I misplaced my checkbook last year, and needed to write a check to my brother (he prefered checks when it's business related, which buying body parts for human consumption is, so...) I found out that my credit union will print off and provide either 12 or 15 checks/year for free, so I just did that. I need to go get another set before the end of the year to make sure I continue to have more than I will ever need.
I did find my checkbook, and had about 20 checks left, but that is the last of the regular ones I have.

Should I add that his day job is "detective"?
He has a small farm, so sells beef, pork, and goat meat. But "body parts for human consumption" sounds more interesting than hobby farmer.

I rarely use checks. When I need one and don't have any left, I go to the branch and they print out 3/page for me. I get 1-2 pages.
No cost.

Free. Also free bill pay. I forget I have checks somewhere and try to reorder. The bank reminds me that I have x amount that haven't been used.

I am impressed with those of you getting free checks. This question isn't for those getting the bank to print them, etc. Those of you getting a free box, are you paying a monthly fee for the account?

No. In my case, I just need to have direct deposit every month and I qualify for free checking. It also comes with a box of checks. I think I use around 20 checks per year - 12 for the HOA, 2 for the IRS (I usually owe), 2 for Property Tax and around 4 or 5 for various others. My box usually lasts me 5 years.

No monthly fee for my account. But we do have a high average balance (and our savings account is there, so high combined balances), so one of the perks with our account is free checks.

I had to search YNAB to find the answer. Last time I bought checks was 2 boxes in April of 2016 for $15.50 I mostly just use them for kid related stuff.

In my case no. I carry a high balance in checking and 2 savings account. Don't remember how much but it's enough to keep everything at no charge. And I do not have over draft protection. Haven't written a check that has bounced in about 50 years. Some banks however will offer senior citizen checking account for those 55 and over. Might be worth looking to that.

I don't think you can get overdraft protection any more. My days of thinking I needed it are over but when I asked the last time about it, I was told that is a thing of the past.
My credit union will take money from my savings to cover something if I've totally screwed up. I have sometimes paid a bill from the wrong account. It's a screw up at my end and I just have to transfer the money to the correct account.

No- I have a lot of my investments with Fidelity. No fees on the checking account and they pay interest.

I don't pay a fee and have free billpayer with no minimum balance, but I do have to buy checks.
My bank's overdraft protection is tied to a CC they issued.

I can get "free" checks. The shipping however, isn't free. Last time I got them from one bank shipping was $7. For a different account I bought checks from Walmart. Not much more, price wise. I need to look and see what I have left, I write checks out of that account much less than the "free" checks one.

I got free checks from my credit union last time I ordered. I got a couple hundred checks about 5 years ago and have used about 25. I probably won’t use these up for many years to come.

When I was doing the rep payee volunteer work, the agency had an agreement with a local bank that all of the accounts are with that bank. The bank knows there won't be overdrafts because the checking accounts are not being written by high risk clients who do overdraft their accounts.
The checks were provided by the bank for free. They did things by actually writing checks. I don't know if they still do it that way.

I order through my bank and I get a box for free. This is just the standard order - none of the fancy designs. Ditto

Our credit union has a “Premier Club” for those over age 50. It costs $15/year but includes one box of checks (which is more than we need and there are no shipping charges) and half off the cost of a small size safe dep box and some other benefits. It’s a great deal for us. We don’t pay anything for our account. In fact, we get 3% interest each month on our checking account bal up to $15K (as long as we have auto deposit and use our debit card 12 times each month)

I had paid my bank $50 for two boxes shortly before you started this thread. Hopefully I remember this in five years when I need more, so that I look for other options instead of just paying the bank.

I just ordered a box from Walmart, was $9 after shipping and tax. I have ordered from them before on other accounts and they are fine.
After 4 years I am just coming to the end of our initial free check order. I average 2 checks a month, but since we moved and bought a new house we are writing a lot of checks to people doing work on both old house and new house. Plus we get to put new address, not that anyone really cares.

It is a different bank name (they merged) and a different last name (I got married). I just cross out and correct. They don't care.

Nothing. They are not available here anymore. To pay bills, it's either - computer banking
- cell app
- written pay order (the bank makes them, you get 12 or 18 per year with postage included in your bank "package fee", each lets you pay a maximum of about ten bills, and you fill them in with the receiving account numbers, amounts, and names of recipients, sign and mail in, typically monthly - pay is monthly for almost all people; mostly older people use them)
- going to the till to pay an humongous fee (over $5 per bill)

Lund, where do you live?
I have a grandfathered "free" checking account that we got when we opened a Home Equity Line of Credit. We get free checks with it. I think I also get free checks with my H SA account, but I use electronic pay/debit pay as often as I can. I did not know I got free checks for awhile, so I have paid for checks a few times. If I have to pay for them, I usually use something like Checks in the mail.
I also don't write a lot of checks, so maybe 20/year.
