Hello Everyone. Here is this month's Controlled/No Spend Thread as promised. Please post your goals for the month if you would like me to include them in the bi-Monthly update. For the new people there are no real set rules here, you set your own. The basic goal most if not all of us have are to keep track of the days we don't spend and hopefully by that work on saving money. Some are looking to put it into savings others to pay down debt. For some they only count the day as a no spend day if they spend nothing at all. Others will count it if they keep their total under $5. Some count all spending others only count a certain part of their budget. For example I personally take $400 out of the the bank in cash for everything that is not related to vehicle expenses (like gas, oil changes, insurance etc) or the house (mortgage, utilities, HOA) If I spend out of the $400 I count it as a spend day (although if it is less then $5 I usually count it as a no spend day.) You set your own rules. Any questions feel free to ask. You can post your no spend days daily or whenever you want, just put it in bold at the top with the first number being the number you want me to record. If you are doing daily then: Today (or yesterday) $0 Spend day More then one day at a time: 4/31 days $0 Spend Which translates into 4 out of 31 days in December have been no spend so far. Some use the bigger number as their goal number so do 4/15 No spend Days which means they have a goal of 15 no spend days this month. Post your numbers by Monday at midnight CST and I will have the weekly update Tuesday with those numbers along with smiley faces (see below). 1-4 No Spend Days = 5-9 = 10-14 = 15-19 = 20-24 = 25+ = So lets have a party with lots of fun!

Having a Startsmart Day is referring to when you have 20+ things on your must get done in a day and you accomplish them. Sharing the Simple Lifestyle aka Toasty; Single Mom-KY aka Smokey; MittenKitten aka MK; Pt_In_NY aka Pointy; Red2Black aka R2B2. The Boy is Sheila in Cali's son. the boy or Mowgli is Nsinglet's son Blue is Red_Wagon's DBF For a while I was doing a Question of the Week. One week my question was "How has this thread changed your habits? What tangible benefits have you seen by being a member? I know we occassionally get someone on here that just doesn't get the concept of no spend is so much more then no spending 10 days to blow everything on day 11."
Honeylioness had a wonderful answer I think really defines WHAT we are about:
"I will admit that during my first two months of lurking, I wondered just how in the WORLD someone could not spend any money at ALL for 25 days? Did they just pay all their bills one day a month, and that same day do the food shopping for the month? Like many new to the concept I saw it as horribly, and restrictively, black or white – an opinion first based merely on the name of the thread.
But once I came to understand that it was not so totalitarian and was more about finding a way that worked for you to track your spending and any “leaks” in the wallet, it has felt more like a tool and less like a punishment. I wish I could say that I have paid off five extra years from the mortgage, or now have an EF of six months take home – but alas that would not be true.
What I do have however is a better awareness of where my “leaks” are, what are my hot buttons that make me want to spend on things I really don’t need or really cannot afford right now. And an awareness of the fact when I AM spending money. I think that awareness is key to learning a new behavior or paradigm. Just like lumberlady, some of us have had to look hard in the mirror and acknowledge that we had a problem. Until people can do that, be it an addiction to alcohol or drugs or credit cards ….. they will never really GET it."
Thanks Honeylioness!

Goal: 10 NSD Stretch Goal: 12 NSD Physical Goal: 8 MOAN About my goals: What I am asking of myself here is to better plan our spending. Not spending a mere 3 days a week should not be difficult, and yet, I've never had a month with 10 NSDs, much less 12. (I've made 8, and might make 9 for December.) My goal for the first three months of 2011 is to get us to 12 NSDs a month. So I'm going for 10 in January, 11 in February, and 12 in March. Also, I know I feel better about everything when I exercise. Starting Jan 4, DH will be going to class 2 nights a week. My goal is to use the Wii Fit at least 1/2 hour on those nights. Its not much, but some movement is better than none. My definitions: A NSD is a day when I don't spend anything. Not one penny. I have to track it like this because the vending machine is my nemesis. If I didn't sleep well the night before, I should remember to bring a 2nd coke from home. If I have a long meeting, I have a water bottle with a lid that can come with me. It is possible for DH to spend cash and it still to be a NSD, because the truth is, unless he tells me, I won't know. (And DH hoards cash. I think he still has cash from profit sharing at his job - where he was laid off 19 months ago.) Why I'm Here: The leak in our budget has always been me. I'm the primary earner and the person who tracks our spending. In that sense, I am accountable only to me when it comes to my little expenditures- DH will never know. And to be honest, that wasn't working. $3 three days a week for breakfast, $1.25 two days a week for a coke (really didn't help that the machine in my old building took cards). It adds up. When we were both working, it didn't seem to matter much. There was always more money on Friday. (We were paid on opposite weeks.) And credit cards for anything major. Then DH got laid off, and we realized exactly what kind of a pickle we were in. My little bits here and there suddenly added to up a week's worth of groceries, or a credit card payment. So I need to be accountable, and accountable to just me wasn't working. Sure, I could hide things from the folks here, but if I did that, I wouldn't get the valuable advice and support I need to get myself back on track. And I need that support. We had a great October; fell completely off the wagon in November, but were able to get everything back under control in December. Meeting my December goal has felt like a major accomplishment. It also helps to have people I can talk honestly about money with, about our financial situation. With my "RL" friends, it always feels like I'm whining, to those better off, or bragging, to those we're doing better than. I like talking about finances. It fascinates me. And how can we expect ourselves, or anyone around us, to make good decisions in a vacuum? Having good information is paramount to making good decisions. So that's what this board provides me: accountability, support, and a sounding board/research resource.

