I'm going to Seattle for a work conference in November. The conference is Wed-Fri, and I plan to fly home on Sunday. That gives me one day to explore Seattle and I need suggestions! In particular, should I extend my stay at the conference hotel (Sheraton Grand Seattle Pike St & 6th Ave), or move to another area? I'm terrible at planning trips - please help!

Following. Seattle — actually the PNW — is on my short list.

Going up the Space Needle is cool. I'd either get the pass where you can go in the morning and then come back at night - or go up during sunset.
The Chihuly museum looked really cool from the outside - I unfortunately didn't get to it due to time.
I met some people who took the ferry across the way and said it was cool over there.
When I was doing my research there's brewery/distillery tours - I think all the winery ones took you out of Seattle.
I'm not sure if whale watching is available during November.
Your hotel is in a decent spot - I stayed at the Motif which is just a block closer to the water. You can walk straight down to Pikes Market and the waterfront - though it's uphill on the way back. You're also walking distance to the monorail (not worth doing by itself, but if you're solo it's a cheap way to get down to the Space Needle - only $2.50 each way and an uber costs more than that). Also close to a light rail station - that's what I used to get to/from the airport but I was not on a work trip.
Not really for a one-day in Seattle trip - but there's ferries that will take up up into Canada - Victoria/Vancouver. Also could just drive there. Not sure on train specifics. Victoria has a nice garden that I would have loved to see if our ship hadn't of docked at 8pm!

When we were in Seattle we bought a ticket which allowed entry into the space needle, chiluly exhibit and gardens, some museums It was a good buy The gardens are beautiful and probably will have some musicians playing
Be sure to visit the Pikes peak mall, fabulous restaurants, see the fish market, gorgeous flower bouquet for sale ( probably can buy some and bring on plane home), great coffee shops and breweries, Maybe in morning go to needle and museums and afternoon at Pikes Peak
Go see the multicolor bubble gum wall for fun We ate dinner at a restaurant on one of the warfs, seafood is yummy!!

Seattle lost its luster for me when DS2 and DDIL decided to move to the other side of the world and they took my DGS1 with them (DGS2 was in utero at the time so leaving him behind would have been a little complicated)

If it’s a nice day, take the ferry to Bainbridge Island (35 min ride). There are shops &galleries walking distance from the ferry on the Bainbridge side.
The ferry runs around hourly or less during busy times. you can get a nice view of Seattle on the water. If the weather is clear you can see Mt Rainie.

I would go to Pike Place Market area in the morning. Shop for a bit and then take a break. There used to be a shop that sold tea and crumpets across the street. Not sure if it's still there. Or have lunch at the cafe in the market overlooking the water. I'd go to the Chihuly Museum and the Spece Needle last. You can eat dinner in the Space Needle but it's very expensive.o

justme, thanks for the info on the monorail and light rail! And thanks everyone for the suggestions! I booked my flights today and decided to take a super-early morning flight the day before the conference (lands at 10:30am in Seattle), so I have the afternoon of that day to explore as well. I might do Bainbridge island that afternoon, and save the Space Needle and museums for Saturday. I drink, but not enough to enjoy a winery or brewery on my own. A lot will depend on the weather, hopefully at least one of the days will be nice. I enjoy nature more than museums or shopping, and it looks like there are plenty of parks and gardens to explore.

Eat at the Glass Museum next to the Space Needle. The Needle has expensive and, I think, very poor food. The Glass Museum is fantastic! Says the PNW native. Sounds like everyone is steering you right. I'd also include a trip through the locks if you find time. And downtown Seattle has a lot of wonderful museums to visit. And the local library is apparently famous for it's architecture. The ferry ride is wonderful but walk on. Do NOT take your car (no need, plenty of nice things to see at the dock). Bring a good rain coat, leave umbrellas at home (wind destroys them), and enjoy yourself! BTW - try a geoduck if you can find one. We are famous for them.

I adore the chihuly museum. We’ve also done a charter around the sound. There’s an art museum near pike’s place market too.

