We're not getting a trade deal with China.
A trade deal with China that Trump could accept would require China to change its entire totalitarian system and economic model (a fascist version of capitalism that serves the state) to give us what we want -- which is free trade where China plays by the rules instead of cheating all the time. Plus China not stealing our technology and intellectual property.
So that's not going to happen, period.
Get used to it.
Trump's trashing-talking about China and gradualist approach to imposing tariffs are aimed at sending the message to U.S. businesses to get out of China.
For the most part, U.S. businesses are getting the message and getting out.
U.S. exports to China totaled $120 Billion in 2018. This is not even a rounding error in our $21 TRILLION U.S. economy.
That's because China's courts always rule against the foreigner. It's impossible for us to sell our stuff in China unless China wants our stuff. They want our technology companies there so they can steal our technology to make their military more powerful.
And they need our food. So they allow our AG products in.
There's very little potential for us to sell stuff in China on any kind of free-trade basis. It's fools gold. Has been for years.
I will return to this thread at a later date and discuss how you got played by the elites who are part of China's "Barbarian State Management Program"- which basically works like this: you get the power brokers in the barbarian state together and give them a taste of the good life. You tell them what you need and expect from them for this to continue. You tell them what you tell your people or how you manage things back home is up to you-- we don't care what happens in the Barbarian state- but if you keep us happy, you'll live very well. They all took the bribe- and screwed us.
Our famers are certainly being hurt by the tariffs.
SOLUTION: U.S. government buys the food our farmers were going to sell to China and distribute it to the homeless and the poor. Chump change in the scheme of things. We need to decouple ourselves from China.
I only care about the few small farmers who are left who are hurt by this. We can help them temporarily so they can adjust.
The Conagras and Big AG will just have to cope.
America's steel companies were not competing with China's steel companies. China's government decided to target America's steel companies by dumping government-subsidized steel on our markets at prices below the cost of production. China's goal was to eliminate the U.S. steel industry.
They could pick off one U.S. industry at a time with this strategy -- which is exactly what they were doing.
That's not free trade and it's not fair trade.
Tariffs on China amount to almost nothing in terms of increased prices for American consumers. We only imported $530 Billion from China in 2018 -- again, barely a rounding error in our 21 TRILLION economy.
So you might have to pay an extra $2 for a shirt. Or, we could buy shirts from Thailand, Indonesia and places like that. There are 7 BILLION people we can trade with outside of China.
If we did no trade with China, it wouldn't be a big deal in the scheme of things. But we will continue to trade with China -- just with 25% Tariffs . . . until they start playing by the rules and stop cheating and stop stealing our stuff.
There will be a 25% surcharge on anything coming from China so they don't put our industries out of business with their state-subsidized businesses.
Trump could not be more clear on this. But he wants to give U.S. businesses time to adjust their supply chains.
This is something he's been talking about literally for 20-30 years. It's pretty close to the entire reason he ran for President -- to level the playing field on trade.
Trump will likely cite the crisis in Hong Kong as the primary reason for no trade deal with China -- which has shown the world that it cannot even tolerate a tiny island of freedom within its domain.
We're all for free trade, but it has to be fair. And it can't be with cheaters and thugs.

No deal...he's toast! Most farmers are pissed now...suicides up, bankruptcy up, loan payments behind....markets are gone likely forever. The government doesn't have enough billions to buy all our farmers produce & then just give it away.

I am thinking President Trump could "be more clear" or perhaps honest as to what is going on. I agree with dondub it is a great posting.

I am counting on a trade war with China. it benefits me to no end. I am hedged hard. every time Trump brings this up, I get a bump. if it goes the way you say, I am going to make tons of cash. in addition, as a US manufacturer, this is great for me. double bonus.
for everyone else, y'all are fucked. especially if you buy Chinese stuff, which pretty much everyone does. you have my sympathies.
if I were self serving, I would be a huge Trump fan. but I am not. you can complete the syllogism, I will presume.

“There are 7 billion people we can trade with...” Wrong! There are few more than 7 billion on the planet and over 1 billion are Chinese! Our industries are just as subsidized or almost as subsidized as the Chinese ones. We just call them “tax incentives” or “R&D Grant”. If Trump were the business man that he thinks he is he should’ve prepared our economy first and then hit with the tariffs in order to protect our products. And $530 billion is not chump change as you make it sound. If we would push $530 billion in our healthcare system some major changes would take place.