It's nearly January so I'll start things off with my post. I do want to stay more focused on the financial side of things this year because I have facebook if I want to whine or rant About Me: female, 26, living in CA, working remotely as a contracted employee, single, no kids, 2 dogs. January financial goals: no eating out at the diner or tacos (sob!), budgeted spending only (mortgage, insurance, car payment, utilities, alarm system, phone, loans, CCs) and $150 max each for groceries and gas. Everything else is kaput. I was thinking about this yesterday looking around my house and thinking "I have enough. More than enough. I need to be satisfied with enough." Exceptions: traveling to Denver in January for work so I will budget $100 for food/drink/car since airports are crazy expensive and I may be renting a car to get around for one of the 4 days. Other goals: negotiate a rate increase with my clients 25% minimum, goal is 30% install and enjoy my new hardware (dual 23" monitors a gift from a client) walk one of the dogs every day, 1 mile minimum be cheerful

I'm in for another month. Goal = 15 NS/CS Days (more if I can get them)
I agree that since we are beginning a new year that a refocusing on our money habits is in order. I do enjoy our other topics but we all need to circle back to the main reason we are here.
Why am I here -- this thread connects me to others with similar values and goals. We can discuss financial things here that make our friends uneasy to discuss because all of us here have similar goals and values about our relationship with money. We would like to see where the money goes and make a plan to cut back on those areas where it seems to disappear. It may be the grocery for some, others it is the book or craft stores, and for others it is eating out or shopping. This thread makes us accountable to ourselves as well as to each other. We also bounce ideas off each other and for many of us have formed good friends across the country with people we have not met in real life. For those of us who have met at one or the other Meet-Ups, it was an experience of meeting with old friends and long hours of conversations that began and continue online. Looking forward to welcoming new members to our NS/CS family.

i'm in! my goal for january is 25 controlled spends. for me, a controlled spend is any money spent, above $5, that was unbudgeted and unplanned. bills or anything that is budgeted for out of a paycheck counts as a no spend. my only worry for this month is my trip to florida. while the food will be free, as will the place to stay (with grandma--yay!) and my transportation to the airport is budgeted, i come from a long line of professional shoppers and 4 of the biggest ones will be there. i believe that i have enough willpower to resist because i have everything that i want and need (except for my size 6 body back) but i know it will be difficult. my second job also picks up again at the end of the month and it's going to be nice to put those paychecks on some of our remaining debt (dh's car). i'm not setting a moaning goal. i just want to see how many i can accumulate. dh and i have been planning on joining the local ymca for a couple of months (we were waiting until january when the joiner fee is waived) and if i can get to 3 classes per week, plus swimming with dd once a week, i'll be stoked. other goals: keep applying for new jobs (haven't heard from the interview yet), post on my blog 2-3/week, read at least 2 of the books on my nightstand, and watch at least 4 of the movies in my netflix queue (why bother to have it if i'm not going to use it, right?) about me--i'm 33, i live in de with my dh, dd (4 y/o) and 2 dogs

