OMG I've been to White Island. Walked where these people walked.

Wow! And, no one had any idea it was about to erupt? Someone dropped the ball...

Wow! And, no one had any idea it was about to erupt? Someone dropped the ball... Well, it is known to be an active volcano. I think going there was dangerous.

Yes, they warn you when you sign up for the trip that it is an active volcano. You sign waivers and get protective masks, hard hats and instructions on "what to do if the volcano erupts".

People want their danger story to tell at home.

The place was fascinating. We went to visit despite the (what we assumed at the time was minimal) danger.

The videos are crazy. The guy being at the crater just 20-30 minutes before it blew. Insane.
Though I kinda wonder what helmets are supposed to do in a volcano.

Travel is suppose to be a "life changing" experience, it's not suppose to happen this way. So many people/families effected by those who died but those who survived as well.

Yeah, though it seems it's the super-heated ash/steam that was really the problem. At least with this eruption.

"New Zealand has ordered 1,292 square feet of skin to treat patients injured in Monday's volcanic eruption on White Island, authorities said Wednesday.
A total of 47 people were on White Island, off the coast of North Island, when the eruption occurred. Eight people have been confirmed dead, and more than 20 others are currently hospitalized in critical condition. Search and recovery operations are continuing for those still missing and presumed dead on the island.
The skin is now needed to treat patients severely injured by the volcanic ash and gas. On Tuesday, medical officials said 27 people in hospital had burns to at least 30% of their bodies and many have inhalation burns that require airway support. Every burns unit in the country is at full capacity.
"We currently have (skin) supply, but are urgently sourcing additional supplies to meet the demand for dressing and temporary skin grafts," said Peter Watson of the District Health Boards on Wednesday. "We anticipate that we will require an additional 1.2 million square centimeters (1,292 square feet) of skin for the ongoing needs of the patients."...

Oh dear, eight? I'm assuming this means two more succumbed to their injuries since I don't think it's been deemed safe enough to search the island yet.

I'm not liking the slow drip of information regarding this tragedy. This happened in a country where the dead are counted, so why are we still being coy about the number of missing and presumed dead? I keep reading articles about this tragedy and they all refuse to calculate this number.
Why is counting the missing so difficult? This disaster did not occur in an isolated corner of the country.

I don't think they are. I've consistently heard for the last day they think 8 are still on the island but presumed dead after flying over the island. Why they're keeping the presumed death count separate from the known I don't know. Maybe it's a New Zealand thing? Maybe something to do with them not having identified all the ones they were able to rescue off the island? I read an article that stated 2 of the 8 on the island were from New Zealand and presumably the guides. Which makes sense since someone that made it off the island said each group had two guides. I'm a little astonished it's only 8 as I would have guessed it was more based on that photo right before the eruption.

I'm pretty sure they know the number of people involved. They just didn't know who is who at the point when most of these reports were made.
Maybe they haven't identified everyone who made it off the island OR haven't contacted their next of kin. Perhaps next of kin can request that their loved one's name NOT be made public?
I would assume there was quite a bit of chaos as the survivors were triaged and sent to all the various hospitals. I suspect it might take a while to figure out who is who and where they are and then contact their next of kin. I know I wouldn't want to find out a family member was badly hurt/dead from a TV screen. And I see alot of new spewing TV screens on a daily basis - there's several along my commute and then the TV I pass when I walk into the office (in the 'business lounge'). I swear the number of TVs with news/advertisements in public/semipublic places has reached a creepy SciFi level...

I read a statement from the tour company saying they were missing 2 guides. The two new deaths were young boys. Age 16 and 13. Their parents are among the missing and presumed dead.
