Sorry Bonny. I am dreading the day I have to euthanize my fur baby. He absolutely hates the vet so I'm not sure I can let him die there. When the time comes I'm going to try and convince the vet to do a home visit. I want him to leave the world in a safe space. With the money I have spent at the vet over the last 25 years (two cats), she should be willing to make a home visit.
My hope, which is a total long shot, is that he will live a good long life and just lie down one night and pass. He will be 16 in January but you would never know it. He is still so vibrant. I think I mentioned already he is currently in remission from intestinal cancer. I know it's going to get him eventually...

This thread is timely. I'm essentially doing kitty hospice this weekend for my 18 1/2 year kitty. We brought her to the vet about two weeks ago in response to a weird coughing, raspy voice situation and not really eating much for the last several days. The vet (not her normal one) did an x-ray which was clear but thought it might be a respiratory infection. She got antibiotics and we thought it she was getting a little better for a couple days but no, she's rapidily declining over the last week. Her regular vet saw her Friday and was very concerned about her condition. She's lost about a 1/3 of her body weight over the last month. Vet sent me home with another round of anti-biotics and a steriod. They aren't helping. Now she'll only eat butter from my finger. No type of food is working and she won't even eat butter from a plate. Only my finger. I don't think she's ready to go quite yet. She will still follow me into the kitchen where I'll give her as much butter as she wants. I think she might find it soothing. She's gone outside a couple times and still wants affection. But I think we're very close. Yes, I wish she could talk so I can be sure to help her. I’m sorry Bonny . Have you tried meat baby foods? Yes. Was able to stringe feed for a couple of days and now no longer interested. But she's still jumping up on the counter stools and the dining room chairs. I think we're close but not quite there yet.

If you are on Facebook, ask your local friends.

I would prefer it be his normal vet if possible, but if she will not do it then I will definitely be calling them. My dad used a nationwide organization that was very good and professional.

My sister's 16 yr old rat terrier is having multiple seizures per day even after the vet has tried different medication. Mom and I are keeping our mouths shut bc this is sister's baby but it's very clear that the dog is suffering. My sis is a total animal lover and has a wildlife bio degree but she doesn't always use common sense with pets.
She has a huge fish tank that she doesn't make time to clean regularly.
For 18 months, she let one of the kids have a pet turtle. His cage was huge and their house is small.
IMHO, a couple years ago, she didn't put her elderly cat down early enough either. Her Dh has said no more cats.
She just got a puppy that's meant to be a replacement bc she knows she will lose original dog soon. But again, common sense, why add training a puppy when you've got 3 kids <13 and are dealing with an elderly dog.

My little angel crosse over the rainbow bridge this afternoon. I'm sure going to miss her! In the spirit of there's always something funny that happens at the end we had to have a little drama. She had been going out on the deck but keeping close by. So I let her out to enjoy one last bit of outdoors. Of course she disappeared for an hour...and left me a dead mouse.

Definitely sounds like a cat. A final gift just for you. What a sweet departure.
I don't really understand how anyone could not like cats.
So sorry for your loss

Very, very sorry.
I’ve decided I don’t want any more cats after my current sweet girl dies (hopefully not soon!) I’ve always had cats, usually at least two, but it just seems to hard when they pass. Now I worry constantly about my girl, even though she’s perfectly fine and not terribly old. Just too hard.

I am not saying I'll never have one after my current boy passes but I do not want another one for a very long time. It was so hard when my previous cat passed and I keep trying to prepare myself for this one. My heart is just going to be broken. The other thing is I want to do some extended travel in a few years. I don't want to have to worry about leaving a pet, and it's not fair to them. They get lonely.

I've had my oldest cat since she was a kitten. At the time, I had two other cats. They passed in 2018 and 2021. I didn't want her to be lonely so I got another cat three months after my Buster-boy passed in 2021. Shivers is a crotchety old lady and wanted nothing to do with Growler so I got him a friend in 2022. A kitten. Oh! They became fast friends. Then Growler got very sick earlier this year. It was two hours between me calling the emergency vet, taking him in, and then coming home with an empty carrier. My kitten was kind of lost without his "big brother". I got Niko just a couple months ago for Rascal. They now wrestle and pretend they're NASCAR all the time. I don't know if I'd get another kitty shortly after Shivers passes but I do know that I'll never own just one cat until I'm much older. Cats need companionship for when you're gone during the day. If you're never gone then it's a non-issue.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. Although I know I did the right thing we will miss Goldie Zwei very much. She was our German rescue cat and was with us for about 13 years. Lots of adventures together. To echo and address comments about a pause between animals, that's what we did between our Goldies. We took a six month break between Golden Eyes (aka Goldie Eins) and Goldie Zwei. I knew it was a sign that when DH was surfing the German shelter site and found another black cat already named Goldie that it was a sign to start looking for a cat again. While we weren't sure that she was "the one" it did kick our butts into gear about getting a companion for Nikki. Cats do get lonely too. Turns out she was "the one". Yes, they can break our hearts but they provide so much joy and companionship. And let's not forget that cats keep you humble 'cuz you know who's in charge!

I said no more dogs after Sabah died. Two months later I was browsing Midlands and there was Charlotte. Her photo looked exactly like Midnight. There went my vow. No regrets.
Then this year I abandoned my "one dog only" rule that I made after the previous three and got Wilbur. No regrets there either.
I AM sticking to my guns and not having three dogs again though.

I’m sorry, Bonny. When I lost Gizzy, it was so very hard as he was a huge comfort when I went through my medical nightmare. He lived on me 23.5/7, and when the visiting nurse came to change my PICC line dressing, he’d get shooed off my lap until she was done. Gizzy would stalk behind the nurse to make sure she wasn’t hurting me. He’d assume his position when she took the drape away. I think he was an original weighted blanket (long before they became a thing), because him lying on me did make my hip hurt less. Anyway, they all take a piece of our heart with them. I got another immediately, not to replace Gizzy but knowing so many cats need homes and the faster I find one, the faster another animal now has a good home. TD is right. I’ll likely be a crazy cat lady if he goes before me!

I've got to give a big plug for Chewy. They are taking back the 'script cat food (they are providing shipping) and credited me for the upopened cat litter and told me to donate it to a local shelter. Amazing!

It's a thoughtful gesture.

Mine were not extravagant but they were fresh. They were in a vase.
