Better than people like you “you’ve paid for your own, now pay for mine”. I don't mind paying for others. It benefits everyone, like the proverbial Stone Soup. I have zero problems paying for people that are unable to take care of themselves. I am not ok with funding people’s lifestyle, choices or bad decisions.

Understood. "I've got mine, I paid for mine, so fuck everyone else!" Better than people like you “you’ve paid for your own, now pay for mine”. 👍🏻🙂

I've already paid for my college, I paid for my children's child care, I saved my maternity leave, I would never expect to get a bonus for giving birth, etc. You only come out if you are a person who takes advantage of the social programs. I'm sure there are plenty of people that do not go to college, do not have children, etc. I do not believe that they actually come out ahead. Based on the tax rates, I can say without question that I would not come out ahead in Quebec. And my attitude is never "I got mine" but "I paid for mine, so you can pay for yours". Understood. "I've got mine, I paid for mine, so fuck everyone else!" Wonder what being perfect is like... Perfect and smug

1) Average salary in Quebec is under $50,000, so very few would pay those high taxes. 2) Our taxes don't just pay for healthcare, but also university education, eldercare, affordable child care, familial leave, baby bonuses and much more. How much do Americans have to shell out for daycare and nursing homes and university? We come out ahead. "I do not need nor want general social programs so I do not want to pay for them. I have very good health insurance and while not cheap, it is certainly not worth $48k extra in taxes. "
Yes, we know. Conservatives don't give a fuck about anyone but themselves. "I've got mine, so screw you!" We don't mind paying for social programs because it benefits the entire community. Fewer people hungry, fewer people homeless, fewer people uneducated. I've already paid for my college, I paid for my children's child care, I saved my maternity leave, I would never expect to get a bonus for giving birth, etc.You only come out if you are a person who takes advantage of the social programs. The baby bonuses are to ensure that every single child has a roof over its head and enough to eat. You were screaming about how pro-life you are on another thread, and now you're saying that you don't care if children go hungry. Talk about hypocrisy! You don't want to pay for peoples' "poor choices". I guess if they're stupid enough to get pregnant, their children can starve.

Better than people like you “you’ve paid for your own, now pay for mine”. 👍🏻🙂 This isn't fair either. There has never been any information available to us for you to be able to claim that Weltz wants other people to pay for her. I don't know much about the Quebec tax system but if I'm remembering correctly that Weltz was a psych nurse and if that position took the specialized training my relative's did and if she received similar compensation, Weltz has paid her share into the system.

The places this thread went is why I try to just post facts and stay away from the opinion stuff.
Part of the reason we can't have many civilized conversations about taxation, welfare, politics, the A word and other things is because we all see something or someone that colours our perception of the idea. It is difficult to get past that perception to see the other side has a point.
Also you can't debate issues here really. It takes too long to post your points. The thread could have moved on to other places by the time you're done. Or you'll have most of the people TL:DR it so what the fuck was the point?

Wow. This thread has gone off the rails.
That said, the U.S. does have at least one social program for a group of the most vulnerable, Medicare. There are also low cost (supposedly even free but I don't use a free one) Advantage plans to reduce costs. You may lose some choices, but the U.S. does try to help the elderly.

My response wasn't really directed at Weltschmerz, it was more of a general response that I have seen what Tequila said many times before. But again, not from Weltschmerz. This has gone off track so far that the discussion has become pointless, it won't go anywhere from here.

Part of the reason we can’t have discussions in this board is because there are a few members who are nasty assholes right out of the gate. Immediately attacking anyone who doesn’t think like them. Then it goes downhill. I do appreciate that you could be open to discussion over different viewpoints. I was truly interested in the huge difference in taxes. I remember working uonthere and being utterly shocked at how much the staff paid in taxes. For me, that is not a system I want. I would just pay a lot kore in without getting a lot of benefit out of it. Perhaps if I didn’t already pay for everything myself I would have different thoughts. I’m done with this thread, though. When I continue to get jabs thrown at me I throw back. I prefer not to become a nasty, miserable asshole.

