States allowing illegals to apply for drivers licenses

Myself, I am against this.
That said, I wonder why states or the Federal Government could not issue an "International driver's license" or a National driver's license instead of a regular state license.
While I was sent to Vietnam back in the late 60's, the military gave everyone a quick class in international driving laws and sign recognition and issued everyone a driver's license. No one was allowed to drive in Vietnam without being issued this document.

We were in a war in a foreign country but had to have a driver's license to drive there.
Why can't we do this here?
It could be a license to drive recognized across the nation, and at the same time even if it shows the domicle residence would not be recognized as a state license to register to vote in our elections.

Illegals don’t have the same rights as citizens. As a citizen you have the right to vote, illegals don’t have that!
All other rights are HUMAN rights!
If you travel in a foreign country you can drive using your state driving license for a limited period of time depending on the country. Some countries require an international drivers license and when obtaining one all they need is your own drivers license not a passport or any form of legal entry.
But to understand that one would have to travel outside the country and see that other countries also treat American citizens their own citizens and sometimes with “enhanced” rights as in “ oh, you’re an American citizen! Right this way! You don’t have to stand in line!”

It strikes me as funny when conservatives suggest things like expanding the power (with accompanied bureaucrat structure) of the Federal Government in ways like is done here.

But I do think that states issuing a regular state drivers license is problematical.

Wrong. You need a DL to buy insurance, so if you do not allow undocumented aliens to have Driver's Licenses, they can't insure their vehicles, and if there is property damage in an accident that they are responsible for - you will be SOL.

No, this liberal wants the illegals to be subject to the same driving rules as everyone else, including basic training on the rules of the road, insurance, requirements, and an ID to show when there is an accident.

Go do some research on the REAL ID Act and all the hassle, push back, refusal, and delays that happened with that.

Go do some research on the REAL ID Act and all the hassle, push back, refusal, and delays that happened with that. 

But the US Military did it with service members in a country with a puppet government so why can't it be done here?

The devil is in the details.......in this case I prefer a fix for the problem. If we are not going to deport them, might as well start taxing them at least as much as American citizens. Hit them with regulation and user fees up the kazoo. As far as expanding power, this is more like actually finding out who is actually here.........instead of throwing out numbers with differences in the millions between who we think is here and who actually is here.

It's simply common sense.  Having a DL is not the same as having the right to vote.  Having a DL does not endow one with citizenship.  It's not even a shortcut to citizenship.  The assertion is beyond ridiculous.

I've lived and driven overseas.  My US DL was accepted for a limited period of time (generally 90 days).  After that I needed an international DL (valid for one year) or had to apply for a local DL.

That is why they NEED a drivers license:to go to work so they could pay taxes!
They pay taxes without having a drivers license but that piece of plastic enables them to move around in search of more work

What do you think the Real ID is for??  You  know that little red (or maybe gold) star on your  drivers license that sez "I'm a CITIZEN or I"M LEGALLY in  America!!!".      I'm sure all Proud Americans will spend the time and effort and have the ability to provide the proof of their claim to American Citizenship OR that they are here legally  so they can get a REAL ID now or the next time they need to renew their State ID and/or Drivers License.      I will let you google what IDs are required to get a REAL ID. 

I'm sure citizens and those legally here  will be proud and happy to go thru the inconvenience of getting a REAL ID.  And what better way to proclaim your Citizenship OR Legally in the US status than with a Little RED (or is it GOLD) star on  your drivers license. 

Besides, Proud Americans will need that little red (or is it gold) star on their license in order to use it to get a domestic flight/plane or  to get into a Federal Building (can you say Jury Duty?) after October 1, 2020. 

So, quit your belly aching about illegals and drivers licenses.    It's not like it letting them have a drivers license will fool anyone into thinking they are a US Citizen or Legally in the country... it won't have a little star on it.

REAL IDs are for actual citizens or those legally in the US.... regular old drivers licenses are for anyone.     I'm hoping you have a little red (or gold?) star on your license....

My Washington State enhanced driver's license which I was told qualifies as REAL ID doesn't have a star of any color on it.

What indicates to the TSA that you are a citizen or are legally here??   

(I'd complain.  I think all the States should have agreed to have a special little star on their REAL IDs....  Think about how confusing it will be at US airports when the TSA people have to learn how to recognize each State's REAL ID...

International driving licenses still exist. Not quite sure on who is in charge of managing the database for it and such so who knows on the privacy issues. And it's all voluntary, with I guess the exception of the Vietnam war - though it sounds like it was less "National ID" and more "following international law even though we're going to war".

