I just saw an article listing stocking stuffers for "under $50." Fifty bucks (or a bit less) for stocking stuffers?
I thought stocking stuffers were little, inexpensive things. Inexpensive like a few bucks.
Am I that far out of touch?

No. Just merchants trying to normalize inordinate spending.

I remember getting oranges in our stockings! Yup. The orange was okay but getting a tangerine? Now that was a big deal. This was during and just after the War so they were expensive and hard to find. Among my favorite things were butter rum Lifesavers and a new box of crayons. I don't remember when Lifesavers candy "books" came out, but I do remember that they only cost $.25, and when we drew names in elementary school I always hoped that whoever got my name would give me one of those. It was a solid deal because a roll cost $.05, but there were 10 rolls in a book.

We used to get a book of Lifesavers, maybe a barrette or socks, and fruit in our stocking. My sister is big into stockings, and she usually gives her kids a DVD, socks, hair clips and or books.
$50? Really?

I forgot about barrettes. Got those and new shoelaces. The Walk of the Penguin Mich , DVDs hadn't been invented yet, nor tapes, obviously, but I did request a 78 record from time to time. That was a whole Christmas present and wouldn't have fit in a stocking! They cost $.98.

We used to get fruit and nuts with the shells on in our stockings along with life savers and a small toy. We usually got one or two larger gifts under the tree, usually a doll or game or book. My mom was a single mom of 3, and we got a lot more from our grandparents. The few years we lived with my grandparents we got bigger items like a bike.

When I was 12, I got a fancy embroidered tablecloth at Christmas for my "hope chest". The fuck? No 12 year old wants a tablecloth for Christmas! In any case, I had no intentions of getting married. I was going to be a famous artist living in SoHo. I was pissed!

I gave/give my kids 'stuff to keep them busy' in thier stocking, which we opened in christmas eve. A paperback book, maybe a coloring book with crayons, a few pieces of special candy, a small puzzle or game. That kind of thing. Kept them busy and from whining.

$50 for a stocking stuffer?!? We made an effort to keep gifts under that amount. And we only got one or two gifts. There weren't piles of packages under the tree. Stockings were for candy. And Cracker Jacks.

My father as a kid wanted a pony for Christmas. Allegedly, per my grandfather and father both with smiles on their faces, my grandfather put horse poop in my father's Christmas stocking and told dad Christmas morning the horse ran away.

DH's stocking can get a little pricey because it usually contains things like a bottle of whiskey and small awkwardly shaped gifts I don't want to wrap. I prefer it that way though because if I'm going to the drug store and have a whole stocking to stuff it does add up for very little.

I'm glad that my culture(s) doesn't have any Christmas stockings. Stockings and Christmas presents probably would make me go bonkers!

We do the same thing-- small awkwardly shaped gifts that we don't want to wrap go in the stockings. Plus, razor blade refills, that cost a fortune. Sometimes cologne. Lottery scratch offs. The stocking is often the favorite for us adults. I often put new socks in the kids' stockings. Stockings for the stocking. I just don't know what to put in there to fill it up.

Thanks for the reminder about scratch off tickets. I put them on my list of small stuff for the kids/g'kids.

I think DH put my diamond earrings in the very bottom of my stocking the year I got those. I always put a new shower pouf in his. That takes up room. The rest is candy and whatever small things I've found.
My gift cards are usually in mine.

Honestly, stockings in our house can hold the most expensive gifts because that's where the small items go. For instance, this year I got DD tickets to see Frozen (broadway). The tickets will go in her stocking. They were expensive!
However, I certainly wouldn't call it a 'stuffer.'
Things I use as stocking stuffers: chapstick toothbrush dental floss small candies and chocolates scratch offs socks travel size balms, lotions, other toiletries nail files and nail polish starbuck gift cards

That sounds like something my parents would have done. They made a huge deal about my "car" for my 16th birthday. They wrapped a box that looked like it would fit a key. Imagine my "excitement" when I opened a box in front of everyone that contained a Matchbox car. And, that was my gift... Another example of parenthood were I did things much different with my own kids.

Stockings are a big deal in our house. That said, the per-item cost isn't high - chapstick, underwear, fishing lures, money clip, candy, etc....but it adds up! I can remember when my mom put perfume in our stockings when we were teenagers and she made a comment about how expensive the stockings were getting.

Until Halmark offered a Porsche in their mini ornaments one year . Still one of his favorite Xmas ornaments and a present he talks about regularly →pointing out he got a new, fully paid for Porsche. Mind you we never gave any gifts that totalled over a $150/year so he didn't actually expect a car of any kind
ETA: the year after he added a Ferrari to his wish list with "full size" in brackets after it. He may still be wanting one I don't know, but the car he bought a few years back was a station wagon since he now has two little guys of his own...

We also got oranges. My Dad had a tree in the back yard, so, it didn't seem very special. My mom would put pantyhose in our stockings, because that was a thing.
With my kids I stick to candy and pencils/pens. They will sometimes find things for each other. My husband is super into stocking stuffers. He always puts like football trading cards and shit. Psst, you are sweet, but no one cares.

We don't do stockings. We do St. Nicks instead. Here's how I think it will shape out #1: iTunes card, GC for lunches (open campus), Assorted MGT things
#2 iTunes card, movie GC, head phones, A book #3iTunes card, Build a bear (wants to take #4 to get them together and costco sale), bath stuff #4 Build a bear GC, bath stuff, maybe some playdoh or something. I'll probably come in at $50/kids, and I generally stay away from needs as much as possible.

When DS was a teenager, Santa put condoms in his stocking.

We do stockings in our house and I use it as an opportunity to buy everyone staples like deodorant, socks, lip balm, etc. I'm always appreciate when I don't have to run out for shampoo, lol.

I've seen a Listerine mouthwash commercial a few times and at the end of the commercial, the announcer pitches what must be a new product of theirs, called Ready Tabs, which look like portable mouthwash mints, and says, "they make great stocking stuffers." Who has the cojones to put those in someone's holiday stocking? Why would anyone want to say to a loved one, "Ho, ho,Ho and hey, you rock, Uncle Al, but your breath smells like a dead possum. Fix that, wouldya?"
