Remember after El Paso and Dayton, how Trump said we really needed to quickly move on improving background checks, that was something he was going to make happen 'very soon'?
Well - didn't take long to flip flop on that.
www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/after-lobbying-by-gun-rights-advocates-trump-sounds-a-familiar-retreat/ar-AAG23ji
Wayne Lapierre, the NRA head, came and had a chat with Trump at his Bedminster resort, and suddenly, Trump flip flopped.
Shocking, I know, that our POTUS has such a jelly spine that he can easily pivot to whatever the last person who talked to him said.
Trump is now parroting the NRA line that the problem is really just mental health issues - nothing anyone can do about that, not a gun problem at all, let's all hold hands and do the thoughts and prayers thing like usual.
I've forgotten what it's like to have a POTUS with firm convictions, who makes statements and then stands by them and isn't swayed by what a lobby/Fox news host/son in law/daughter/guy who mops out the oval office bathroom just said to him.

That's because reality set in,
More background checks are not going to make any difference, How many mass shooters have there ever been? 100? 200? 500? So we are going to try to put far more restrictions on 329,000,000 because of the actions of How many? Let's enforce drinking laws harder, that will save a lot more people!

Well that makes total sense. Let's let more innocent people die so that others don't have to be inconvenienced.

That's because reality set in,
... Here is what happens: Step 1: Event happens - maybe a shooting or a special guest talks about something in Fox & Friends Step 2: The President of the United States sends out a tweet to the world Step 3: Reality (or some version thereof) sets in Ready, shoot, aim. I don't think it is a good thing that this President reacts before he gets in touch with reality. YMMV

I also understand the is NOTHING that he can do that would make you happy, which is unfortunate.

I didn't start this thread to argue about gun control again. We've had that discussion multiple times.
I'm pointing out how, time and time again, Trump will make some dramatic statement promising serious reform/regulations/change, only to pivot 180 degrees within a few days/weeks. Sometimes, he even repivots back again. He usually claims he never had the opinion he was just voicing a few days or weeks before, even when there are tweets he made about it, or video of him talking about it as proof.
He seems to have no moral compass, no basic standards that he uses to guide his decisions.
Instead, he appears to switch his opinions depending on what the polls say, or what someone on his staff or on twitter or Fox News says.
The problem for him is that he really isn't very politically savvy, and he hasn't been a Republican for very long, so he doesn't really have a platform.
I think it's a problem for the POTUS to be so wishy-washy. It sends a bad message internationally, both to friends and foes alike. It tells his Republican supporters they shouldn't really trust him to be supportive of the Republican goals, and tells the Dems not to trust anything he says that seems bipartisian or moderate, because he will quickly switch his stance (and then maybe switch back again). Then on top of all the switching, he'll lie and claim he never said what we all heard and saw him say.

That is so stupid. Why should even one person have to die so that more don't have to jump through a few hoops? We should be doing that anyway and not just handing out guns to everyone. The greater good is saving lives, not making gun ownership easy. Let's do something about drinking, next you'll call for prescription drugs to be banned, next it will be marijuana, then I'm sure something else will follow. When is it ever going to be addressed that stricter gun laws is also a very important subject that needs to be looked at?

Not surprised, sadly. When is the last time he told the truth? Now THAT would be news. (Is Mexico paying for that wall yet?) Yeah, and where is affordable health care? The lack of it is messing with my 'financial independence' date. Our government seems to have overlooked the fact that helping the poor ALSO tends to help the not super wealthy people as well. Assholes.

next it will be marijuana,
Drug control vs gun control
Ya gotta get into the brain behind the trigger finger.
Yeah, and where is affordable health care?
That went out the door with Obama's ACA that wasn't. He forgot the minor detail of putting a cap on the insurance companies.

That young man had mental health issues. Instead of addressing it, his mother taught him how to shoot. Sadly, the outcome isn't surprising, it's just too bad he took out his problems on a school full of young children.

If comprehensive background checks stop ONE individual from acquiring an AK 47 and killing 20 innocents, and someone is against that, they are philosophically an accessory to mass murder.

Please do not try to say that 329,000,000 Americans own guns. Best guess is about 30%, or 99,000,000. Because the public as a whole overwhelmingly favors stricter gun laws, it is a safe bet that most of the other 230,000,000, as well as many of the 99,000,000 prefer stricter gun laws. It is not an infringement of any "right" that the NRA claims to exist. Reasonable gun laws are necessary, along with much stronger penalties for gun crime of any kind.

The young man's father knew his son was mentally unbalanced and didn't want him to have access to guns, but the mom was a gun nut and insisted she had the right to have as many and whatever kinds of guns she wanted. Since the kid was an adult, nothing the cops could do.
The El Paso shooter's mom was also concerned and called the cops about her son buying so many weapons - the cops told her they couldn't do anything either, because her son was an adult.
It's a shame there isn't some kind of law that allows siblings/parents/children/grannies of crazy people to contact the cops and get the crazy person's guns taken away, and have that person put on a 'no sell' black list, isn't it?
So many relatives must realize they have someone living in their household who's about to go off and shoot a bunch of people, yet they're adults, they are allowed to buy whatever guns they want, and they no one can do a thing about it. Yet.

There are an estimated 350 million guns in the U.S.
much stronger penalties for gun crime of any kind.
Stronger penalties for like murder? So are we going to fry them in the electric chair three time instead of once? Maybe hang them , shoot them, then electriFRY them.

Wondering about one's mental stability, maybe relatives should contract the police about people that post on political message boards!!

And I have to laugh when he comes out with one of his tweets or lies, like his middle class tax cuts, party of health care, or background checks.....The Republicans wish he would just stick to the script: crazy socialist liberals!!! Don't talk policy or ideas....stick to the script!
