Homeless people have become a major issue where I live. They used to keep to themselves for the most part. Now a lot of them have attitude, as if it's everyone else's responsibility to take care of them. I'm sorry they're homeless. But that doesn't give them the right to harass, or bother people. You have a point regarding bothering folks....however, if you or I were homeless , hungry, smelling, cold or suffering from the heat...I am sure we too would be bothering folks for some help...just saying. There has to be a answer ...there is a epidemic out there...When the leader of the country spends over $100 million for vacations..golf...when the country has given the POTUS a get away with all the perks and folks to cater to the man and family... When a fighter jet can cost over $150 million each...Aircraft carrier over 13 BILLION , with out the planes to fly off of it... seems these folks have a point in asking gov't for help...asking u and I for a few coins.

A lot of the homeless my DD1 sees self medicate mental illness with drugs and alcohol (add hunger and low self esteem). No way they are thinking clearly. Thankfully, they know to be as nice as they can be when someone is wearing scrubs. Still, it's a struggle for them. The demons can be strong.

When I lived in Colorado, I rode the bus to work. This was a small van type bus that only ran in the mornings and at the end of the work day. I was usually the only rider.
Because of that, I would talk to the bus driver. After his divorce, he had been homeless. He talked about how he sunk in to depression and started drinking. He learned not to stay in shelters because what few belongings he had would get stolen. He told me if I wanted to help a homeless person to buy them a meal.
Somehow he pulled himself out of it and got a job. I hope that is still true.

Do you really give every homeless person you run into "a few coins"? -just curious. I think the way they ask makes a huge difference. Asking nicely/politely is way different from demanding, or even asking in an aggressive, or rude tone.

They ask people not to feed manatees because they become dependent. If you make it easy to not help yourself, you won’t.

People with mental health issues may not be able to ask nicely.
Again, be kind. It could be you or your loved one.

TOM is very right. I give readily to the shelters and firstbank. And the clinic my DD1 works at. She passes out contact cards for her clinic. What's strange now is to visit her, walk down the street and drunk/drugged/strangers say hi, raise a hand to say hi, or mutter as we walk by. I mean ... she KNOWS these people. Just....different.

People with mental health issues may not be able to ask nicely. Again, be kind. It could be you or your loved one. I'm kind. Hell, it could be me. . I did give one guy a pillow once. Have given food and other items. I don't like being treated rudely. (Doesn't mean I'm going to be rude.)

Nobody is saying giving them money for drugs. There are other ways to help.
It could be you or a loved one. Remember that.

While studying for her undergrad, my friend's daughter was interning at a homeless shelter and came to know quite a few of them really well. She invited them to her graduation and those who could, came to attend. It was really nice to see that they made an effort, and that she had in some ways touched something in their lives. My DH buys food for a man we see here. I don't know if he uses drugs, but every time my DH gives him food, he asks if he had enough for himself before taking it.

A few DD1 knows are Iraqi war vets. That knowledge is really hard to stomach. They just can't people anymore. My cousin's son spent his first two years at home in his parents' basement. He saw some horrible things. I've been told one that would have sent me over the deep end. I can't imagine what else he saw. I was happy to see that he got married this past fall. I hope he did get help along the way, but those first two years, nobody saw him. I was at the house more than once and had I not known he lived in the basement, I would not have known anyone else was there.
