That means that 5.8% of the population is packing.     I would think it was higher.

It is higher. 19M is CONCEALED carry. Then there's open carry.

We have open carry in Ga. and you have to have some pretty strict reasons for a CC carry here now.  I used to have a CC before they passed the open carry law.

I grew up in a Jewish area. When my husband and I were first married I said something about the Jewish population being like 15% of America. After he was done laughing and mocking me, he assured me it was like 3% of the population. I said "For 3% of the population they sure make a lot of noise" - referring to how much of Hollywood flaunts their Jewishness.

I kinda feel the same way about hard core gun owners. Many gun owners are super cool with adding licensing or registration, but that small percentage of Americans who have been convinced that is an affront to God and nature are so frickin' loud, we think they are way bigger in number than they are.

It's higher than that, but the stats on guns are similar to our stats on wealth - a lot of people have 0 or very few while a few most of them.

which is why I support the government issuing the permits to those who met the criteria for one. I think it would be wonderful to have a similar system for ownership of guns in general as well.

I live in upstate NY.  Gun ownership is common.  I have one.  I don’t have a pistol permit but quite a few people I know do.

In Ga. the person is registered...not any gun.  So I could have all kinds of guns & they would never know...cause just having a license doesn't mean I own a gun.  We do & I carry one in my vehicle all the time...my .357!

Stasitics show those that DO get CCW's are more law biding.

My DH has a CCP, he leaves with his gun nearly every day. There were some incidents close to his office where people were shot. He usually has a lot of cash, so I felt he was a target, and told him to get a gun. That was all it took. When we were first Married, I told him I did not want a gun in the house.  I took the Class with DD, but I never sent in my paperwork.

DD's boyfriend is a sharpshooter. We joke he owns an Armory. I don't think she has her own gun, her DB just assigns one of his handguns to her.

OC, DH, DD, and myself are Democrats. DS is an independent I think. I don't really think that anyone should be able to own an automatic weapon without a permit and training, I think the country can work something out somewhere inbetween complete regulation and no regulation.

I think there have been a number of situations where you had an unjustified police officer shooting, where an officer's fear of facing an automatic weapon has to factor in to their poor decision making - like the latest shooting of the poor woman in Texas that was just playing video games with her nephew.  Maybe the officer was wondering what threat he was facing in that open door - possibly an automatic weapon?

Republicans talk about supporting law enforcement, but controlling access to automatic weapons would make Police Officer's jobs easier and safer - and also make the rest of America Safer.

The woman had a gun and pointed it at the window in the direction of the officers.  Now, she had every right to protect herself in her own home but it was her pointing the gun at the officers that caused one to fire.  The police didn't follow procedure and announce themselves so I am not defending them at all.  I'm just pointing out that they didn't just go in her home and shoot a woman playing video games with her nephew.

Due to incidents that have happened in this area.  And we always have one handy here in the house...loaded & safety on.  We are (depending on traffic) 20-30 min. away from any help from LE unless one just happened to be in our area.  We need a means of defending ourselves.  We do target practice here on our own property.  We have taught our 2 grands how to shoot every gun we have & also how to break them down & clean them.  They were taught SAFETY FIRST & NEVER point one at a person unless your life is threatened.
I have been threatened both at home & on the road where just showing that I had a gun took the threat away.  That is the main reason for having one available at all times here!
We are rural, not urban at all.  We have 16+ acres and most of our neighbors (except 1) have 8 acres or more...so no one is sitting on top of anyone else & hollering won't attract any attention.  We have had people knock on our door at 11pm at night.  Our house is 0.10mi. off the road, nearly every other house on our road is much closer to the road and we have no night light...but we have motion activated lights on all 4 corners of our house.  There was no obvious reason to come to our house that late when we are so far off the road & other houses are much more accessible.  That guy got met at the door with a gun...he decided very quickly that we weren't good targets for what he might/must have had in mind.  DH met him with one pistol & I was around the corner with another.  Our neighbor across the road has had his house broken into & robbed in broad daylight while he was at work (a widower).   Several homes in this general area have had their doors kicked in during the day by criminals....some have gotten shot, some have gotten scared off & some have hurt residents who didn't have any means to threaten them...so we will continue to keep our guns & practice.

I'm going to disagree with you about when an officer should and shouldn't fire.  if someone is pointing a gun at me I am firing, whether I followed protocol or not. 

I will agree that the entire situation was caused by officers not following protocol.  I can't pretend to know what protocol is when you get a call of suspicious activity and arrive to find the front door open...but at a minimum I would think that would require an officer to yell "police".  

My initial reply that you quoted was to point out that the woman did point a gun at the officers so it was more than "playing video games with her nephew" as was stated.  When guns get pointed, people get shot and I say that as someone that believes in the castle doctrine and believe this woman had every right to protect herself.  She had no way of knowing that the people in her backyard were cops or that the cops were called for a safety check.  The cops didn't announce themselves but were drawn up and fired.

  I'm for similar restrictions for those who speak on public venues.  

      In regards to permits and meeting criteria.
