Looks like Trump is still doing well with farmers. I spent October driving a Combine in the Midwest, the corn yields tat I saw were consistently average or above. Then at night we would see TV News that kept telling us how bad we were doing??

With your guy informing us all that the media is the "enemy of the people", and that that same media is "fake news", I suggest you only watch Fox, which according to one of your cohort here, in the ONLY truthful media outlet. Problem solved.

Phil,
Please compare and contrast the Obama GM bailout and the Trump BigAg bailout, which appears to be about double. Do you believe the massive increase in the deficit is of any concern now that a Republican is doing it?

From what I read in our local paper which I am sure is run by deranged liberals is that close to 40% of a farmer's income currently comes from the bail out. When do we start getting pissed over farmers receiving 40% of their income in the form of government handouts? Or are we too busy judging what is in people's grocery carts to notice?
FYI I don't begrudge the farmers, it's not like they made the decision to start a trade war. I just find it interesting what people consider to be a "waste" of tax dollars.

Well... but a very large percentage of them were whole heartedly on the MAGA train. They may not have started the actual trade war, but they sure as heck sowed it

""F arm Bankruptcies Rise Again
Chapter 12 Filings Increase 24% Compared to Year-Ago Levels""
You have to really lean on the numbers to come up with that headline. Eg, Iowa has about 90,000 farms - of those 90,000, about 24 filed bk last year. And that 24 is 10 more than the year before - the 10 makes up a 24% increase in bk's. Maybe the real take-away is that 89,976 of the 90,000 farmers did not file bk?

"Farm income" & "farmer income" are 2 different things. Who is benefitting from "farm income"?...only the big conglomerates who are owned by foreigners or other large entities? Seeing yields in one area doesn't tell the whole story of the entire Midwest...especially with so much flooding & other bad weather conditions this past spring. Other posters here are correct...farm bankruptcies & farmer suicides are both up. There is no accounting for farmers & their votes...DT also cut how much ethanol will be produced...he didn't just destroy the China market for soybeans. And those who went with hemp this year...there seems to be a glut in the market currently. I haven't seen or heard any news on the big crops down here...cotton & peanuts, so they must be doing ok. But I wonder what will happen to the pecan market?

From Swamp's link....don't look at just one area...look at the whole, that tells the story, not just small areas...

If subsidizing farmers on the country’s credit card is yielding such a spectacular life for farmers today why don’t we double it? The GOP doesn’t care about the deficit/debt anymore so why not?

From what I've been reading Nebraska farmers are doing all right for now but are concerned about the timing and if payments are going to continue. They don't want to wonder where their next 40% is going to come from indefinitely.
I still to this day don't understand why ANYONE thinks a New York reality TV star/real estate mogul actually gives two shits about a Midwest farmer and that all this trade deal crap with China is about what is best for them and not himself/the people lining his political pockets.

""DT also cut how much ethanol will be produced.."" That was Obama in Nov 2013. As for bk's and suicides being 'up', the increase a negligible change from normal or previous years (altho any increase is unfortunate). That is media 'sensationalism' ( the denominator is 90,000, not 24).
"""especially with so much flooding & other bad weather conditions this past spring."" Yeah, I saw that first hand during harvest, driving a Combine into about 18 inches of mud on a side-hill can ruin your day.

Didn't GM have to pay back the LOANS (the bailout)? Didn't they do that?
Do the Farmers have to pay back their bail out money? I don't think they do. Isn't that socialism (or communism) ?
Maybe that's why the Republicans were so upset with the GM bailout - it's wasn't a 'free be' ??

Perhaps, Phil, you might do well to specify the type of agriculture? I know I'm a dumb music major that's gotten no good math skills because I'm 40+ and the schools have gone to shit, but it does seem like WI is losing more than a handful of farms.. Here's another article: The headline is "‘Struggling to tread water’: Dairy farmers are caught in an economic system with no winning formula." Please explain how struggling to tread water is the exact same thing as doing well. I'm dumb, remember, so you'll have speak realllly slowly on this one.

‘Doing well’ are the larger agri-biz interests slurping up taxpayer cash in a Repo-Con tariff swindle while small family farms are going banco and farmers are killing themselves. When the dust settles there will be more acreage controlled by the big boys and less family farms.

Did you read your own link? Apparently not. “There are financial issues out there and stress,” said USDA Chief Economist Robert Johansson, despite the huge federal transfer of cash to farmers and ranchers. Farm bankruptcy rates, while low, are rising and so are indicators such as the debt-to-asset ratio, a measure of solvency, Johansson told USDA’s radio news service over the weekend. Farm debt is rising more rapidly than the value of farm assets in percentage terms, although farm equity is stable, said the USDA report. The fact that you were driving a combine and saw lots of corn means nothing.

Last year I guess a lot of farmers had presold crops. This year I don't have a clue. The farmers around here are very closed mouth, always have been, as hubs said they just say they are poor. Yet we see new cars, trucks, and swimming pools. Hubs says those good years they had they spent, not all of them of course. But a couple we know said they haven't gotten a dime from any bailout and they both farm about 3000 acres or so. One also couldn't plant 500 of his acres to wet. Both basically inherited their farms from parents so likely all paid for, but still a few bad years have got to hurt. And some have a couple more family members in it so has to stretch the income a lot.

"""Farm bankruptcy rates, while low, are rising and so are indicators such as the debt-to-asset ratio, a measure of solvency """ Not necessarily a solvency metric in farming - in real life, the cost-of-money is the big factor. Whenever you can leverage your land at only 4% or 5%, you load up on cheap debt (and add land assets, upgrade the machinery, etc. - and you always bid on adjoining fields, they may only come up for sale once in a lifetime.

Top 1% receiving an average of $180,000 while the bottom 80% are getting $5000. That’s your bailout metric.
