The new Governor of a red state is a Democrat! And to me it comes down to one thing: self preservation!!!
It is all good and well to be a Republican until their policies start affecting you directly! And the current GOP governor that has been ousted has gone after: - teachers retirement plan - public employees retirement plan - healthcare (yes can you believe it, they care about getting healthcare).
The moment it start affecting them and their money, Republicans suddenly start embracing Democrats ideals.
Remind me of the Republican mother bitching about how she hates Obamacare and should be abolished but in the same sentence grateful for the affordable insurance her son and family was able to get (but she thought Trump was responsible for that...oh the Irony! ).

It was interesting watching the KY returns last night. The rural, low population areas are still very solidly pro-Trump, like in 2016, and the urban areas are still solidly pro-Dem, like in 2016.
The difference was the suburbs, which went more Dem than before, and that's what turned the election to the Dems.
Also very interesting - VA went for the dems in the House, Senate and Governor.

dj may have some insight in this race for us. The fact is it was a Governor who was not popular with teachers and parents of children in the school sytem. He was down 20% in earlier polls, so to make it close, is a surprise. The fact is the Republicans swept all the state level on the Excutive races other than the Governor's seat even electing a black Republican to the A.G. position. And you also have the son of a former popular Governor who won the seat. Kentucky likes their dynasties as much as Massachusetts does with the Kennedy's.

No, KY likes the Medicaid expansion and Bevin's goal was to take that away. And if the DEMS were smart, they'd zone in on this issue, come up with something reasonable and blast away at Republicans for have 10 years to be the "party of healthcare" and not having any sort of plan. This is an issue that affects every single American. It was comical watching the race, he tried so hard to be like President Trump who campaigned pretty hard for him. And yeah, his remark about "a child was sexually assaulted today while the teachers were on strike" didn't sit well with.....well, anyone. Just like Trump though, right? Tell a baldfaced lie with no evidence to back it up.

The incumbent is a strong trumper. trump campaigned heavily for him. He still lost -to a Dem

high turnout makes it hard for the GOP.
that is the general rule.
my understanding is that this race had high turnout.

high turnout makes it hard for the GOP. that is the general rule. my understanding is that this race had high turnout. Watching the returns last night, when the GOPer was still ahead by about 5 points, the political wonk describing the returns said that, at that time, the largest area (around Louisville) was going blue, and only 21% of the vote was in. All the traditional blue areas (around cities) were voting in higher than average numbers, and suburbs were also, and going more blue than red.
Virginia was surprising, too - first time in 25 years the Dems are in charge of everything.

Virginia was a coin toss away from being blue in 2018. so I am not terribly surprised by this outcome.

Interesting spin on Fox news about how the loss in Kentucky is good for Republicans.
