Tried an awesome new cranberry sauce at a potluck today, it had pineapple, cherries and walnuts. Will definitely be adding that to our dinner next year.
Hope everyone had a great day!

The dinner party was a rousing success! Everybody just left, and it's 12h17. The kitchen is a disaster area and I'm just going to wash all the glassware. Will do the rest tomorrow. I'm tired.

Just so y'all know--the pre-cooked dinner from Cracker Barrel not only passed muster, but it's going to become Thanksgiving dinner forevermore. The only thing I tweaked was the cranberries because I've always made brandied cranberries (cranberries for people who hate them). I had no idea what we'd end up with, but put them in a 6x8 glass baking dish and gave 'em a coupla glugs of brandy, sealed the dish with foil, baked at 350 for an hour and a half. I thought they were as good as mine. Everybody else (all former cranberry haters) said they were okay but not as good as mine. Huh? The gravy was good but the crew complained that it wasn't the same color as mine. I told them that the "proof of the pudding is in the eating." Not the same color? What's that got to do with anything if it tastes good? They weren't a bit shy about packing it in, and we have just enough left for supper tomorrow. One more thing. A pecan pie and a pumpkin pie were included with the dinner. Both very good and didn't have the inch-thick crusts that commercial pies usually have. A splash of Gravy Master or Kitchen Bouquet in the gravy should correct the color issue with the gravy in the future.

tskeeter, I made a mental note of Kitchen Bouquet yesterday, and when I took Maggiecat for her pedicure this morning was going to run into Kroger and get some. Some sorry SOB erased my mental note and for the life of me couldn't remember what it was called until after I got home. This time, it's on the grocery list on my phone.

Last Sunday, we had Thanksgiving with our children. Turkey (cooked in the smoker) Green Bean casserole (made from scratch) mashed potatoes gravy (knorr's) roasted carrots dinner rolls from costco because I got lazy pecan pie pumpkin pie apple pie wondering if you did this how I did it. I had to make the french fried onions as the store was out and made my own cream of mushroom sauce for vegan - is that what you encompass from scratch? I really do not enjoy doing the french fried onions. I've done it a few times, and they are good - but I prefer not to see the amount of oil! and what a mess! fresh green beans that I blanch before putting in the sauce fresh bell pepper make my own mushroom cream but it's not vegan I did buy the fried shallots as I had surgery on my right arm and did need to alleviate some of the prep

My SIL made a hot crab dip served in a bread bowl that would have been all I needed to eat, along with a slice of pumpkin pie. We have SO much leftover!

We are having our family Thanksgiving today in a couple of hours. My sis is hosting & providing turkey, with the rest of us bringing sides.
I am bringing stuffing based on the classic Betty Crocker recipe. but substituting soft whole wheat bread and substituting some of the butter with hot chicken stock.
I am also bringing a dish inspired by Cracker Barrel's fried apples which we had recently while on a trip. Saute apple slices and fresh cranberries in butter, throw in some very ripe sliced pears and a sprinkling of brown sugar for extra sweet, add freshly ground cinnamon, and cloves. Add the pecans last for crunch.

Ham - for some reason for all holidays we have turkey and ham both. We do too in my family. Growing up dad preferred ham and mom preferred turkey and we were a family of 6 so mom got both. My sister still does this, but years I have done the meal on my own I just do turkey. We always did same for Christmas, but as adults my other sister had started doing prime rib. The holidays are too close to eat the same thing IMO, though it never bothered me as a kid.
