It's a symbol that has become associated with white supremacy/ nazi rhetoric and you don't get why it's now considered hate speech? Why am I totally unsurprised??

I'm still OK with it also. Certain 'groups' can call it anything they want. It's still means OK to me. Others too. OK [ˌōˈkā] EXCLAMATION used to express assent, agreement, or acceptance. "OK, I'll pass on your message" · [more] www.oxforddictionaries.com/us/

I think the American public should be made more aware of the phrases, symbols, etc...
I know I was surprised when during Trump's campaign he would use phrases and themes that mirrored white nationalists and white supremacists rhetoric.
My suburb had a fellow who talked a good talk who ran for various city government positions over the years. I never voted for him - as I was put off by the way he would phrase things. Yes, I was concerned about my community - but in that "cough" brown people way. It wasn't until his opponents distributed his White Supremacist writings/opnions that he had published himself online and in paper formats - that it became very obvious what the 'catch phrases' were and what exactly was meant by his sort of benign concern that our suburb should get back to the 'way it was in the 50's' and such (mind you this was in the late 90's early 2000's).
When Trump spouted some of the same double meaning stuff right out of the white supremacists who tried to get elected in my hometown, I was appalled. And no one else seemed to be upset by it... And this is why I think their rhetoric and code words and phrases should be public knowledge. I think we all should all know exactly where they stand the minute they open their mouths. And not be left to dechiper/interprete what WE think their double speak or double entendres actually mean.
And yes, the white supremacist in my suburb is one - he's the head of a group's local chapter.

BTW - do people still go around using the ok sign to mean okay? I haven't seen anyone do that in years. I guess my people use their words. Maybe a thumbs up every once in a while if verbal communication is not possible and texting isn't practical.

FWIW: I haven't used the OK hand gesture in decades. It's an obscene gesture in some places. And I work for an international employer. And I live in a city with a very diversie population. I don't need to be seen as crass or low class by a co-worker or just in general in public.
TBH, I don't think I've seen it used in years... since texting by cell phone became popular. no one makes eye contact across a distance anymore (isn't that why you use a hand gesture to communicate something?) - you just text who ever you want to communicate with. I doubt the verbal or written OK (or K or Okie Dokie or kthxby) will go away anytime soon (think texting...)

It's right along with why workers do not point with one finger - it's either 2 or the whole hand. Also, ever notice during the safety speech on planes the flight attendants always point to emergency exits with two fingers?

Context is an important piece of communication. I read the whole article, didn't see anything about context in there. Just the vilification of a common gesture. I’m hoping the Repo-Cons here don’t get too snowflakey about this as the JDL has its reason. They even denounce Arizonans that wear Oath Keeper shirts for being anti-Semitic. I suggest the following ...it’s 👌 to use this symbol anytime you want if you are not a white supremacist. If you are, don’t. And please stop the whining when so many of these symbols have real meaning.

How will you survive? Should we set up a support group for you? Or maybe assist you in another way. Do you need us to bring you Kleenex to cry about it?

Here is you list of offensive numbers. 1-11 1-11 is a numeric symbol used by the Aryan Knights, an Idaho-based prison gang, to identify themselves. Substituting letters for numbers, 1 and 11 mean A and K, i.e., Aryan Knights. 1-11 Hate Symbol 100% 100% is shorthand for "100% white" among white supremacists. It is also common to create alphanumeric variations to proclaim solidarity with a particular white supremacist group or gang, such as "112%" for "100% Aryan Brotherhood." 100% Hate Symbol 109/110 The figure 109 is white supremacist numeric shorthand for the number of countries anti-Semites claim Jews have been expelled from. In calling for the expulsion of Jews from the U.S., they often refer to the U.S. as the 110th. 109/110 Hate Symbol
There you have it, No longer can you use any of the numbers. you will offend some one!! link to full list

Are they on the list? Remember what the JDL says about shirts such as the Oath Keeper ones.
