However....there is also New Haven Style and for those who have eaten such... {They are all over the country..remember Yale University has been in the city from almost the start of the country and the # 1 rated shop started in 1925..folks moved all over} and after conducting a poll of Connecticut readers, the # one rated shop was {no surprise to this poster} Peppis. They were rated as best pizza in USA in last few years...which is saying something. Where ever u are living and think your favorite Pizza shop is the best..I am sure it's good but in comparison...Sorry...no comparison. For me, now living in South Florida, my days of enjoying their pies is over...However, occasionally my son posts pictures of the pies he and my grandkids are dining on...to die for. If anyone is passing through the State, interstate...do your self a favor and google direction..get off interstate as u pass through New Haven and have lunch or dinner at Peppis..Very easy and close to the exit..u will thank me for the suggestion..My favorite is the Bacon Pizza but all styles...as said..to die for. ===================================== www.courant.com/ctnow/food-drink/hc-ctnow-pizza-showdown-connecticuts-number-one-pizza-20191031-jcsjre2yabaxhpogcz6r4fu4q4-story.html===================================== Suggest click on: pepispizzeria.com

I think you meant - Pepe's Pizzait is tasty, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's the best out there. just my opinion.

I don't really go by those articles. I saw one for best Mexican restaurants in all 50 states and the ones from KS and MO were both local. They were also both chicken restaurants and didn't serve Mexican food. I've been to both and they are just ok. There are plenty of other places here that are actually Mexican restaurants and have much better food.

It's not winning any awards, but the food was da bomb.

That looks like pretty standard pizza. I'm sure it is good.
My favorite is the wood fired type with fresh, non-traditional ingredients. I have been told it is more like pizza in Italy. Maybe I am just burned out on basic pizza.

I miss New Haven pizza. Had the pleasure of dining on it for thirteen years.

Myself and several others from work went to a local Mexican with pretty good food for lunch one time when two of the waiters, one carrying a tray filled with meals, got into a fist fight among the diners. Plates, food, and fists were flying everywhere.

There is Sallys on the same street...just sold and I believe will be franchised...was a relative to pepe...friendly the two families and Modern also in New Haven...exceptional...but have eaten at Pepe's all my life and have never tasted anything better where ever I have lived. Granted some object to the thin crust..the charing of the pie due to the high temperature , coal fired ovens...are hotter , also Pies not completely perfectly round...as u say your opinion....we all have one.

Personally I think all pizza is good and hard to screw up, so any thin/medium crust pizza is going to rank between average and good. To me, I'd bet you could give me 10 pizza joints around my house and throw in the New Haven one and one wouldn't be all that much better than the rest.
Chicago Deep Dish isn't for everyone, but it makes more of an impact because it's unique and (for some people) it's head and shoulders ahead of the average pizza they've had. To me, there's nothing unique about a NY style pizza so that doesn't even enter the conversation.

In any article about the best pizza in the country, you will usually find three New Haven pizza joints in the top 15: Modern Apizza, Sally's Apizza and Pepe's Pizzeria.

" ----------------------------------------Very, very respectfully Ryan.... your wrong. The only thing I can say if u are unable to ever get there to try...when thousands of folks go out of their way to get to some place as they do at this outlet...with outside lines which are common...there must be extra special about the joint. When the new copies of their main store are as popular as the original... {they took apart a spare oven brick by brick to copy..down to the cast iron door so all outlets use same copied ovens plus same original recipe for ingredients and flour..} I suggest there is a special difference...Here I am miles away and am salivating over/for a bacon pizza I will never have again..{sigh} to the point of thinking , I will order a pizza tomorrow...{just ate and to late.. }

Sallys widow who was a fixture in the store in one of the booths passed about a year ago..decendents sold the store..really a whole in the wall for some millions..think three but don't hold me to it and believe going bto franchise. Two of Sally's relatives who worked the original, signed on as managers to Shepard the new outlets and new employees ...Possible in future will see "Sally's" Pizza in my neighborhood...will give it a try. One of their inventive recipes..since copied...was whole sliced tomatoes...only in season when summer native tomatoes are available..

Too funny. A co-worker is spending the weekend in the New Haven area. He is somewhat of a foodie, and, so, of course, yesterday(!) we talked New Haven pizza. He thinks Modern’s Eggplant Parm Pizza is THE best pizza on the planet.
As for Pepe’s, we LOVE the seasonal tomato pie — although any of their pizzas are among the best in the U.S. But, Pepe’s has tried to expand in to the Boston area and for some reason, Pepe’s at the Boston locations can not compare to their pizzas from the original Pepe’s (with the 2 hour wait and the drinks in tiny juice glasses). I think the years at the original location have “seasoned” the oven there that the new locations can’t reproduce. So, when in the New Haven area, we buy 5 or 6 partially baked Pepe’s pizzas and bring them home to freeze. Even re-heated, Pepe’s from the original location beats the Boston Pepe’s by a mile.
And, truth be told, I do crave a greasy Greek pizza now and then...
New York pizza to me is the big rectangular pans of fluffy doughed stuff — not really pizza IMHO.
As for Chicago deep dish, we did like it when we lived there for 8 years. We preferred Giordano’s. Another co-worker who is a native Chicagoan insists Gino’s East is the TRUE Chicago pizza.
Whatever. Pizza is one of those subjective opinions we will never all agree on, LOL.

I have never seen the "New York Style" description mean anything but a standard thin crust, which you can fold in half.

We call the rectangular pan of fluffy-doughed pizza “Sicilian” pizza and consider it New York-style, but, yup, the pie slices that you fold in half are New York-style, too, although isn’t that the universal generic pizza anyway?

I'd say NY style is a thinner crust, and usually larger pieces. and then that's not even including the bar pizzas that we get here on the South Shore. Sicilian is found everywhere, though, I guess I never considered it NY style.

And then there’s “skating rink” pizza (from open skate hours and high school hockey games). And “meh” on the correct New York style. I mean, it’s pizza from New York, not exactly something to brag about. 😜

Modern is one of the top three...outstanding...never had the pie u mentioned...actually a lot of those different toppings I consider California yuppy style..prefer the basic Italian style toppings...but that is me..and agree on your last statement. As far as the new openings, my som frequents their West Hartford outlet, has posted pictures of the Pizzas, raves about their product and has eaten at the original..Possible the Boston outlet management not up to the job..don't know if new outlets are company owned or franchised..thought all company owned and controlled