Just to clarify, the proper names are Pike Place Market and Chihuly Garden and Glass. There is also a Museum of Glass but that is a different place in Tacoma. Cool place too, where you can watch artists at work when they are there, but not a good choice with your limited time schedule and transportation. If you want to squeeze in several attractions, the CityPass allows entrance to: 1. Space Needle (day/night) 2. Seattle Aquarium 3. Argosy Cruises Harbor Tour 4. Museum of Pop Culture OR Woodland Park Zoo 5. Chihuly Garden and Glass OR Pacific Science Center Price of the pass is $99, which they claim is about half of the regular box office entrance fees. The aquarium and harbor tour are both on the waterfront so easily doable in a few hours. The Space Needle, MoPOP, Pacific Science Center, and Chihuly Garden and Glass are all at the Seattle Center. Easily walkable between all of them. The zoo is a few miles north but still in the city. It was a national leader in natural exhibits for the animals decades ago, and has won several Best National Exhibit awards. Pike Place Market is free except for what you buy, and several places including the fish market will ship. They do put on a pretty good show too and usually have a crowd. The one I had not yet gotten around to was the Chihuly, but my GF took me for my birthday. I thought it was very good. I have in the past had memberships to the zoo and the Science Center and currently have free admission to both PSC and MoPOP (as well as some other museums) through my bank so visit those when I go to Seattle Center. I think I have taken dates to all of the places listed here.

DD and I did a day trip to Seattle earlier this year. We did Space Needle/Chihuly Museum of glass, Pikes Place Market and Museum of POP Culture. I was kind of bored in Museum of POP Culture.
Chihuly is spectacular, I would go back. The restaurant we ate at in Pikes Place market was also very good. DD had a Chicken Salad and I had some kind of white fish maybe Cod? We got there early - before 11 am - and I know we chose to be seated right away and then we waited a 15 minutes or so for the menu to change over. Apparently there were quite a few people there who did the same.
DD went to the Space needle on an impromptu trip with her Boyfriend - flight was cancelled and she was re-routed through Seattle. They were there on a Saturday, and they pretty might close down on Saturday night - so just make sure you check the hours when you are making your plans. They got tickets to the last trip up on the space needle at night - she bought the tickets en-route to Seattle from the Plane - cause she is the kind of person that makes things happen. They did not do Chihuly on that trip, she did not know about it...a couple in the restaurant at Pikes Place told us to go there, and that if we were doing the Space Needle anyways, admission was included with the Space Needle ticket. That couple also told us if we wanted to do a Daytrip winery tour, to come back to Seattle, b/c the wineries were not far out from Seattle - so it was better for a Day trip than the Napa Valley. So, that is one of our Day Trip Goals for the future.

Do a quick search on here, there's a few threads with suggestions. I'm also a local. Your hotel is a good jumping point depending what you want to do.

We stayed at that hotel when we were there. It was nice and would stay there again. The breakfast buffet was good, too. They had some glass exhibits at the hotel which were fun to see.
The water seemed a little far for us to walk down there, especially since it was raining.
Agree Victoria is nice, too. I'd love to go back there when I have more time. There's a park in the middle of town with a bunch of peacocks living there and wandering around lol.

I'm a little OT but bean29 posted Chihuly is spectacular, I would go back. I have not seen the exhibit in Seattle but did go to a gallery in NO that was showing works. I second the trip to see what bean29 suggested. It is truly spectacular. Worth a visit if you are into that type or thing - heck even if you aren't I think you would enjoy!
Even my son was impressed - He asked what I wanted for Mother's Day and I said trip to NO to see exhibit. He rolled his eyes and I could hear the little boy in him saying "another one of Mother's culture trips" But he admitted that he was impressed!

It is not just the glass, it is the gardens with the glass pieces worked into the display - DD and I both enjoyed it. It is too bad my Mother was not with us on this trip - b/c it is the type of place she would have also enjoyed.