I'm in again! Why I'm here.I joined this group three years ago, 1/1/08. In preparation for retirement I calculated what my retirement income would be and started living on that diminished amount, sending the extra income to savings for a last shot at building a better EF. I retired a year later, 1/2/09. I needed this group to keep me on the straight and narrow. It is a place where we can talk about money and economic issues without those around us treating us like we farted in church. By being accountable here, I also am more accountable to myself. I find it interesting how many of us sort of fell off the wagon the end of this year with our spending, as did much of America. Now it is time to climb aboard the wagon again and tighten the purse strings, especially since my income has not risen in three years. About me --I live in NE very near the Black Hills with two fur-babies; Onyx a three yo kitty with CH(like cerebral palsy in people) and a 5 month old tortoiseshell kitten who thinks knows she is the boss of everything. My goals are to stay in budget at all times. Since I live in a very small town with only two places to spend (Safeway and Walmart) I am going to allow 2 days a week for unplanned spending--but it still must be within budget. My other goals are--- 1) Meet with the Estate Attorney--way overdue 2) Thanks to Moneysquirrel and Shanen I will now track everything easily on excl 3) Purge more "stuff" 4) Prepare for and try to live an "Austerity Lifestyle" 5) Eat healthier and plan menus better 6) Eat out less 7)"Shop" from the pantry before the grocery store 8) Learn to make biscuits (not hockey pucks) and pie crust (not cardboard) 9) Get new glasses 10) Save for the Black Hills Meet Up next June

about me I'm a 31 SAHM with an almost 2 year old DS
why I'm here I pretty much do all the spending, tracking and budgeting. Lately I've been pretty slack and I would like to be accountable to someone, as DH has no interest.
goals stay within my grocery/dining out budget become better with coupons and meal planning reduce my trips to stores learn how many days I spend money and minimize that lose weight, get in shape and be done with PT use up all the yarn I have before buying more

Goals: 15 CSD/NSD 15 MOAN 4 QU (quicken updates)
I've been on and off sporadically since the first thread was started by Liz on YM. I live in the PNW, 2 cats, and way too much stuff. I'm working on changing that.
My $$ goal for this year: Stick to my budget...not too good at that. + No more wasting food.
My physical goal: MOAN at least 15/mo.

I'm in for January:
25 - NS (5)/CS(20) days - this means spending only what has already been budgeted for - nothing extra - no matter how "good" the deal. I'm going to try to make 5 of the true - not a dime days. 10 - NEO days - this will be true NEO - either I bring lunch or it doesn't count. This needs to increase during the year - but we have a trip this month and a b-day - so let's start with a reachable goal. 15 MOAN days - either 30 minutes or more of exercise or over 5000 steps
Why am I here? I track all the money in the house and tend to be the one who "leaks". DH leaks if he has cash though - so any cash he gets has to be some that can be spent. We make a great living - and finally got back on track a couple of years ago after surviving near financial ruin. But we got too "comfortable" and traded progress towards our big goals (more travel, a chance to take/try jobs we are passionate about but that pay way less) for lattes, books, and lots of stuff. I want less stuff and more space/time/adventure.
This year is about moving closer to our dreams - new job for me, early retirement/new career for DH, take better care of our health, more travel and increased savings so we can be flexible in housing choices.
DH & I live with 2 furry kids - Ruby dog & Kettle kitty outside Washington, DC in Northern VA.
[BTW - I LOVE being able to preview the message and knowing I won't get cut-off.]

Goals: 15 NSD (not a penny) 25 NEO 21 MOAN hopefully including my full marathon on 1/16 Reason for Joining: To be able to save 5% of our income while continuing to use the snowball method to pay down our debt. It gets overwhelming living in a world where spending/shopping is a constant social activity. It is nice to be surrounded with others who share the same goals and create accountability. About Me: I live in AZ; Married almost 8 years; a SAHM to a 9yo DD, 6 yo DS, 3 yo DD and have an 18 yo DSS. Other January Goals: *Spend an hour a week shredding documents ( I have a bags full) *Clean and Organize my desk *Clean and Organize the Master Bedroom Closet *Clean and Organize kids Room

azmom - and others with shredding - start watching your local government web sites for special days when you can drop off a certain amount of shredding for free. They will have a truck on site and you watch them your box in and shred it (don't do one where you just leave boxes of paper behind). They usually happen around tax time here. It is a great way to get rid of a back log.

