I love self-checkout. I will leave a store if I walk in and the lines are super long. I don’t have time for that.
I’m pretty efficient at self-checkout and there are usually minimal people using them so no wait.
It is ludicrous to me to want to stop technology. All jobs change with the times. I’m sure computers put a lot of accountants out of business. Depreciation calculations used to be manual. Tax returns prepared by hand, etc. you can’t fight it. You need to keep your skill set up to date.

.... you can’t fight it. You need to keep your skill set up to date. Actually the OP is evidence you can fight it. And self checkout might be about one clerk up dating their skill set to help people on a half dozen machines, it is about others just losing their job. And it should be noted that you can win these battles as Oregon does not have self serve gas pumping.

Our local CVS now has the self check out. I am fine with it, although it only takes credit and debit cards and gift cards; no cash transactions. If you have cash, a manager has to check you out. I've used self check outs that accept cash and give change, so I have no idea why CVS uses machines that don't. We have a lot of older people in the area, and it's pretty obvious they hate the self check outs. They cannot scan their saver cards, have no idea where to put their CC and don't understand which side of the package needs to face the scanner in order to be read. And they get pissy about the sale price not coming up right away (it show up on the screen as a discount at the end of the transaction).
Walmart and Target both have the self check out, Publix grocery and Walgreens don't. I think Aldi does have them as well. I am not a fan of them if they don't accept all forms of legal tender, but I realize the technology is here to stay.

I've seen people do some really stupid shit while pumping gas.

Interesting about not taking cash. I figured they took all forms of tender.
As for losing jobs I think some of those cashiers are pushing a big cart/flat dolly with 4 to 6 baskets running around the store “filling” online pickup or deliver orders.
Don’t get in the path of one. They will run you down since they are on a time frame. I’ve seen as many as three running around in Target (this is a super target). Had a friend who does wallyworld said they saw a few in the store she uses.
so maybe not as many jobs lost as thought??

This is also the first CVS I've seen using one (the others I frequent don't have them yet). But the advantage in this particular store is that the most incredibly annoying cashier ever is not there, yelling at everyone who comes in, "WELCOME TO CVS!!!! CAN I HELP YOU FIND ANYTHING??" I never did yell back what I was thinking (Um, no, you're standing at a register and I think that's enough of a job for you). She was so loud that when she did that, it made me duck and run from her.

My grocery store now has an app that you can scan the item while you shop and then you upload it to the self checkout when you go to pay. You still have to weigh produce but it has been a timesaver for me.

there is a CVS location inside South Station in Boston, very heavy pedestrian traffic. the self checkouts in that location also don't take cash. I never gave it a second thought, though. I wonder how much of it is where it is located?

I have run into some WMT Supercenters that only take credit or debit cards at the self check during overnight hours, and you cannot even use loose change to lower the bill. I like using the self check sometimes to get rid of loose change accumalation. Always go with at least $.79 in change if I think I am going to self check.

Our local Costco just got self check out. Unless you have only a few items, they are a pain in the ass to use because there just is not enough room. There is also no scanning gun, so leaving 40 lb bags of kitty litter in the cart isn’t an option like going through the check out lanes.

You still have to weigh produce but it has been a timesaver for me. I do this at Sam's Club and it's awesome. Scan everything as I load it in the cart, click pay, and walk out the door. There's a barcode the person checking the carts on the way out scans and that's it. So fast. No unloading the cart at the checkout and loading it back up again. No weighing produce either as Sam's doesn't sell by the pound.

I'm totally spoiled because the grocery store where I take dad takes your groceries to the car and puts them in. Now I expect it when I go other places and they don't do that. At one, I have to ask for them to put the bags in the cart so I can push the cart to my car to load the groceries. We have 2 supermarkets near each other that offer to take the groceries to the car. In January 2018 I was pretty weak recovering from December surgery and complications & it was too cold for me to push the wagon & load the groceries. I could unload them slowly when I got home because the garage door goes into the kitchen. I used the service somewhere from 2-4 times because otherwise I wouldn't have been able to shop. One time the kid had an attitude & wanted me to push the cart, I told him no & he pushed it & loaded the groceries into the trunk. There was no way I could physically handle pushing the cart in winter temperatures. The worst part was I wasn't allowed to park in the handicapped spots because my disability was too short term, so we had to go what was a pretty long way to the car for a sick person. When I used the service I tipped the loader $5 each time.

I thought stores didn't like "self check out" lines so much - because so much merchandise walks out of the store without being paid for? My local big box groceries put in alot of 'self check out stations' and then ripped out all of them except for like 2 or 4 self check out machines. They now have one person manning the self check out stations and a couple of regular lines open.
I loath the self check out lines for grocery shopping - unless I have 2 or 3 items.
I tend to use the self check out at the Big Box home improvement stores - cause I've just got a couple of things - and I don't need a bag.
