always put my stock of plastic bags in the recycling box at the store anyway. But I have found that the reusable bags with the flat bottom sit better in the back of my minivan. The plastic bags tend to collapse and everything rolls out. If it's not that, it's the bag developing a hole or breaking. I just find the reusable bags to be sturdier and less of a pain to use. I do occasionally get a cashier who doesn't like it, but my feeling is that they are paid to bag my groceries, so suck it up and do it the way I want!

Reusable bags hold more and you can carry more with them because you put the strap on your shoulder. Anyone taking public transportation or walking to get groceries would be wise to use them.

I hear you. That makes sense. For practical purposes, it makes sense. I'm talking about the type that talk about "Doing Their Part". It's kinda like Leo Decaprio "Doing his part" by driving a hybrid and then taking a private jet all over the world. I have no problem with either of those, but don't be a pompous a*s about it. PS. Not saying people that use reusable bags act like that, but in the upper end suburbs around chicago, it seems like they have become another accessory.

We typically get 6 bags of stuff at the grocery store every week. Let's assume 50 weeks due to vacation and you get 300 bags per year. It's been about 3 years since we started using cloth bags so we've saved about 1,000 plastic bags. Add in the additional short trips to the store, where I try to remember to bring one of the cloth bags, and it's more than that. Nothing to sneeze at. It makes a lot more sense than driving to Whole Foods in a big SUV with the AC running full blast and thinking you're "green".