I'm in for January - I kind of fell off the face of the computer (world) during December but I have been reading and following everyone.
As I have been lax in the past several months w/just trying to reach as many as possible and having no real goal to achieve, I am setting my goal at 20 CS, which for me is anything over $10.
Me: Single Mom to a 6 yr old boy (Lil' Smokey) and 2 yr old kitty (Moo Moo), live in Kentucky.
I'm here so try to maintain all the blessings that I have and improve things for Lil' Smokey. We have a good life but it could be so much more if I would just buckle down a little. And that starts with actually logging every penny spent in the new year - I had gotten into the habit of just keeping track of whether I spent money of not and not actually paying attention to the $1 here or the $3 there. So I am going to keep a notebook and try really hard to write down every spend - no matter the amount.
BTW - Lil' Smokey was released from PT today and hopefully will be released by the surgeon when we go in Feb.

I'm in again for January.
About me: 29 YO, live with DH, two dogs, and three cats in Northern California
Goals for January: 31 CSD (anything "in budget")/NSD (literal "0")
We're on a tight budget for January and I scheduled a certain amount of money to go into various savings accounts - I've already transferred this as we pay our Jan. bills from Dec. income. So now I just need to stick to our budget on the discretionary categories (groceries and gas) and not spend anything else! We will have one eat-out date using a gift card received for Christmas.

I'd like to try this, but I'm not sure how to approach. I might read a few more responses before I figure out what works best for me. We've just started an envelope/cash-only system; this is our second month. I'll look at what we didn't do well with last month (when we used the debit card when the envelope was empty) and see what I need to focus on.
I'm married, have two daughters ages 8 & 12 (both with bdays in Jan) and two stepsons 20, who lives at home, & 22 who lives at college), teach, dh is a school administrator, am the home money manager, and live in the Pacific Northwest.

I am in for January as the 2nd will be the start of my 3rd year. For the first time that I can remember I have completed something I have started, sending birthday gifts to all of you the whole year through. At least those of you that gave me your address and dates and colors of your kitchens. Since I don't have anything set up for this year, I don't know what I will do. Maybe I will make place mats once I get my sewing machine set up. As for goals for this year, getting my sewing machine set up is one of my goals along with having a bigger EF than I have had ever. Since I will be spending most of what is in it right now on a laptop, I will be starting from scratch. Another goal will be to close the BOM for at least 6 months so I can get a start on my room. I want to get the insulation in this year and help cut down on the heat cost and the cooling cost in the summer. The electric company is dropping the regulations they have had for the past 5-10 years so my electric bill is going up 3%. I know that is not much but it is going up. If I have the insulation in, I may be able to drop it at least 3% if not more. Another goal is to have the hospital paid off in 8 months and then I have one more expense. After that, I will only have the regular household expenses to pay and the mortgage. I am looking for a car and a small refrigerator but they are works in progress. As for me; I live in Central PA, 63yo, 3 fur babies-(Cocoa 16, Spookie 13, and Stinker 11), DS, DIL, 4 GKids at home, and 1 on the way, their 2 dogs, 2 cats, 1 hamster and 2 fish. All of us live in one house. (I have my own room and a bathroom but I have no kitchen.) When I first started here I had 3 more GKids living here. I also have 2 great-grandsons now. I think in my first year here, I paid off a credit card at a jewelry store, a car loan and a personal loan thanks to the suggestions of all the fantastic ladies on this thread. I am down to one personal loan to my BGF and an Emergency Room bill from April of '09. I have been able to pay for car repairs at the time they were due and car insurance twice a year since that is when it comes due. All my other bills are paid up to date.

I'm in for January
Goals: 10 NS, 10 CS, 18 NEO
My rules: NS is no money spent, CS is in budget spending on gas, groceries & household NEEDS
Why I'm here: I need the accountabilitybecause I love to shop. I can always justify why I should buy something. Especially after Christmas none of us need anything, but it didn't stop me from buying my son a truck today. (He wasn't with me, I just thought it was something he'd like so I bought it.)
About me: I'm 38, married with a 2 year old son and 2 fur babies. I work for a non-profit and my husband is a teacher.

