I am an irresponsible weed wacker operator. In about 15 minutes I ruined it completely. This was after a good session of cutting weeds around the foundation and nicking the hose in the process.
The repair covered 3 states. There were zero repair parts for that model at the store where we bought a newer model of the same manufacturer.
DH brought the weed eater home with us traveling. He goes to a farm and ranch store to find out if they can repair it and got a dunno response. He went to the trusty hardware store where low and behold they have the same brand. The clerk looked up on their parts logs to show him what part he needed and how to put the head back together. The part was 90 cents.

Pat, it sounds as though your land isn't 'tiled'....
We did our 3.3 acres for 4k back in '09, after buying it Jan.'08 when that Spring we attempted a garden....no go...just what you describe in your above post...YUCK! Alot of wasted effort... Tiling the land made ALL the difference, in gardening and everything else. Since tiling, our land dries quickly after rainfall and stays dry. NO MOSQUITOES! Great gardening!
We're close geographically (Michigan vs. Indiana) and share alot of the same weather patterns.
Just a suggestion..

I'm back from the errands for today. I picked up a 1 month supply of my cardio drug, that saved me $292, bought 6 1# pkgs of bacon @ 3.99 ea and popped them into the freezer. Then bought some NY strips steaks and some other meat on sale @ The Fresh Market. I also bout 2 small chicken pot pies for the freezer and 2 of the small caramel apple pies for the freezer.
I have no doubt winter will be coming once again to NW Arkansas, and since we're not taking our usual long trip to Fla this year, I intend to be ready.

~I was charged for 2 bags of kettle corn last week, when I bought only 1, so I got my $2.61 back at the store last night. ~Saved $12+ in an erroneous roaming charge on my cell phone bill. The cell company credited the roaming charge the moment I called, and the extra taxes will be apparently credited on next month's bill. ~Saved 29% = $111.91 last night at the grocery store by buying sale items, and using coupons and e coupons. ~At the gas station, I saved 10 cents off a gallon using my value card fuel points. Total savings: $127.72+.

On Friday a local hardware store was having a "we pay the sales tax" sale so I bought a 1/2 horsepower garbage disposal for $99.99. Now I just need to get the darn thing installed.

The first time I used a weed wacker (years ago) I almost took out my front porch ETA: Guess I should reply to subject. I staying home today - hard to spend money that way. But look out tomorrow.

I am an officer with my dd's school's PTA, and I have been planning a coupon flyer to be distributed to our new members this fall. It features offers from local businesses. I checked a national chain to see how much it would cost to copy the flyer on to card stock or glossy paper and they quoted between .48 and .55 for the size we needed. So I decided to check out a local place and they offered to print it on glossy card stock for .15 a sheet! I am so happy we are supporting local business and saving the PTA money.

I received a mailer today from the large Senior Center that is affiliated with our hospital in Fayetteville, Ar. The senior center is part of a huge multi-million dollar foundation from a local family. I actually took time to look at the mailer and they have some interesting programs for seniors, and to join the Senior 55 there is no charge. Included in the mailer was a list of businesses around here that offer discounts to members of Senior 55.
I'm going to join.

I put some checks in my "cart" with checks unlimited but did not complete the purchase. They then sent a series of e-mails lowering the price. In the end I paid $7.99/box with free shipping and free address labels.

My monthly spending has begun: ~Saved 27% off my relatively small grocery order last night utilizing sales, and e-coupons. ~Saved nearly 50% off my OfficeMax purchase today utilizing a $26.00 credit from recycled ink cartridges (thank you for the idea several years ago, donnafreedman!!) and a $15 off a purchase of $75 or more snail mailed coupon. ~Called the office land line carrier last week for an account review, and they reduced the bill by $10 for the next 12 months. ~Without me asking, the dental hygienist took $43 off my cleaning total today since I am paying out of pocket between now and the end of the year. Total savings: $217.77. I Smart Spending!!!

Wow, LOVE it Iggy! I've certainly been watching the spending, (and trying to save money), But, I don't feel like I'm winning. I guess it doesn't make sense. For instance, yesterday I went to the grocery store. DH drinks almond milk. I was good with the sale price (2 for $6.) They are usually $3.69 each. I had two $1. coupons making the purchase 2 for $4. out of pocket (plus tax of course) Nice savings. Then when I looked at the "sale" prices for B1G1 on meat, the now "sale" price was ridiculous at the B1G1. It broke down to standard pricing. The pork was about .50 over per pound from their usual pricing, so, I did get the pork. It gives DH and I good pricing for four meals. Great, no, good, okay. I did some armchair shopping yesterday for some clothing. Dress code at work is casual. I am very thankful for that. Walking through a manufacturing plant in dress clothes is costly. I don't generally update my wardrobe often, but, I really felt I could have used a couple of shirts/blouses. A store that I had purchased a dress from a while back sent me a flier, so, I looked at their clearance w/coupon code to see what I maybe could use. I put two tops in my shopping cart. The tops I felt were high priced, but wanted to see how the discount would work out. The discount was fine, however I really wondered how it figured that I saved $80 on two shirts. Really? I guess I just don't like when a store marks things up to put them on sale. I know they do that, but I really wish there was more truth in pricing.