If they have a driver's license then they are registered, if they are registered they can buy insurance.  They hit me I can go after either them or their insurance if I have identifying information. 

It makes sense because unless you are going to attempt to figure out a way to ban anyone who is not a citizen from EVER getting behind the wheel of ANY car and proceeding to drive then I would think you'd want that person licensed.

The REAL ID is a sly way to identify Citizens and non Citizens who are here legally using an 'everyday' piece of identification. I'm pretty sure the majority of American Citizens who currently fly ONLY domestically probably don't have a Passport.

I have an expired Passport (I got my first passport 10 years ago - in order to attend a destination wedding in Jamaica). I don't usually fly for vacations/trips. I'm a homebody. but I do have relatives in Florida, Texas, New Mexico - and I have flown to visit them.  And I can see myself doing so again in the future. I don't really see myself flying outside the US.   After 10/01/2010 - if I didn't get a REAL ID OR get a Passport - I'd have trouble flying to Florida to visit my relatives. Both pieces of ID indicate that I'm an American Citizen.

Drivers licenses no longer just indicate that I'm legally eligible to drive a car in a particular state AND my current address and some other info about me (gender, age, hieght and weight, if you are an organ donor, and if you need glasses to drive).  It identifies you as an American Citizen or Legally in America.

If you have to renew your license and you are a citizen or legally in America WHY would you not get a REAL ID and not have to carry your passport/other documentation with you on a daily basis?  In a few years the only people with just plain drivers licenses (not a REAL ID drivers license) will be anyone who cannot prove they are Citizens or here legally.

The REAL ID is a sly way to identify Citizens and non Citizens who are here legally using an 'everyday' piece of identification. I'm pretty sure the majority of American Citizens who currently fly ONLY domestically probably don't have a Passport.

I have an expired Passport (I got my first passport 10 years ago - in order to attend a destination wedding in Jamaica). I don't usually fly for vacations/trips. I'm a homebody. but I do have relatives in Florida, Texas, New Mexico - and I have flown to visit them.  And I can see myself doing so again in the future. I don't really see myself flying outside the US.   After 10/01/2010 - if I didn't get a REAL ID OR get a Passport - I'd have trouble flying to Florida to visit my relatives. Both pieces of ID indicate that I'm an American Citizen.

Drivers licenses no longer just indicate that I'm legally eligible to drive a car in a particular state AND my current address and some other info about me (gender, age, hieght and weight, if you are an organ donor, and if you need glasses to drive).  It identifies you as an American Citizen or Legally in America.

If you have to renew your license and you are a citizen or legally in America WHY would you not get a REAL ID and not have to carry your passport/other documentation with you on a daily basis?  In a few years the only people with just plain drivers licenses (not a REAL ID drivers license) will be anyone who cannot prove they are Citizens or here legally. 

I got my REAL ID several months ago. Pretty easy process. Figure out which documents you need to bring with you and you're all set.

I got mine last month. I had an additional step I had to take. I figured out which documents I needed and then had to purchase one of them. Six weeks later when it arrived, I was set.

I think one document many folks don't have is an original embossed/stamped copy of their birth certificate.

Back around 2013 I ordered a copy of my birth certificate from the city where I was born. I thought I would need it to apply for Social Security as I was turing 62 in a couple of months. But even applying for SS was simple. I applied on-line; God knows the government knew EVERYTHING about me. Took less than two minutes to apply.

Yep.  I had to get my Birth Certificate and SS card from my safe deposit box.  I gathered up the other stuff they wanted (bills, bank statement, paycheck stub) and then spent the day at the DMV waiting in lines.  (it took alittle over 4 hours from the time I hit the doors at the DMV to the time I walked out the doors.)    

There was some question about my 55 year old Birth Certificate - since they couldn't seem to find my name on it and insisted that it was my Mom's Birth Certificate.  Once I pointed out MY NAME it was still confusing.   My middle name spelled out on it.   None of my other documents have my middle name spelled out.   My SS card just has an initial.   I don't use my middle name or initial.  None of my names are all that popular.  I suspect I'm the only "my name" in the database.  Anyway.  it got OKd and I got a real id.      

So, now the DMV has an image of my Birth Certificate and my SS card and a bank statement and my paycheck stub all stored and linked together  in one convenient place!   They scanned the documents.  I almost said "NO! you can't do that!!! I don't want a REAL ID!!"..... but I didn't.    I'm hoping their database(s) are secure.      I should probably get LifeLock or something now.