That being said one of the things I liked about this board was the presence of people with radically different viewpoints from mine. But there are increasingly few conservatives on this board so there are fewer opportunities for me to listen to other views and not get caught in the 'echo chamber'. Miss Tequila is still here and occasionally is see formerroomate99 post. But it's been a long time since I read anything from zibazinski or Shooby. I wish they'd come back because their life experiences and attitudes are just as relevant as the most liberal members.

Here's DD#2's for YTD: Total for all results -- -- --
Charge Deductible Copay/coins Moda paid $9,686.57 $219.81 $1,119.62 $4,933.16
Now, this is still out of the same account/premiums that I mentioned in the original post. That means that Moda paid another ~$5K in addition to my OP with still the $14K in premiums. Also annoying: I cannot see DH's nor DD#1's numbers because they're over the age of 21.

I always thought teachers had good health insurance benefits. Apparently they don't. That does seem like a lot of money for someone with a full-time job with benefits. I know of people with similar coverage at comparable costs, but they are self-employed. I suppose it depends on what one quantifies as "good". I'm certainly not thrilled with how much I pay in premiums nor how much I still have to pay OOP. If what my insurance package provides is better than average, then I suppose I shouldn't complain. In the state in which I live, the state gov controls most of public employee health insurance. It was supposed to make it cheaper for public employees, but I'm not sure that's reality.

Can your DH and daughter give permission for you to access their info? I was able to set it up thru Anthem's website, so I could access all of hubby and the kids' info when necessary.

I have done the same thing for my dad so I can access his various accounts, including health accounts.
He started losing statements. Now I know what is going on.

Not sure if this post belongs here or not... My wife hit the ol donut hole in early September. We have had over a thousand dollars out of pocket, and are going to 30 day supplies until the end of the year, when we start over next year. Last year she was not in the donut hole at all. The difference is the doctor(s) changed several of her medications over the year, in the middle of 90 day supplies which basically were wasted due to medication changes plus one medication which had a much higher cost for Medicare.

My year is about 2k out of pocket. We have decent health insurance but I use Massage therapy, chiropractic and essential oils as extra towards wellness. Sounds extravagant but here's the thing without these things sometimes I can barely move. No moving, no income. The extra care I take is very well worth it. If you have health you have a million dreams If you don't have health you only have one

Rather than show the total charges, I wish they would show the actual amount paid to providers...

Mine shows the total amount billed, paid to the provider, written off, and my responsibility. I do wish they would show it by item rather than just a total.

We have had a life changing event at our house and health care is a big issue going forward. My DH drove into a train on September 30 and was air ambulanced 150 miles to the major medical center. He was in the hospital for 2 weeks and will be in the rehab hospital for another 2 to 3 weeks. Our health insurance premiums for two individual policies are over $18,000 per year and we purchase coverage on the open market. Fortunately, the hospital he was flown to also owns the health insurance company we have purchased coverage from.
I have no idea how much money it costs to be stabilized at one hospital, helicoptered to another hospital, surgery for broken bones, and have follow up care.
DH has an individual high deductible policy with a maximum out of pocket of $6750. The only contact I have had from the hospital billing is the preauthorization for hospital stay.
DH is going to be OK, but the next few months will be challenging. He has a broken leg, arm and 4 broken ribs as well as a concussion. I will update the numbers as we go along, in the hopes someone else can learn something from this experience. Please everyone, look both ways every time when crossing a railroad track. Not every crossing has lights, the motorist has the responsibility to know the way is clear.
On the plus side, my beer bill has gone way down and his credit card bill should be zero next month. I am fortunate that I can stay out of town with friends and family. Adding motel rooms to the total would balloon these expenses.

bookkeeper I am so sorry about your husband's accident. I live in a rural area and most crossings do not have light. The trains do blow whistles. I hope your insurance pays everything over the catastrophic amount.

Absolutely, particularly with Medicare. UHC/Peehip was billed $54,840 and $61,941 for two episodes of internal bleeding that required hospital stays. These are just the hospital's parts, not the doctors who did procedures and/or consulted. They paid $5681 for each stay (I just noticed that they were the same), and we paid $250 for each stay. That's only slightly over 10% of the billing amount. We pay about $5000 a year for insurance including Medicare and the state UHC plan for teachers. ETA: bookkeeper, I am so sorry this happened to your husband.
