Seriously one of THE FUNNIEST threads I've read in a very long time. I was laughing so hard I was crying. For a minute, I thought I was over on EE but you folks have shown that you have what it takes to hilariously derail a thread with the best of them (EE). haapai: I know of the type of behavior you speak and I understand why you likened it to prostitutes or escorts sucking up to their dates, and, in the end, when you really examine the boss/employee relationship it is also a matter of exploitation. But, since social mores have essentially fallen off and folks can unashamedly use Tinder for a open booty call rather than pay for one, I think the younger crowd may have missed your point. At any rate, disingenuous, insincere, flattery of any form is revolting.

So talking and laughing at work makes us whores? Good to know. No, but if done in a certain way, it certainly reminds me of what whores sound like.
Whores laugh at you often??

i'm not quite 50 and I admit to laughing...a lot! And I definitely don't have a quiet laugh. Since I'm in a C suite and laugh with people at all levels, I can assure you that I'm not sucking up. I am just one of those people that love life and love to find humor in almost anything. Admittedly, my zest for life probably got me reprimanded in my younger days. Now there is only one person in my company that I report to and luckily, he also loves to laugh. I do know how and when to act professional and will do so when required. But I wouldn't last at a company that I couldn't joke and laugh at. Life's too short to be miserable... I guess that makes me a middle-aged whore! A chunky one, at that!

Definitely go to HR and discuss this with them.

So much this. Except I do get people who are so Self absorbed and intolerant that they resort to name calling over anything and nothing at all. I think this perspective needs more attention.

Changing the term from whore to sex worker doesn't make it better.
Calling coworkers you don't like lazy, stupid, asshats....we've all been there.
Calling women whores, sluts, prostitutes, or sex workers because you don't like them is different. Can't you see that? Jumping to the conclusion that they are using their womanly wiles to manipulate, get what they want, to take advantage of men...it's disgusting. It plays into a stereotype and mindset that is so accepted and pervasive and undermines women everywhere. We're supposed to be past this. Womans entire existence shouldnt be reduced to her relationship to men or what she can (or isn't providing).
If you don't like someone, don't like them. Hate them even. But there isn't any reason to get into whore name calling except to belittle women in the worst way. Think about it- we belittle the women sex workers regardless of situation. With almost no thoughts to the men who hire (at best), or much worse groom, abuse, and pimp out. That is why this thread is so incredibly disturbing.

Not all of the irritating sycophantic coworkers that I spoke of were are female. Not all of the loud sycophantic sex workers that I have encountered were female either. (I spent a good chunk of my childhood in the third world and a good chunk of my early twenties in gay bars back when they were almost always located in red-light districts. I may have seen some things that most people haven't.)
But I'll take your advice and bury the analogy. Apparently, my experience being around sex workers is unusual as is my willingness to speak of it. Pointing out the similarity in the behaviors will only get me into trouble.

Let's be honest though, if you're someone who laughs at jokes or otherwise is friendly to people around you, you're probably willing to take money in exchange for sex. They're basically one and the same. That's why I'm not friendly to coworkers, I don't want them to think I'm trying to get them to hire me for sex.

Hating someone requires far more energy than I'm willing to expend.
