My wife will be home in about an hour. The first thing she will do is turn on lights. She might, thought doesn't very often anymore, ask why I am sitting in the dark. In the house I grew up in, leaving lights on when you didn't need them got you yelled at. I learned it was safer to not turn them on in the first place unless absolutely necessary.
I have a day of the week pill box that I fill each Sunday. In the morning I the pills out and tactilely aline them by size. It is easier that way to make sure I don't miss one in the dark kitchen.

My DH says the overhead lights hurt his eyes. I think it's really the same thing as you have billisonboard. His dad was notoriously cheap and would occasionally flip the AC breaker so they couldn't turn it on if he didn't want them to.
