We can't afford Greenland. It doesn't matter that Denmark doesn't want to sell it to us.

Trump probably made a passing comment about buying Greenland,in some joke, youidiots took it and ran with it like he had signed an executive order doing it. Or maybe you could come up with an Executive order. youidiots, is a new word. "youidiots " ...is that the way to express yourself in our forum..? tsk, tsk...for shame.... Actually I thought it was just a joke of his but it seems his words and actions since show he was perfectly seriouse plus in his own words making himself and our country again becoming the laughing stock of the world...it's becoming tired..happening too often...Time for u to stop finding excuses for this man...

“At any other moment in modern history, the POTUS [president of the United States] cancelling a state visit to a major ally because they won’t sell him part of their country would be the most extraordinary moment of the presidency. With this guy it’s not even the most batshit thing he does in a single morning.”

I have to admit Happyhoix, I am jealous about the "Spin" you can throw on these thing, Me compared to you, I am a rank amateur, Maybe you struggle to 'spin' Trump's behavior and language because what he's doing is indefensible?
Kind of like when your dog bites the neighbor's kid. Hard to explain that the dog mistook the kid for a wolf, or thought the kid smelled like bacon, or in his inner heart, the dog was truly a good canine but people misunderstood why he sometimes bites people. He's lovingly biting people! With affection!
It's a whole lot easier to just state the obvious - it's a mean dog who can't be out in public without a muzzle.
Geeees if we put a muzzle on Trump,, then you would have nothing to complain about.

If you need proof how we have lost respect in the rest of the world look no further. And just because other countries have not been this blatant don't think for one second they respect the current administration any more.

... If you are an American,, you have already won the lottery. ... Good analogy. In fact, about 70 percent of people who win a lottery or get a big windfall actually end up broke in a few years, according to the National Endowment for Financial Education. link Some of us are working to protect what we have won so we don't end up broke.

happiness and money are highly correlated to about $80k/year. after that, money and happiness are uncorrelated.
this points to a certain solution for nation states that the US blithely ignores.

Re buying Greenland: Putting the cost & politics aside, owning Greenland might be a very good idea in 50 or 100 years. Our US agriculture grows about 4X more crops/livestock than we did 100 years ago. Hybrid livestock, hybrid field crops, modern methods, commercial fertilizer, GMO, etc. And GMO crops withstand drought, wind - crop failures are almost unheard in recent decades, 100 years ago it was common. Plus we can grow short-season crops where nothing grew 100 years ago. MN, MT, BC, Sas, AB, are now a part of the growing region - a band of land about 50 miles wide along the international US/CAN border has added millions of acres of new cropland. The world population of 7B doubles about every 50 years - ie about 14B in 50 years, 28B in 100 years. Our ability to feed our 7B is currently stretching our capabilities - we will be needing way more food in 100 years. When climate change in Greenland melts the ice and the country becomes a giant green prairie over fertile loam and topsoil with Combines humming thru the miles and miles of corn and soybean fields - plus millions of grazing Black Angus cattle, millions of feeder hogs, maybe a few million free-range laying hens, then the owners of Greenland may be a major factor in feeding the World. Greenland has about 535,251,200 acres - maybe the US, CAN, and the Danes could form a ag partnership to farm it. And watch the "feasible crop-line' slowly shift from the 45th parallel to the 60th, and then move northerly across Greenland. Agricultural engineering and climate change, teaming up to grow arctic-corn. Of course it will take a few centuries to do it - OTOH, it will take a few centuries to NOT do it.

there is actually adequate food for the world. what we have mostly is a distribution problem. if we could solve it, we could end hunger tomorrow.

'Poverty' is also a key factor. In many places the food supplies are available but the people are too poor to buy it. And as you say, 'distribution' is an issue. Eg, there may be a shipload of grain waiting on the coast - but only a few are close enough to push a wheelbarrow to the ship and haul some grain home. The millions of people that live inland are screwed.

Not just distribution, but look at all the food waste! In the United States, food waste is estimated at between 30-40 percent of the food supply. This estimate, based on estimates from USDA’s Economic Research Service of 31 percent food loss at the retail and consumer levels, corresponded to approximately 133 billion pounds and $161 billion worth of food in 2010. This amount of waste has far-reaching impacts on food security, resource conservation and climate change: www.usda.gov/oce/foodwaste/faqs.htmwww.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/07/american-food-waste/491513/

Excellent point! DW and I throw away way too much - some tags say 'best if sold by'. IMO that is kinda misleading - I would rather know when it is "bad", not "best"... Milk is easy, it smells bad - but eggs, yogurt, etc - harder to know. It seems to me like we buy a dozen eggs, put them in the fridge, throw them away in 3 weeks - and repeat.

but yes, if you view them as separate problems, I agree. waste is an issue, too.