We had our baby shower 3 weeks ago and got a ton of great items that we will certainly put to good use. I registered with the help of a friend so that we didn't waste our time on silly things we wouldn't use or were junk.
What was left on the registry included a few bigger ticket items -- car seat base for DH's car, monitor, baby gates. Babies R Us sent us a 15% off anything left on your registry coupon. Combined with Labor Day Sales and specials, we got basically everything else we needed. Between the coupon and gift cards we had received, we only spent about $60 OOP. We also split up the transactions to get items for free (they were running a promotion of "get this for free when you spend $$). In all we got a video monitor for free ($99 value, we looked at the reviews on amazon before getting to the store) and 2 sets of home safety gear with outlet plugs, cabinet door locks, door handle things, etc. ($20 per kit in the store). DH was very excited with all of the savings and I was very happy to have it all taken care of!
I know I am having a shower at work this coming week and one more next week also. I imagine that will be mostly clothes and things, which are always appreciated! DH's office is chipping in on a gift card -- they already asked him what store we would prefer and they did the same for someone else last year. We also were fortunate enough to be given a swing from one of his coworkers for free and she is willing to give us whatever clothes she has or anything else we need. Hand me downs are more than welcome in this house!
I have been stockpiling diapers for months now and have a pretty good variety and amount. All in all I think we are as prepared as we can be, considering this is our first.

My apple tree is tossing apples like crazy. I have picked them up and made many apple dishes to freeze. A few bags of peels and bad apples went to a friend to feed the deer. When the ones on the tree ripen, I am sure my neighbor will be asking. I will also prepare a few bags for the soup kitchen. I label them just like they were going into my freezer; and I didn't have room, but he does. This saves the one man owner/cook time.

Monthly bill paying day! To save money, this month I: ~Found a dime at the post office, and a quarter in the dryer. Into the penguin bank it went for this December's cash into a Secret Santa gift card. ~Called my credit card company to ask for a reduction in interest rate. No dice. Then I called my school loan company and asked if they would reduce the interest if I switched to auto pay. No dice. ~Saved .40/gal at the gas pump by using my grocery value card. ~Have 12 coupons ready for tonight's monthly grocery shopping. Instead of $300, I am going to shoot for spending $200 tonight. ~Asked one of my vendors if they would extend their August special through this month for me. He said yes. Savings $165. ~Skimmed through the guest bathroom drawer where we keep extra toiletries for guests who might have forgotten something. If we ever run out of shampoo/cond/soap/toothpaste/etc., that stash should suffice until an upcoming payday. Savings: $168.55 plus a potential $16 in coupons tonight.

~Saved 23% at the grocery store last night buying specials and using paper and ecoupons. ~$1.20 in change will go into my penguin bank tonight. ~$25 savings transferred online. ~$505 went toward debt this month. ~Saved $3 on one of the only mag subscriptions I allow myself.

I did my first deal at CVS today in FOREVER!
I bought 3 packs of Huggies diapers @ $8.99/each, plus a big container of wipes for $2.99. I used 3 $3/1 any Huggies that was expiring this weekend and 1 .50/1 wipes to save $9.50. This put my total OOP down to $19.46 for 100 diapers and a container of wipes. Because I spent, before coupons, $30, I was given a $10 store gift card. I never count the gift cards, catalinas, EBs, or whatever you get back as money off of your purchase, because I still put the money out today. The gift card will come in handy at some point!

I'm taking advantage of this nesting period and the first weekend in close to 4 months that I've had NOTHING we're committed to!
Today I: Did 3 loads of laundry cleaned my bathroom dusted and swept the whole house (2 floors) organized my Tupperware cabinet -- the bane of my existence! organized my medicine cabinet organized and condensed under my kitchen sink finished up these never ending thank you cards washed, peeled, and cut up veggies for lunches for the week made some dip took out a whole bunch of recycling emptied the drainer in the kitchen sink (this seems to be the never ending job in my house!) ran and emptied the dishwasher finished packing my hospital bag
Tonight I plan on sitting down with my sales flyers and coupons and go through all of those. If I have the time later I did bring some work home this weekend that I just didn't want to do that I can work on. Thank goodness there was nothing good on TV today!
I have 2 weeks until my due date so I'm trying to get as much accomplished now as I can before our lives are turned upside down for good

I used my first coupon for free chocolate chips early. Buying only an onion for 50 cents.
This afternoon I got the free coupon from my fitness center. Who else in there would be brazen enough to cut out a free chocolate chip coupon? Just me. This time I was hungry and bought 3 eighty-eight cent pizzas and a honey kiss melon.
I truly wanted to get all 8 of the 88 cent pizzas but I'm under strict orders from DH NOT to fill the freezer up right now.
I also got 10 cents a gallon off of gas and the two for one car wash Sunday deal. I am so glad my friend told me about the 2/1 deal and no coupon needed. Sunday only.
To answer why I'm not washing my car in the drive way. I do not want to try to hook up the hoses. I even got quick connects and still can't get them connected correctly.
I apologize to all the CA peeps who are waterless and me talking car wash.

Lately, I've:
Googled specific pantry and fridge leftover ingredients to utilize them. So far I'll use up 1/4 cup corn meal, 1/2 cup crushed pork rinds, some bottled 1,000 Island dressing someone brought to one of our parties earlier this year.
Grated and froze 6+ cups garden zucchini for winter baking.
Scheduled a coffee appt with a friend in lieu of a more expensive lunch appt.
Though the energy company's website doesn't say, I assume peak usage hours are the same for everyone: During breakfast and evening hours? So, I'm now starting the dishwasher before bed.
Clipped a bunch of coupons yesterday.
Made my own bleu cheese dressing.
Switched my snacks from pistachios, $4.99/bag before coupon or sale, to less expensive sunflower seeds at $1/bag.
Reduced grocery spending from $300+ mo/ to $201 in September.

Recheck w/your energy company. We do NOT have fully impliimented smart meters here (yet) but I believe peak hours are about 6 am to 8 pm. Running the DW at night is good, same for laundry. I would run laundry first & set a delay start on DW.
There is a difference in food/nutritional value between nuts & seeds. You may want to rotate to get the best of both & save $$.
Congrats on the reduction in grocery spending in this economy. Is it sustainable or due to reducing freezer & pantry stockpiles?
