Of course, it dropped to just below $500k the next day (or the day after...) but I'm ok with that. My goal was to get there before I was 40, but I decided while I was 40 was good too. I made the updated goal I can quit obsessively checking my accounts daily now, and go back to mostly ignoring them for a while. Next goal is $1 million net worth. I'm hoping that will only take a few years, but who knows.

And the great thing about accumulating that much is that the interest, dividends and increase in value of the investments all work together to increase your portfolio. It's like magic! Congratulations!

Congratulations. Now, cash it in and buy yourself five to ten rental properties and let the equity grow while enjoying near tax-free income. Oh, and if you didn't know- you can buy rental properties inside of a self-directed IRA. Talk to a good CPA-- but if you go that route, you can't have the income- you can have it, you have to keep it in the IRA and invest it. www.thebalance.com/how-to-invest-in-real-estate-with-a-self-directed-ira-4057066

Thanks, everyone! I'm looking forward to seeing the powers of compounding over the next few years, until I retire. Won't be cashing it in though-- not an option unless I were to quit, and I'm way too lazy to buy real estate and/or work for myself. I'm paid for my knowledge and experience, not for my hustle... Next big retirement funds milestone might come a little slower, but that's ok. I've reduced my contributions, to just above what I need for the match, to focus on some other goals for the time being. All the calculators I've tested say I can take the break (since I'll have a pension as well).

I'll add my name to the half- millionaire club. Retirement accounts were $500,970 this morning. I'd be more confident in that number staying over 500K if the S&P 500 wasn't sitting all the way to the right on the 52 week range chart, but I'll take it.

Yay! Congrats!! I hit $100k sometime this year - $500k is the next goal...or maybe it should be $250k so I don't have to wait as long. I'm just really excited that so far this year my funds are growing at twice what I'm putting in. Makes it seem like all the saving is paying off now.

Yay, justme!! And I’d make $250k my next milestone, but that’s just because I want to celebrate sooner than what it will take to get to $500k. 😂

It's crazy how long the first 100K took and how quick it goes now. I think it was close to 15 years for the first 100K for me. From 400-500 was 22 months.

That's awesome! I figured mine would drop within a couple days, but it's only managed to go up since I hit it. Not by a large amount, but I'll take it.

Realized another kind of milestone today... My mortgage finally went to <$100k balance. I'm only rounding up to the nearest round payment right now, so not aggressively paying it off (especially since I'm not sure what I'll be doing with it in a few years), but it's still nice to owe less than six figures.

OMG. That's the one I am really excited for! It will be with the February 1st payment and I think psychologically it will be huge. I've had a 6 figure mortgage for over 20 years now.

I've been waiting on a milestone here, but far less illustrious....$249,568.31. Less than a quarter mil! woohoo! Yes - there is a teeny bit of sarcasm there...a quarter million.....been here 15 years..... Mortgage was less when I purchased....oh.....welllllll D'oh! And I'm planning a cash out refi soon....

I'm not sure why the last $3k of milestones is always so elusive. Whenever I reach x97,xxx of any near milestone, the market goes on a slow downturn, or has a huge drop. Maybe it is like that all the time, but you only notice when you are close to something. Hang in there! You are still in the top half for wealth.

I started around there...I think. I'm not sure the exact number because I built, so it wasn't just a purchase price kind of thing I could remember easily. I know I had a 180K first, a 45K second, and I think there was still a land contract loan, plus we did a lot of the work ourselves (all the electrical and painting and staining). It didn't officially drop below 200K until 2010. In 2012 I refinanced 184K to a 15 year loan and it's been dropping FAST now at over 1000/month. In hindsight I wish I would have gone with the 15 year loan sooner...like over 7 years earlier would have been nice.