OC, why the fuck do you think I'm unhappy because I'm poor?
First of all, I'm not unhappy. Hence my screen name. My life is actually really good, in every sense, including financially. DH and I have zero debt, and are shoveling close to 50% of our income into various savings/retirement accounts, which are over the 1M mark. So keep your silly advice on being happy while broke to yourself, it's insulting.
Here's the difference between you and me - read carefully now, because I'm trying to help you see why I get disgusted on this board. I believe everything I have is due to the country I was born into, the parents I was born to, the teachers that taught me along the way, my family members who encouraged or challenged me along the way, and the opportunities that opened up because I worked hard - but also, because I was lucky to be the right person at the right time in the right place so when that door opened, I was there to walk through it.
I realize how blessed I am to have what I have, how little I deserve it, and how many other people did not have all the opportunities I had.
So I have empathy for those I feel got left behind, knowing I could very easily have been one of them.
Now compare that to yourself, and how you bragged about how you made it good for yourself, and no one gave you anything. You are 100% wrong. Your parents supported you. The schools you went to educated you. The country you were born into gave you the opportunity to be a businesses owner, the infrastructure to support your business, and to support the businesses of the people who buy your product. Sure you worked hard, but you didn't work in a vacuum.
You have zero empathy for anyone else, because you believe everyone else just didn't try hard enough. I can assure you, where are plenty of people who worked harder than you, who tried harder than you, but who weren't born into a family like yours, in a community like yours, in a country like our country that encourages it's citizens to be successful and provides the infrastructure and stability to support private business. Instead of smugly handing out old chestnuts about how to be rich, how about you have a little humility about how lucky you are to be where you are?

Consider your statement that I put in bold...what if a person is unhappy because he can't afford to feed himself or his children. Pretty sure if he subsequently had money, he would be a whole lot happier.

Consider your statement that I put in bold...what if a person is unhappy because he can't afford to feed himself or his children. Pretty sure if he subsequently had money, he would be a whole lot happier.
once more. Also, and this is a little nasty "secret" people don't like acknowledge: it is not just all the support you received and the hard work you put into something that gets you where you are → any talent you/we have to put to work for you/us is something that was given to you/us for free. You/we were born with it. That does not mean that hard work is not required, but (for instance) I could have trained 24/7 for all of my life, with coaches, training camps etc. and I would never have been able to play basketball as well as Steph Curry.
And this is true for all of us. Yes, most of us need to work hard to get ahead (we don't all get a couple of million in seed money starting out) but you can only work with what you have and there are plenty of people who did not get lucky in that respect.

Happyhoix, life is good for me because I made it good for me, no one else came along gave me free stuff. Seriously you are so unhappy, You need to find what is making you so unhappy, it is not everything around you. You already know what is making feel this way,, you may not want to admit it. being poor is not the worse thing that can happen to you. Years ago I bought a Dummies book on finance,,
in the very back of the book the author wrote before you run out, work at being rich, One of his happiest customer's only made $16,000 a year. If you are unhappy before you get money, you will still be unhappy after you get money, figure out what exactly is wrong, fix it.
I believe everything I have is due to the country I was born into,
Why do you complain all the time about how bad it is? which are over the 1M mark
Why do you complain all the time about how bad it is? the opportunities that opened up because I worked hard
Why do you complain all the time about how bad it is? right person at the right time in the right place so when that door opened, I was there to walk through it.
Why do you complain all the time about how bad it is?
I realize how blessed I am to have what I have, how little I deserve it,

OK, I'm really rich,,
The Government gave me everything No strings attached!! I am actually a Nigerian Prince,, People send me huge amounts of money all the time. It is greed, something for nothing,, I give back nothing!

that reply doesn't actually address the subject of the post. the point is not whether it is good or bad for happyhoix or you. the point is whether all people have equal opportunity, or whether some have the deck stacked for or against them. I would posit that you and I had advantages that MT and happy did not have. they have done well in spite of everything they had stacked against them. and that is indeed cause to praise them. but it is not cause to condemn others similarly disadvantaged, or worse. my problem with the GOP these days is they see all victims of the economy as unworthy scoffaws. #whitemaleprivelage

You mean why do I complain about how some people don't have clean water, good quality food, a safe place to live, a quality education and basic medical treatment? Why complain about that when I've got great water, plenty of money for food (TOO much money for food), a very nice home in a nice neighborhood, and a great healthcare plan?
I can't explain that to you, OC. If you can't figure it out for yourself, I can't help you.

another form of the argument you are making is this:
"anyone can win the Lottery".
is that really true, tho? there are only X number of opportunities present in the universe. each of those opportunities will fall to ONE individual. if you are not ever exposed to those opportunities, you won't have ANY chance of having them. it is even WORSE if you are systematically excluded from having them.
I think the mistake that conservatives make is confusing one of those with the other, and failing to recognize both.
imagine what your life would have been like if both your parents died before you were 18, and you became a ward of the state. now, it is POSSIBLE that you would have ended up precisely where you are now. and it is POSSIBLE that you would have done better. but it is certainly far more PROBABLE that you would have lost your advantage, and lost your way.
my dad used to say "there but for the grace of God, go I". you familiar with that phrase?
