Here is my theory of Karma - Tx already had the most lax gun laws, and yesterday, three more laws loosening gun restrictions went into effect in Texas.
You reap what you sow, Texas.

Oh, good grief! A Texas Republican state representative said he opposes stricter gun laws and that people should instead be "praying for protection" hours after a mass shooting shook West Texas. Republican Matt Schaefer posted on Facebook Saturday that "so-called gun-control solutions" won't "stop a person with evil intent," and that people should instead pray for victims and those with "evil intent." www.cnn.com/2019/09/01/politics/texas-state-rep-praying-for-protection-shooting/index.htmlWhy yes! Prayer always stops the bad guys!

Trump was talking today about the real problem - mental health issues.
Too damn bad he cut the federal gov budget for mental health treatment by 20% a few months back.

The ABC World news this evening mentioned that 93% of registered voters WANT unrestricted (I believe that was the term) background checks. Ninety-three percent! So why aren't politicians falling all over themselves to do what 93% of registered voters are demanding?

Who did they ask? I'm guessing this is the poll: link
You have to scroll down to question 56. Looks like the numbers are actually more like 96-97% of Americans, Republicans, Democrats, White, Black, Urban, Rural, Young, Old, all regions, even gun owners.

If I was asked that question, I would agree with the majority.

Let me throw this thought out for discussion. He had been fired hours before from a truck driving job,, here is the thought, could he have been on his way back to the previous employer to shoot them,,
when he was stopped by the State police, He thought some one had turn him in,, that he was going to going to be busted right there, He started with the police officer. once he started all hell broke loose, shooting everything in sight/

5 dead, 21 injured suspect is a white male in his 30's, police know his identity. No confirmations of a 2nd shooter at this time. Suspect is dead. Scene was hard to contain because it was constantly moving as suspect was shooting while driving. 2 vehicles were both the suspect, which is why they cannot confirm a 2nd suspect & are treating it as a no longer active situation. All started with a DPS traffic stop.
Odessa press conference currently happening.
White male in his 30’s...... what do you want to bet he is a white supremacist? www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/chicagos-bloody-labor-day-weekend-sees-at-least-35-shot-7-of-them-killed/ar-AAGIcE9?li=BBnb7KzWanna bet none of these were white male racists with the guns?

I think it ties in. Studies have shown that people join gangs because they feel there is no hope for a better life otherwise. Different motives and reasons but the hooks used to lure someone into a gang vs radicalize someone into committing mass murder aren't that different. You can ban guns or lock up every single person who shows signs of mental illness all day long but you aren't going to solve anything until we change the narrative that people are hearing.

The police say at this time they don't know why this happened, I only offered a scenario. Odessa gunman purchased weapon in private sale: report The suspect in a mass shooting that killed seven over the weekend in Odessa, Texas, reportedly obtained the gun through a private sale, which does not require a background check in the state. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) had earlier stated that Seth Ator had failed a background check for a previous gun purchase and did not undergo one for the weapon used in the shooting, while authorities had said he had been flagged as a “prohibited person” legally prohibited from owning or buying a firearm. In a private sale in Texas, gun owners are not allowed to sell firearms to buyers they know are flagged but are not obligated to conduct background checks or ask the buyer, according to ABC News. link

What was the reason for the failed background check? A failed background check can be any thing from a valid, reason that a person can not own or buy a LEGAL gun. It can be a whole bunch of other reason Including mistaking the lawful owner with some one that has a similar name. An old address that did not match. some one in government that put the wrong file in some one else's file. Now that you have determined what the person who put the hold on was thinking, what was the hold for??

He failed it. And then he bought a rifle from some private seller. He then murdered and injure a number of people.

Actually making a background check a legal requirement even for private sales makes sense: if you don't properly check not only could you be criminally liable → AND you would be open to civil damages where a survivor or family of a person killed could sue you in civil court. A few nice big judgements against non-compliant sellers could go a long way in getting people to actually take responsibilty for their actions.

I'm going to get flamed and say I don't think mental illness or gun laws will solve the problem. We should be putting more time and money into fighting domestic terrorism like we do international terrorism like ISIS. We should be finding and shutting down radical web sites and inflitrating these groups breaking them up from within. If there isn't anyone to spread the tale that your life will having meaning if you go down in a bullet filled blaze of glory then there is no one to be radicalized.
You can't predict which mentally ill person is going to be the one to go off the deep in. It will just drive people even further into hiding and make them even more isolated if they think that getting help is going to wind up with them being on a watch list of some sort. We also need to change the message that the world is ending because of *insert scapegoat here*. When you tell people there is no hope and the solution is scapegoating you give fuel for radicalization. We should have leadership that is guiding us into the new century, one that statistically speaking is the healthiest, safest, wealthiest time to ever be a human being on this planet. You don't hear that message though because it gets no votes or ratings. We should be spreading the message that times have changed and that's okay, you can change too we're here to help.
We also need a massive change in how we report mass shootings. The shooter should be some random nameless face. No parade of everyone who knew him down to the neighbor's dog being interviewed, no hours of psychoanalysis about why he is the way he is. Stop giving them the fame they think they are owed. Human beings are very invested in self preservation, you have to have the allure of something better in order to get you to go out and risk being shot full of holes by the police. Fame is that allure, stop giving it to them.

Most of the gun nuts I have met, and I define gun nut as supporting anything beyond handguns and hunting rifles for civilians appear to be lacking.... ahem..... somewhere else in their lives. And I have met a lot growing up in the sticks.
Any excuse to keep their access to weapons of fast/mass destruction is reasonable; any check on it too onerous. They don’t care how many are killed as long as they can get their jollies off with their..... ahem... “equalizer”

That particular phrase could be used a lot more often here. With certain people, of course.

Indiana and their very loose gun laws. What a shame. Chicago, Illinois and you can cry all you want. The sales are legal. It is Illinois citizens that break the law by the fact they purchase them knowing it is illegal to have them back in Illinois and use them to slaughter their neighbors. I know from your previous posts you give a rat's ass about black gun victims unless they are killed by a white man. Or do you not care about handgun victims killed one or two at a time, several times a weekend?
