it also happens to be true. it also happens to be what I would think if I were him.
why did that statement cause anybody trouble? I can't figure it out.
It made white people uncomfortable. Duh. That alone is enough to condemn Obama for saying it. It's the same thing that drives people to insist "Black Lives Matter" should include the word "too" and that I must discuss false charges against men whenever I talk about rape culture.

Black Americans deeply pessimistic about country under Trump, whom more than 8 in 10 describe as ‘a racist,’ Post-Ipsos poll finds
President Trump made a stark appeal to black Americans during the 2016 election when he asked, “What have you got to lose?” Three years later, black Americans have rendered their verdict on his presidency with a deeply pessimistic assessment of their place in the United States under a leader seen by an overwhelming majority as racist. The findings come from a Washington Post-Ipsos poll of African Americans nationwide, which reveals fears about whether their children will have a fair shot to succeed and a belief that white Americans don’t fully appreciate the discrimination that black people experience. While personally optimistic about their own lives, black Americans today offer a bleaker view about their community as a whole. They also express determination to try to limit Trump to a single term in office. More than 8 in 10 black Americans say they believe Trump is a racist and that he has made racism a bigger problem in the country. Nine in 10 disapprove of his job performance overall. The pessimism goes well beyond assessments of the president. A 65 percent majority of African Americans say it is a “bad time” to be a black person in America. That view is widely shared by clear majorities of black adults across income, generational and political lines. By contrast, 77 percent of black Americans say it is a “good time” to be a white person, with a wide majority saying white people don’t understand the discrimination faced by black Americans Black Americans deeply pessimistic about country under Trump, whom more than 8 in 10 describe as ‘a racist,’ Post-Ipsos poll finds Isn't that what was being said about Obama ? What goes around comes around. Quote; I n another example of unnecessarily inserting himself into a sensitive racial issue, Obama proclaimed after the shooting of Trayvon Martin, “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon.”
Again, making that correlation was completely unnecessary – it served no purpose other than to make non-black Americans feel guilty and uncomfortable.thepoliticalinsider.com/20-reasons-obama-most-divisive-president-history/As a non-black woman, I did not feel guilty or uncomfortable. When the Black unemployment rate was -0- racism was at it’s high water mark. So your point? Maybe you can show a link, where black unemployment was zero. Slavery. No link needed.

I can't imagine either. What I will say is that in four years, one as a candidate and three as president, Donald Trump has not put together a single sentence as thoughtful as anything in that address. There are many reasons why Obama was presidential while Trump is not. This is only one of them. Here is another one, nothing to do with folks of color...This one is about a possible seawall around NYC to protect against rising sea levels..Donald says $200 Billion...actual estimated cost $129 Billion...over 25 years....Granted expensive though real estate costs in the city are such, it might make financial sense...vs the two sea walls that are to be built in Scotland to protect one of his golf course properties.. {Am thinking if he loses in 2020 the Scotish folks will revisit that proposal...possible NOT look so favorable on it..Just saying.} ----------------------------------------------------------- "President Donald Trump offered a definitively low-tech — and maddening — “solution” to rising sea levels amid global warming: “Get your mops and buckets ready!” He came up with the snide, unhelpful suggestion in a tweet as he criticized ongoing discussions about the possibility of constructing a sea wall to protect New York City, where low-lying areas have already experienced increased flooding from the encroaching ocean. The president called it an “environmentally unfriendly idea” that will “look terrible.” -------------------------------------------------------------- www.yahoo.com/news/mops-and-buckets-trump-climate-change-034911826.html----------------------------------------------------------- The man really is a s**t....

Again, making that correlation was completely unnecessary – it served no purpose other than to make non-black Americans feel guilty and uncomfortable. thepoliticalinsider.com/20-reasons-obama-most-divisive-president-history/There is a question with which we have (probably) all at one time or another driven our parents crazy. And then we grew up and most of us forgot the question until we had kids of our own. I have not forgotten that question twice, but it seems you may have JMA. The question is "why?" . Why did this comment make you feel uncomfortable? Why do you eel the need to attack the message rather than look at what it means? Is it possible that the truth of the statement forces you to accept that having a black president does not mean that racism is on its way out? That we as a society are not as advanced as we love to pretend? Live would be much better for many people if we just would be willing to do the work and look very hard at the motives behind our reasoning. If we were not so willing to go with "because xyz (be that a religious text, some philosophy, or even a law) says so.

Maybe you can show a link, where black unemployment was zero. You don’t link all that well yourself do you. And I have seen you completely ignore links from me and others, so no. But if you think about all the clues you should be able to figure it out. Not all Blacks were slaves in fact some were slave owner themselves.

It's interesting that you met a conservative, intelligent and articulate ex banker who's black? stereotype much? If you listen to the gossip around here, there are zero, Right leaning blacks. and every one of them is going to vote for some one other than Trump.

Agree , a handful and they were also involved in collecting Africans for the trade....there is even a true story of a Jew serving in the Wehrmacht in WW2...to save himself...he did...explained the circumcising as needed as a kid..health reasons..but all of those incidents, yours, mine were rare, not the norm..shouldn't even be mentioned IMHO.

Not all Blacks were slaves in fact some were slave owner themselves. The point is that during slavery, there was probably almost 0 unemployment for blacks in the US, but that didn't mean blacks were happy. A lot of people (of all colors) work a full time job and can't make ends meet due to the high cost of housing and day care compared to low wages. The middle class hasn't seen a net raise in their income in a couple decades. These people either have to work 2 or 3 jobs to get a head, or they tread water. My point being, having a job doesn't necessarily mean you're thriving.

approximately 0% were descended from slave owners.
the relationship between boss and worker is a milder form of slave-master relationship. the authority is no longer absolute, but it is still there.

We are already below what economists consider the full employment rate, so not sure who you mean. But if you would like to support denying food stamps for malnutrious children you are simply mimicking the Repo-Con party platform. Or if you support Trump’s new effort to throw folks off SS Disability (there might be some lazy disabled people) same thing.

<sigh> I guess some people need to get our more, outside of their comfort zone. Maybe to meet people who are permanently disabled who cannot get out of the house to get a "real" job. (Some can't even get out of bed without help.) Some are born that way, some are veterans who were permanently injured in one of the many military operations our country seems to get involved in. Some became disabled due to illness or injury (I met a man who lost both legs in a car accident). Life happens. So, lets not punish people more than they are already suffering, o.k.? If they need help getting food, or their prescriptions filled, I don't have a problem with that. Any of us here could be in similar circumstances. Like the saying goes, you're only one drunk driver away from permanent disability. I do NOT agree with the government kicking people when they're down. On the topic of being non-white, I can report that they're treated pretty poorly down here. If a group of men are fishing on the ocean shore here, the local law enforcement will check the licenses of the non-whites here, and usually leave the white guys alone. Imagine living with carp like that your entire life. I can't even imagine...

Imagine if all those guys congregating in VA with their assault rifles were black.
People would be pissing themselves out of fear and saying the government has to do something about those thugs. Put an assault rifle in a white guy's hands, and he's a patriot.
