another way to look at it , removing monuments of traitors to their country, rebelling physically against their country...taking arms up against the government of the times and one of the tenants of that revolt was their objection to the fact that just POSSIBLE... {it wasn't till much later in the time of the rebellion} that the end of keeping humans in bondage to be able to be sold and treated as animals..This is such a bad thing? IMHO , Better to keep these monuments on display that for so many Americans find distasteful...especially on public lands...better to be displayed on private property for those who feel the need to be around them...there I have no objection …. Yes, we can change history,, if we burn enough books, try to erase actual history. It must have been an easy win for the North since we can not find where the South had any leaders or soldiers.
I am thinking your reading skills are faulty...thus a repeat... "IMHO , Better to keep these monuments on display that for so many Americans find distasteful...especially on public lands...better to be displayed on private property for those who feel the need to be around them...there I have no objection …."
"try to erase actual history." I am not suggesting we erase history...with all the books written, the Burns documentary , the history is with us forever...even 150 years after the last shot was fired.. However, something u are not into I am thinking, or concerned about either.....13 % of our population is of color {black} and I am guessing these Southern States, say Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia Mississippi and others , the % of those of color is even higher, and I will suggest these citizens of these Southern States, who are of color, are uncomfortable, to say the least with these monuments in honor of the leaders of that rebellion . Where in earlier times..the times of Jim Crow, segregation, lynching and such, no one in their right mind who were of color was going to publicly object to the statues...their kids going to schools named after the leaders of the confederacy, driving on highways also named for them....but today they are able to make their complaints heard and surprise, surprise...there are a great # of white folks who are joining them..remove these things from PUBLIC areas...rename the schools, the highways... There are some who do object to their removal, , yourself for example...the Donald too, but lets face it...we know where he is coming from...seems u 2 from the same place..{sigh.. ...oh well..}

Moving those monuments into museums where they belong is not "erasing history". It is preserving history. We know very well why some people want those monuments in public places. As a friend of mine (a woman of color) said "They want to remind people like me of my place"

How many were put in private places, how many went into a warehouse , how many were destroyed?? I have no idea....nor care really. If there are enough folks interested, I am sure they can get someone to donate land and have a fund me program to cover the moving and placing of the items in a nice park like setting...a flag pole flying the battle flag of the confederacy too...though a pole flying the stars and stripes too would be my personal choice.. Thus history preserved, monuments too and sensibilities of their citizens of color also taken care of...Possible even parents of color taking their youngsters to such a park to show them their history too , as negative as it is.. In a way Jewish kids are introduced to the history of the holocaust .."never again"...the strength of Israel today...history kept alive, even painful ones..

As a friend of mine (a woman of color) said "They want to remind people like me of my place" That was the reason the statue of General Nathan Bedford Forrest and the remains of him and his wife were moved in 1904 from Elmwood cemetary here in Memphis to a park in the city. Memphis government wanted the statue removed from the city park but Tennessee laws overruled the city. The park was then sold to a non-profit which did not have to comply with the law about statues. The statue was removed and given to the Sons of Confederate Veterans who can erect it anywhere they wish but not in Memphis or anywhere in Shelby County. The remains of Forrest and his wife are still buried in the park. At sometime in the future they will be dug up and returned to Elmwood cemetary where they were originally interred.