Well, today is my 2 year WIR anniversary! I started on the Northeast thread 2 years ago today, joined the Grocery Challenge shortly after that, and the CS/NS in August of '09. I was thrilled to find the MSN boards. I had started my journey to get out of debt about 3 years ago, after stumbling on Dave Ramsey. I, too, am a shopoholic and need the accountability and goals to continue paying off my debt and building savings. I have made huge strides in the past 3 years. I rarely use a credit card and if I do, it is paid in full. I have a budget and know where my money is going. This has not been an easy journey, but, each year gets a little bit better and a little easier. I was so discouraged and frustrated at the start of 2010, I was seriously considering bankruptcy. I never would have believed that going into 2011, not only have I been able to pay for numerous "emergencies" without using a credit card, but I am also looking at having at least $300 a month in my budget after everything is accounted for that I can finally start snowballing with a vengeance!
Goals: 7 NS (not a cent), 24 CS (in budget).
About me: I am single, 41, live in NE PA with 2 doggies and one kitty (my kids). I'm a mental health social worker.

WOW! Here we are at the end of 2010. ;D Why I am here. I started almost two years ago because I was tired of just spending money as I got it. It had dawned on me that I have a DD going to college in the FALL of 2012, my husband has NO retirement, and we hardly ever used cash for anything because we were living toooo large. We have had several set backs, but I am encouraged that I caught myself and thought about where we could be in 4-5 years if I tried to pay my past so I could enjoy the present. I have been working on my 2010 taxes. As I have gone through my receipts I noticed I am still spending a lot of money on clothes and eating out. I had an area in my budget called cash and it always went over. I have got to plug these leaks. 2011 Jan goals 20 NSD ( Not a cent) I got a calendar and marked my planned spend days. DH has had a couple of tough months in the trucking world and had to borrow some money. So I am determined to pay that back ASAP. I have a set budget now. I am also setting a personal goals of 31 NEO I can do this. I am going to take my meals to work and stay at home.

When/Why I joined: I joined this thread almost if not when it began in Aug or Sept 2007, I really don't remember. I started reading the money boards and MSN boards and as a SAHM needed some daily adult interaction that wasn't all about kids. I also wanted to get our grocery bill under control.
2011 Goals: 1. Get the business up and running for DF so he can be productive and bring in some income.
2. Sell the rental home as it just doesn't work being too far away and with a disabled son the income it brings in makes things too complicated.
3. Loose more weight and hopefully participate in an athletic competition. I may not be able to do so due to finances, but that doesn't mean I can't train and get into shape.
4.Not dip into the EF, although this may not be possible I am going to try my hardest.
Who Am I: A REALTOR/SAHM to DS's 7 and 4 YO and DD 2 YO with DF, 2 kitties, 1 puppy, 2 turtles and 2 toads. I live in MN

Welcome, chloe!
I didn't do an about me, so: 35, married, 2 doggies (see avatar), 1 roommate. We live in the greater Seattle area. I work in healthcare. DH has been unemployed for 20 months, but will be starting school on Tuesday. Roommate was laid off from his job up in BC and is staying with us until he can find a new position.

I'm in for January with a goal of 20 No Eat Out (NEO) days. This is the biggest leak in my budget and where I'm tempted to spend the most. Why I'm here: I started in late January/ early February 2009 because I was at a point where I simply didn't have enough money coming in to even put food on the table, let alone a roof over my head. Spending on anything that wasn't an absolute life-or-death situation could literally mean that I wouldn't have anything to eat. And I like my food. Being here gave me the support to get through those tough times and stay on track. Now I'm just a couple of months away from reaching the first of my major financial goals. You all keep me sane.

About Me -- Widowed teacher, 60, lives in the New Orleans Area.
I am still checking the old board. I guess I will continue to do so until it is no longer available if for no other reason than to send a message to MSN that the board is a needed part of my life and many others. I figure that soon I will no longer be able to send that message.

I am not going to be up for the Ball tonight. I am tired and going to bed early. I hope you all have a very good New Year's Eve and a great day tomorrow.

Is this where the New Year's party is? ;D
Who I am: On the old boards I was Angel 33. I am a full time mom to 4 kiddos, and for the time being a part time teacher.
Why I am here: Because I am the major leak in our house and I need to be more accountable. I am a recovering shopaholic who sometimes has relapses.
My goals for this month I would really like to have 15 NSDs, 20 NEO, 25 MOAN.
My goals for 2011 to let go of past hurts, to love more, be more patient, and on occasion allow myself to fly by the seat of my pants. I need to remember I can't always control life, I don't always need to make a list...sometimes I just need to fly.

Angel--Did you do a quick reply or did you click on the reply button? I don't think you can bold or do anything special on the quick reply.

Angel -- Did you make sure that your words were between the codes?
Happy New Year to all of you. May you acheive your NS/CS goals each month in 2011. Of course we really need to pay attention to each day as it comes.
