Man killed by device he created to shoot anyone who entered his door A Maine man was killed by a device he made for the front door of his home, police say. Ronald Cyr, 65, called 911 on the evening of Thanksgiving Day and reported he had been shot, the Van Buren Police Department said. When officers arrived, they discovered a device on the front door of the man's home that was designed to fire a handgun if anyone attempted to enter, the department said. Police found other unknown devices around the house and contacted the state's bomb squad. www.ctvnews.ca/world/man-killed-by-device-he-created-to-shoot-anyone-who-entered-his-door-1.4710258

Nature seems to have stepped in to keep this individual from doing any more stupid things.

Do you suppose he came home drunk? Or, just plain forgot about the trap he'd set up?

Maybe he thought the booby trap would recognize him and not deploy.
Sort of like an Air Force acquaintance, who, when we were stationed in Berlin in 1976, decided she wanted to visit Beirut because she had read it was "the Paris of the Middle East." Lebanon was in the middle of a civil war in 1976, and much of Beirut was in ruins, and the parts that weren't already in ruins were in the process of being turned into ruins because, well, civil war. When we pointed this out to her, she didn't see it as a problem, "That doesn't have anything to do with me. I'm an American, and besides, I'm just going as a tourist." (She never went because she was unable to get a visa to travel to Beirut,)
So maybe he thought the explosives would be able to distinguish him from someone entering with criminal intent.

I’m thinking he probably didn’t have a lot of friends just dropping by.

It must be horrible to live in that kind of fear day after day.
Or maybe he's got a drug operation going on?
What motivates someone to booby trap their home?

A few motivations.
Being stalked and harassed by someone. Multiple break ins. Drug ridden neighborhood.
Pissed off someone in organized crime.

I looked up Van Buren, ME, since I'd never heard of it. it is in the middle of nowhere - north of Houlton, along the Canadian border on route 1. Houlton is the northern end of I95, if that helps anyone. in my experience with people living in the boonies like this, many are overly paranoid in general. sometimes by the way they grew up with limited world exposure, and sometimes it is the reverse- that they seek out these remote locations in order to limit their interactions with anyone else.

Probably read In Cold Blood!

I was about to add toxic paranoia to the list of possibilities. It is difficult for people who just have the normal complement of mental quirks to appreciate the sheer bat-shit craziness that paranoia can bring to those who start down that rabbit hole. One of the saddest elements of it is that even if that person has non-paranoid family or friends, nothing they can say to try to persuade the paranoid person otherwise will be convincing because they will come to be seen as part of the "conspiracy." No idea if that was the issue with this gentleman, but it wouldn't be surprising.
