I don't like seafood either....so double no go for me. I've never had Polenta so don't know. As for grits with fish or shrimp...we have a nearby restaurant that is starting to get nationwide recognition for it's grits & fish... www.jonahsfish.com/menu/My son & Japanese DIL ate there & said it was really good.

I've never had grits in my life. I just picked 3 "iconic" American delicacies. Not from my part of the Midwest. Cornmeal is usually just used in cornbread, corn muffins, and dusting the bottom of your pizza so it doesn't stick to the pan.

Mush is jelled, cooked corn meal...usually in the same shape as a Velveta...you slice it & fry it in bacon grease...then use syrup on it when it's served on your plate. This recipe is close to what we used to do when I was a kid... www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/fried-cornmeal-mush/Grits are pretty much the same except they aren't allowed to jell...they are more runny. A lot of folks will cut up a couple sunny side up or easy over eggs in their grits while others just add butter and some times cheese is added. I don't like grits. Think I only liked the mush due to the syrup that made it sweet. You can do the exact same thing with grits, and they taste much better. Pour cooked grits on a plate, but if fridge and they harden. Slice, fry up in bacon grease and cover with REAL maple syrup. IMO, the only way to make grits edible.

We never cooked the corn meal for 3 hrs....but we didn't make it as runny as grits either. DH is a "southern" boy so he likes grits...I've cooked them many times for him & any left over will be like mush.

There are all kinds of things one can do with corn besides making grits. Grits are a good temporary substitute when you run out of cat litter.

Think I only liked the mush due to the syrup that made it sweet. I didn't like grits myself until I visited a restaurant on Amelia Island GA that had grit cakes and shrimp. When I travel I try to eat the local specialties so I figured what the heck, at least I know I'll like the shrimp.
OMG it was a mouthful of heaven. They put two grit cakes (grits baked a little until they held a square shape) in a bowl and then covered with shrimp and andouille sausage in a sauce made primarily from cream and cheese. Had to be 10,000 calories per bowl but totally worth it.
Since then, I've tried other grit dishes. Grits are like baked potatoes, kind of blah when naked, but can be dressed up extravagantly by their toppings.

You REALLY need to learn how to recognize sarcasm. You cannot take everything here at face value. Sometimes it helps to notice how other people respond to a post before doing so yourself. That may help show the real intent. Your saying the post is just sarcasm?....Ok...I don't read it that way...I respond to the written word...don't hear tonal or facial expressions...so I guess I will keep responding to posts that way...like our President seems to be saying so many times...he was just joking...I don't buy it...u say it..u own it... dezi, let's put it this way. There are only three, maybe four posters here who do not side with your beliefs. You know who we are. If anyone else makes a post that looks like they are dissing democrats or praising Trump, they are using sarcasm.

There are all kinds of things one can do with corn besides making grits. Yep. Just the other day my wife made a new cold dish. Frito corn chips 15 oz whole kernal corn Miracle whip (or Mayo if you prefer) A little sour cream Shredded cheese of your preference Add some broccolli buds or maybe something else...... Chill in refrigerator and serve cold. Yummy!

Wow. I failed to see this thread is about a government shutdown until my post on the thread moved it to the top of the new thread list Yep, we got side tracked with grits. But those farmers are going to need more folks to eat grits or mush so they have a market for the corn that won't be going to ethanol! Happy...if you ever make it to Thomasville, Ga....try out Jonah's Fish & Grits. If it's a weekend, be prepared to wait in line. They have several dishes with other sea foods too.

Sorry V, don't buy that...there are new posters coming in and posting..I take whats printed as what the poster and post means...Getting to old to be able to understand the nuances...In fact I get personal PM's from a good friend here who is into all the nuances from time to time who clarifies my misrepresentations of some of the posts...keeps me honest.
